Appendix 11.5.1: Aquatic Vascular Plant Species Distribution Maps These distribution maps are for 116 aquatic vascular macrophyte species (Table 1). Aquatic designation follows habitat descriptions in Haines and Vining (1998), and includes submergent, floating and some emergent species. See Appendix 11.4 for list of species. Also included in Appendix 11.4 is the number of HUC-10 watersheds from which each taxon has been recorded, and the county-level distributions. Data are from nine sources, as compiled in the MABP database (plus a few additional records derived from ancilliary information contained in reports from two fisheries surveys in the Upper St. John basin organized by The Nature Conservancy). With the exception of the University of Maine herbarium records, most locations represent point samples (coordinates were provided in data sources or derived by MABP from site descriptions in data sources). The herbarium data are identified only to township. In the species distribution maps, town-level records are indicated by center-points (centroids). Figure 1 on this page shows as polygons the towns where taxon records are identified only at the town level. Have You Seen These Rare Water-Lilies?
1 HAVE YOU SEEN THESE RARE WATER-LILIES? Cathy Foster and Cary Hamel Southeastern Manitoba, including Whiteshell Provincial Park, supports many plant species that are rarely seen elsewhere in Manitoba. As an example, two of the area’s water-lily species are considered provincially rare. Your assistance is requested to collect information on these species in order to better understand their range and abundance in Manitoba. A total of three species of white water-lilies have been recorded in the Whiteshell. The Dwarf water-lily (Nymphaea leibergii) is thought to be the most common. However, in the past it has been confused with the rare Pygmy water-lily (Nymphaea tetragona). A third species, the Fragrant water-lily (Nymphaea odorata), is also rare and is distinguishable by its larger flowers with more numerous petals. The smaller yellow water-lilies of the genus Nuphar are not considered rare. All three white water-lily species have large, circular leaves that are split between the stem and leaf edge. The leaves float on the surface of calm water and are green above and often purplish below. Flowers are usually white although those of the fragrant water-lily are sometimes pink. The Dwarf and Pygmy water-lilies are very similar. The leaves have 7-13 main veins and range in size from 2 x 3 cm to 15 x 19 cm (¾ x 1 ¼ inches to 6 x 7 ½ inches). Pygmy leaves tend to be slightly smaller and thinner with raised veins while Dwarf leaves tend to be thicker with impressed veins (observed from below). In addition, Pygmy leaves are sometimes mottled with reddish brown or purple above, especially when young. -

OPEN Citation: Horticulture Research (2017) 4, 17051; doi:10.1038/hortres.2017.51 www.nature.com/hortres REVIEW ARTICLE Water lilies as emerging models for Darwin’s abominable mystery Fei Chen1, Xing Liu1, Cuiwei Yu2, Yuchu Chen2, Haibao Tang1 and Liangsheng Zhang1 Water lilies are not only highly favored aquatic ornamental plants with cultural and economic importance but they also occupy a critical evolutionary space that is crucial for understanding the origin and early evolutionary trajectory of flowering plants. The birth and rapid radiation of flowering plants has interested many scientists and was considered ‘an abominable mystery’ by Charles Darwin. In searching for the angiosperm evolutionary origin and its underlying mechanisms, the genome of Amborella has shed some light on the molecular features of one of the basal angiosperm lineages; however, little is known regarding the genetics and genomics of another basal angiosperm lineage, namely, the water lily. In this study, we reviewed current molecular research and note that water lily research has entered the genomic era. We propose that the genome of the water lily is critical for studying the contentious relationship of basal angiosperms and Darwin’s ‘abominable mystery’. Four pantropical water lilies, especially the recently sequenced Nymphaea colorata, have characteristics such as small size, rapid growth rate and numerous seeds and can act as the best model for understanding the origin of angiosperms. The water lily genome is also valuable for revealing the genetics of ornamental traits and will largely accelerate the molecular breeding of water lilies. Vol. 13, No. 2 Summer 2008 New waterlily species surfaces By CHET NEUFELD NPSS executive director It is not often that a new plant species is discovered anywhere in the world, and the chances are even slimmer in North America where most of the native plant life has been documented and described in detail. So, you can imagine my surprise when Dr. Rob Wright of the Saskatchewan Parks Service forwarded an e-mail to me proclaiming that a new plant species had been found right here in Saskatchewan! At first I thought that it must be some tiny, obscure species, but upon reading further I discovered that it was a large, showy hybrid waterlily. Although recently confirmed as a new species, the story of this previously undescribed water lily goes back more than a decade for Dr. John Wiersema, the American botanist who confirmed the new hybrid species of water lily. He wrote a detailed scientific account of the discov- PHOTO BY BARRE HELLQUIST ery that I’ve condensed here for the Native Plant News. The flower of Saskatchewan’s newly discovered waterlily species. In the early 1990’s, he was charged with compiling the Nymphaea, or waterlily genus for the Flora of North America. Dr. Wiersema writes, “Lacking familiarity with this genus over much of northern North America, save in my home state of Michigan, I pursued additional fieldwork and solicited numerous herbarium collections for study, including those of all national and provincial Canadian herbaria.” He says that “the herbarium study revealed two boreal elements that had not previously been distinguished by any American Flora. -

