7 THE SIDE Winning EntrySocial - Interpreting James Joyce

he BFEI Design Department was thrilled to have been awarded funding under the NAPD (National Association of Principals & Deputy Principals) Creative T Engagement Initiative. This is an Arts in Education Programme which strives to encourage creativity, initiative and individual expression. The successful BFEI entry explored James Joyce, the man, his writing and his Dublin connections. BFEI’s location and proximity to the James Joyce Tower gave a real resonance to the project. As part of the project, students visited the Joyce Museum in North Great George’s Street and the Sandycove Martello Tower where the first chapter of Ulysses is set. Having examined his works, and immersed themselves in his life and struggles, students explored Joyce visually using a range of different materials. Students developed the design process by sketching and exploring ideas in a rough sketchbook before deciding on a design direction. Each student produced a collection of work including a portrait of Joyce, a small sculptural artwork in clay and an A4 photograph. It was an enriching experience; the students pushed their creative boundaries, developed their analytical skills and used Art to develop new relationships with their peers. The work was displayed at the 7th Annual Exhibition of Creative Engagement in November 2019.

My decision to return to college as a mature student was somewhat daunting at the start. I picked BFEI as they offered the Accounting Technician Course full-time which suited my needs. The location of the college played a pivotal role in choosing BFEI as it is very accessible by DART and also numerous bus routes. Blackrock Village is a lively area with lots of “choices for coffee shops and places to eat for students. As soon as the course started, I knew I had made the right decision as I was put at ease after meeting the Tutors who were extremely professional, friendly and excellent at their work. The class sizes were small which meant all the Tutors got to know the students on a personal level by name. From day one, the Tutors were supportive and exam focused to optimise the results that each student could achieve in the exams. I cannot thank them enough as I am now in full-time employment after having passed all my exams. The course has definitely updated my skills and contributed greatly to gaining employment as it is a highly sought-after qualification in the financial sector. Throughout my experience as a mature student in BFEI, I felt excited and very rewarded. This was due to both the Tutors’ constant encouragement and the new friendships I made during my 2 years as a student there. It is a fantastic way of increasing your self-belief for future careers and along the way meeting a mix of other students who can help with their support. The Pre-University Arts & Social Science course at BFEI has been hugely beneficial to me. After a turbulent Leaving Cert year, I was extremely nervous and anxious about commencing college. I decided to defer my CAO place “and apply to BFEI. The BFEI course was extremely eye-catching due to the wide range of subjects taught. Subjects such as Political Studies and Social Studies, helped me to recognise and think about society in a completely different way, while other subjects such as Research and Study Skills allowed me to adjust to the way of learning that is expected at 3rd level. I found that this course allowed me to mentally prepare for 3rd level education instead of being thrown into the deep end. Having completed the course, I felt prepared and excited about going to college. I’m now in first year of a BA in English and Geography at UCD and feel that the year in BFEI has given me an excellent foundation as I am used to independent study, referencing, and reading a broad range of material. I was looking to go to DCU to do the Marketing Innovation & Technology (MINT) Degree and I decided that before I invested four years in a course, I would try it out for a year in BFEI to see if I liked it. As it turns “out…I do. The BFEI course itself is very practical with eight modules covering a range of areas. The class sizes are small, which was really nice for me because I could ask loads of questions and I would definitely recommend the course. Since completing the course, I’ve been offered a place on the MINT course in DCU and feel that I have a fantastic foundation in Marketing from BFEI. After moving from Kilkenny to Dublin in 2016, I decided to pursue my love of interiors by applying for the Interior Architecture and Design Course in BFEI. My two years at BFEI have been nothing short of wonderful, from many class outings and trips, I learned so much. Making friends from many different backgrounds and learning so much in each “module, putting my skills and knowledge to the test every day. I highly recommend this course for all who have a love for interiors. The teaching from the Lecturers is of a high standard and they were attentive to each student’s progress. I gained advanced entry to 3rd year of a 4 year BA Hons in Interior Design at Griffith College and I now have a job lined up for me after completing work experience in a large Architectural firm in Dublin. The BFEI course, like any third level course, was challenging at times but was all worth it in the end! Courtney Forbes, Interior Design Graduate, 2019 ” 21 Landscape Architecture QQI Level 5 5M2208

I finished school in Coláiste Choilm Swords in 2019 and decided to do the Product Design course at BFEI. On the course, you begin to learn a lot about a product, like how it’s made, what is its function and other reasons as to why it is made. This course also opens your creative mind as I feel the more products you make, the more you begin to come up “with different ideas than you normally would have at the start. You’ll also find that you will take what you are learning with you everywhere, as you look at products and objects outside the college differently and try to improve them. You will also make loads of friends on the course as everyone is very friendly and the lectures also encourage you to stay creative which is a benefit as you start to come up with more ideas, instead of coming up with one and then just sticking to that. I would highly recommend this course for anyone as it is a very interesting and fun course to do. Jamie McGuirk, studying Product Design, 2019/2020

