CROSSING THE BRIDGE

Since its launch in 2014, the “Aspire Academy Global Summit” has established itself as the world’s leading gathering of experts in youth player development. The Summit is the flagship of the “Aspire in the World Fellows” program, which over the last three years has brought together 50 of the world’s leading clubs, federations and leagues.

During the three previous editions of the Summit in Paris 2014, Berlin 2015 and 2016, representatives of the “Aspire in the World Fellows” gathered to discuss and share their view on modern youth training methodology. Thereby, the “Aspire Academy Global Summit” uses a dynamic approach of communication and encourages the Aspire Fellows to engage during a series of roundtable discussions and workshops.

In addition, the Summit includes “Stars Chat”, sessions involving leading managers, coaches and players. Speaker to date include , , , , Hernandez, Edwin der Sar, , , Juan Sebastian Veron, Stefan Effenberg, Lothar Matthäus, , , Gabriel Heinze and .

Since the first edition of the Summit in 2014, the Aspire Fellows community has continued to work together, sharing information and experiences and engaging in debate and discussion through The Aspire Fellows web platform. The website is the world only platform hosting detailed information on the training methodology of the world’s elite clubs and federations. The platform also offers exclusive interviews with world leading coaches such as , Antonio Conte, , and Roberto Martinez alongside presentations from leading performance practitioners.

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER

Aspire Academy is bringing together football experts from around the world for the fourth consecutive year, for the “Aspire Academy Global Summit” to discuss issues around ‘Football Performance and Science.’

During the two-day event held in London, some of the most influential figures in world football alongside leading members of the scientific and performance community will discuss contemporary in training methodology. Participants from international football clubs and federations will also present details of their approaches to identifying, selecting and developing talented young players.

Last year’s edition in Amsterdam brought together 150 football and performance experts to address recent developments in the sport and explore the importance of continual improvements and optimization of performance in attaining sporting excellence. In addition, the 2016 Global Summit also launched a new concept – the ‘Master Class’, sessions taught by renowned global speakers.

It has always been a major of Aspire Academy to not only create a community like this, but to further develop football in general. In order to achieve this goal, a new concept was introduced in 2016 called “The Fellows’ Extended Community”. This approach gave each member of the “Aspire Fellows” the opportunity to issue “wild cards” to affiliate clubs to enable them to attend the summit in Amsterdam. This afforded them the chance to attend presentations and lectures as well access to selected areas of the Fellows’ online platform.

Since the future focus of the program will be geared towards best practice and research informed practice, the 2017 Global Summit in London is going to have a new feature. After establishing a research committee in the past year, the Fellows were encouraged to submit research projects, the best of which would be chosen by the committee to be presented in London. It is hoped this initiative will encourage clubs to think about potential collaborative research projects in areas that will be of mutual benefit to their respective organizations.

13 ® TOPICS DESCRIPTION

TOPIC 1: “TALENT IDENTIFICATION – NATURE VS. NURTURE”

As the price of footballers in the transfer market rapidly rises each season, the capacity to identify, select and develop talented young footballers is important for all the football clubs and academies around the world. Talent identification is a complex process as it requires the consideration and assessment of attributes and qualities in a number of areas including physical, technical, biological and ® psychological. This topic discusses various frameworks and processes used by the Aspire Fellows Community to identify talented young footballers.

TOPIC 2: “STRENGTH METHODOLOGY – WHY, WHEN, AND HOW”

There are many questions when it comes to strength training for youth footballers. At what age should certain aspects be trained? What type of strength training methods should be employed? What are the underlying goals and principles of the methodologies used? With many training methods available, each club can vary significantly in how they develop strength in their youth. This topic discusses the strength training methodologies used by football clubs and why they have chosen their specific approaches.

TOPIC 3: “FROM YOUTH TO SENIOR – HOW TO MANAGE THE LEAP”

The development pathway of youth players from academy teams into the 1st team is a contentious topic. The transition can involve substantial changes in training and match workload, and their immediate environment due to the greater pressure to win at the senior level. This topic discusses the strategies and pathways used by the Aspire Fellows community to assist players in this transition from youth to senior level.