Executive Summary Current information about rare species distribution, population abundance, and threats is essential to guiding science-based decisions related to species conservation status, protection, and recovery. Through the use of field surveys and partnerships with conservation organizations and volunteers, the current knowledge of over 30 rare and uncommon species, as well as one rare plant community, was expanded in 2004. Field surveys for rare species and communities were conducted between May 19 and October 27, 2004. Activities included monitoring known occurrences and surveying for new records. Occurrence information was also collected from volunteers responding to requests for rare species reports, and through communication with other conservation groups and individuals. Survey results for each species and community, as well as recommendations regarding future research needs and management are presented. Other rare and uncommon species that were encountered incidentally are also reported. -

Nymphaea tetragona Georgi pygmy water-lily Nymphaeaceae - water lily family status: State Possibly Extirpated, USFS strategic rank: G5 / SH General Description: Perennial aquatic herb with leaves arising from unbranched, erect rhizomes. Leaf blades floating, elliptic-oval with bases deeply lobed, hairless, green and sometimes mottled red brown to purple above (especially on young leaves), green to dull purple beneath, 3-13 (14) x 2-11 (13) cm, with 7-13 palmate veins; petioles slender. Floral Characteristics: Flowers floating, 3-7.5 cm diameter, white to pinkish with yellow centers, not fragrant. Sepals 4, uniformly green, 2-3 cm long, forming a distinct, protuding tetragon where they attach to the base of the flower. Petals 8-17. Stamens 30-70, yellowish orange and usually with some purple, filaments widest above middle. Margin of stigmatic disk with prominent, upward-curved, boat-shaped appendages, each (2) 3-4 x 2-4 mm. Blooms June to A ugust. Fruits: Berrylike, leathery, many-seeded capsules borne on curved or coiled peduncles. C apsules rupture to release a gelatinous seed mass. Seeds ovoid, about 2-3 x 1.5-2 mm, lacking papillae. Identif ication Tips: Nymphaea leibergii is similar but has a circular or only slightly angled receptacle at the insertion of the sepals. In c ontras t, N. tetragona has a prominent 4-angled receptacle defined by the swollen, straight lines of insertion of the sepals; this is best viewed from the underside of the flower. Nymphaea odorata is recognized by its rounder, much larger leaves (up to 25 cm broad), more petals (17-43), and much larger, fragrant flowers. -

MICHIGAN'S SPECIAL PLANTS Endangered, Threatened, Special Concern, and Probably Extirpated This list presents the Endangered (E), Threatened (T), and Probably Extirpated (X) plant species of Michigan, which are protected under the Endangered Species Act of the State of Michigan (Part 365 of PA 451, 1994 Michigan Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act). The current list became effective on April 9, 2009, after extensive review by technical advisors to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the citizenry ofthe state. Also included in this list are plant species of Special Concern. While not afforded legal protection under the Act, many of these species are of concern because of declining or relict populations in the state. Should these species continue to decline, they would be recommended for Threatened or Endangered status. Protection of Special Concern species now, before they reach dangerously low population levels, would prevent the need to list them in the future by maintaining adequate numbers of self-sustaining populations within Michigan. Some other potentially rare species are listed as of Special Concern pending more precise information on their status in the state; when such information becomes available,they could be moved to threatened or endangered status or deleted from the list. This list was produced by the Endangered Species Program of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Natural Features Inventory. English names in common usage or from published sources have been incorporated, when possible, to promote public understanding of and participation in the Endangered Species Program. Rare and Uncommon Native Vascular Plants of Vermont Vermont Natural Heritage Inventory Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department 09 August 2018 The Vermont Rare and Uncommon Native Vascular Plants List is produced by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department's Natural Heritage Inventory with assistance from the Scientific Advisory Group on Flora of the VT Endangered Species Committee. The Vermont Natural Heritage Inventory is the state’s official repository for records of rare, threatened, and endangered species. Information in the Natural Heritage Database is the result of work of botanists, natural resource professionals and interested amateurs. This list is intended to inform naturalists, biologists, planners, developers and the general public about our rare native flora. It contains a listing of the rare and uncommon, native, vascular plants of Vermont. These species may be rare because they have very particular habitat requirements, are subject to habitat loss, are at the edge of their range, are vulnerable to disturbance or collection, or have difficulty reproducing for unknown reasons. Some taxa on this list are rare varieties of otherwise common or exotic species, and are noted as such. Unless noted, varieties/subspecies on this list can be assumed to be the only varieties/subspecies of the species in Vermont. Species with a state status of Threatened or Endangered (T or E) are protected by Vermont’s Endangered Species Law (10 V.S.A. Chap. 123). Those with a federal status of Threatened or Endangered (LT or LE) are protected by the Federal Endangered Species Act (P.L. 93-205). The state and global ranks are informational categories regarding the rarity and extirpation/extinction risk of the species.