At Secondary School, I was very interested in Art and I loved the idea of Graphic Design. I wanted to do a PLC course to make sure it was the right area for me. I really enjoyed my time in BFEI although it was stressful at times, our Tutors were very supportive and understanding. I gained a great knowledge of the Adobe Software and a great “appreciation for creating artwork as well which has been extremely helpful in my further studies. The work experience element helped me see how this field operates on a practical level which was incredibly beneficial. I am now studying for a Level 7 in Graphic Design. I always had a very keen interest in the Arts over my working life and when the Arts Administration course in BFEI came to my attention, I jumped at the opportunity. I had worked in business for most of my career and decided “to look for something different which would tie in with my aspirations to follow a different career path. I found the course was just what I needed to update my own skill set and give me an opportunity to compete for management roles within the expanding Arts sector both here and abroad. Having come from a business background, I really enjoyed the mix of business with the arts and also that the course was full-time for one year only.

When I graduated from BFEI in 2016, the opportunity presented itself for me to continue my studies for an honours degree in Arts Management at IADT. I was accepted into second year and now find myself going down a road of higher education that was not in my original plans. It is important to follow your instincts and find something you enjoy when you set about putting your goals in place. You also need the support and back up of a strong institution who will help you to get to where you want to be. There is no doubt the path I have chosen to further my own education and career would not have been possible without the wonderful support of BFEI. Having worked in education and the creative “industries for a number of years, I wanted to expand my knowledge and explore a new subject. The SNA course at BFEI enabled me to do so in a friendly environment in a great location. The lectures were informative, engaging and catered for a diverse group of students. There was a wide range of subjects on the curriculum; some upgraded my existing knowledge and skills whilst others offered a new learning space to grow and explore. Having completed the course, I have worked part-time as an SNA and enjoy working in this area. Throughout my year at BFEI, I felt supported and well looked after by the lecturers and all staff members. It was a joy to enter the building each morning looking forward to the day ahead. I came back to education last year and it turned out to be the best decision I could have made. The SNA course was brilliant, I can’t state that enough. The staff in BFEI have been amazing so much so that “I came back to do another course this year. I would encourage anyone to follow what they want to do no matter what age they are. We had to do work experience as part of the course and this was brilliant because one of the schools I did my work experience in, now have me working for them on a substitute basis. This is an amazing way to be able to put all the information into practice. This has also given me more confidence because I am actually doing what I was taught while doing the course. It is with great satisfaction that I can say that I graduated with Distinction from the Retail Pharmacy Assistant Course at BFEI in 2018. From the word go, I found all staff members and teachers to be pleasant, professional and approachable at all times. The modules covered were all relevant, informative and interesting to study. This was coupled “with teachers whose passion for what they teach was a most engaging experience. In particular, I found the Over the Counter (OTC) Medicine Module to be invaluable in opening up my career opportunities. Having a Pharmacist delivering the course was very appropriate and professional and I thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience. Other modules of particular relevance and interest to me were Nutrition and Anatomy & Physiology, again very engaging and informative. The course was challenging and, the work load was heavy at times but manageable and it helped to have continual assessment throughout the year in the majority of modules. Doing the RPA course and graduating with Distinction has been a major stepping stone towards further study as a Pharmacy Technician. I am now working as on OTC Assistant in Allcare Pharmacy with a view to studying for the Pharmacy Technician Award through the Irish Pharmacy Union. I would highly recommend not only the RPA course but also BFEI as a centre of excellence for learning. Having dropped out of a previous course, my only regret was not doing the Web Design & Digital Media course sooner. The supportive atmosphere at BFEI immediately dissolved any worries I had about starting anew. I can honestly say studying at BFEI has allowed me to realise a passion and find a career path I want to build upon. The one-to-one attention from “Lecturers is fantastic. New concepts and tools like the Adobe software suite can have a steep learning curve, but you’ll never be afraid to ask questions, thanks to the patience of the teaching staff and the smaller class sizes. This course also provides a chance to develop social skills and confidence. The course gave me a foundation for learning how to present my design work confidently, the importance of which I now appreciate more at 3rd level as I am studying for a degree in Creative Computing at IADT. The skills I gained at BFEI continue to benefit me greatly. Others on the degree course, who have no experience with Adobe, or with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are at a disadvantage compared to myself and my BFEI classmates. We have hit the ground running and this has given us great confidence. Some of my BFEI classmates who decided not to do a degree were offered internships at design agencies or are working freelance and are doing really well. I couldn’t recommend the BFEI course more, whether you’re venturing for the first or hundredth time into further education, time spent here can only open doors for you.
