4 Don’t Mind The GAP!

Having decided that I would like to return to work after many years as a homemaker, I knew that I would first have to update my skills. It was a daunting prospect returning to study as a mature student but it was an absolutely necessary step to take. I chose BFEI because of its location, the course content and the availability of classes in the mornings. It was a pleasure to learn in a modern, comfortable environment with up-to-date equipment and facilities. The course was challenging at times but support from other students and teachers was always there. The whole experience was extremely positive. I achieved the goal of updating skills, regained confidence and made some great new friends. The sense of achievement after some difficult stages, has made it all worthwhile. I am more than happy What if you don’t get the points needed to recommend BFEI as the next step forward Q: for your degree of choice? in your career/personal development.

I had been thinking about returning to study as my children were getting older, and less dependent on me. One of the courses I had been interested in was the Accounting Technician Course, and I decided to attend an Open Day at BFEI. The teachers were extremely helpful and encouraging, and dispelled any doubts I had about returning to education. The course “is very demanding and from day one, we were given great guidance about keeping on top of everything, and using our time wisely. I really enjoyed the course and found the teachers extremely helpful, experienced and encouraging. All subjects are examined in great detail, and the examinations are set externally by ATI. All my teachers had in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the curriculum. The course has given me the confidence to return to the workplace, and I am also thinking of further study. The facilities in BFEI are excellent, and the location is easily accessible, which were the factors I considered when choosing to study there. The college was welcoming to mature students and school leavers alike. I really enjoyed my time there from both an educational perspective and the good friends that I have made. I would highly recommend BFEI. Amanda Walsh, Accounting Technician Graduate, 2018 ” 12 Accounting Technician Apprenticeship ATI Certification & QQI Level 6

I decided I wanted to get into the property industry, so I registered on the BFEI Auctioneering Course. This course helped me learn the basic principles of the property industry in order to get a job. As part of the course, “we had to secure work experience. I subsequently got part-time job offers from the two companies where I did my work experience. This allowed me to get my foot in the door and start working. Once I finished the course, I got offered a full-time role with one of those companies, and this helped me progress my studies to get the licence required to become a property service provider. I was offered places in two degree courses based on my results in BFEI and my work experience. I accepted a place in the part-time BSc in Property Economics in DIT which is run by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI). The SCSI course allows you to exit after year two with the Level 6 Certificate needed to get a licence. I continued my studies, and am currently in 4th year. I have started the Assessment of Professional Competence program and once I finish it, I can move abroad as my Charter Surveyor qualification is recognised worldwide. The BFEI course was my gateway into the property industry and allowed me to further my studies and most importantly my career. I would highly recommend this course, as it allows you get a foot in the door to become a property professional. Ryan Tyrrell, Auctioneering, Estate Agency & Valuation Graduate, 2015

The Pre-University Arts & Social Science course at BFEI has been hugely beneficial to me. After a turbulent Leaving Cert year, I was extremely nervous and anxious about commencing college. I decided to defer my CAO place “and apply to BFEI. The BFEI course was extremely eye-catching due to the wide range of subjects taught. Subjects such as Political Studies and Social Studies have helped me to recognise and think about society in a completely different way while other subjects such as Research and Study Skills have allowed me to adjust to the way of learning that is expected at 3rd level. I have found that this course has allowed me to mentally prepare for 3rd level education instead of being thrown into the deep end. Now, I feel prepared and excited for College thanks to this course. Completing it will help me to progress into UCD to complete an Arts major in English and Geography. Conor Devlin, studying Pre-University Arts & Social Science, 2018/2019 ”

I took the opportunity to pursue a life-long interest in interior design and enrolled on the Interior Architecture & Design Course in 2017. Initially, I found it quite a struggle to re-activate my drawing skills, however, with perseverance “and continuous practice and excellent mentoring from the highly qualified and experienced teachers, I amazed myself by the standard of work that I produced at the end of the year from a very poor start. With small class sizes and a broad mix of students, a great team spirit quickly developed. Through a variety of class outings including visits to the Botanic Gardens, the National Gallery and a trip to Rome, I developed an in-depth appreciation of the application of good design in life and how it enhances functionality. I am now pursuing a career change to work in this industry and my Certificate in Interior Design from BFEI will be the door-opener for me to do so. I had thought carefully about returning to study graphic design as a mature student and felt that the course at BFEI would give me an introduction to the subject and allow me to develop my portfolio. I found the course at BFEI really stimulating, the classes were great and the class size meant that I got to know the tutors and the other “students really well. Throughout the year, I studied areas such as art appreciation, image processing, typography, communications and graphic design. I also completed a work experience placement in the Graphic Design Department at the National Museum of Ireland. The projects that I completed at BFEI formed the basis of my portfolio and I got accepted to study Visual Communications at DIT, Grangegorman. I would recommend the course at BFEI to anyone interested in studying graphic design, it was really enjoyable and was an essential step on my higher education journey. I always had a very keen interest in the Arts over my working life and when the Arts Administration course in BFEI came to my attention, I jumped at the opportunity. I had worked in business for most of my career and decided “to look for something different which would tie in with my aspirations to follow a different career path. I found the course was just what I needed to update my own skill set and give me an opportunity to compete for management roles within the expanding Arts sector both here and abroad. Having come from a business background, I really enjoyed the mix of business with the arts and also that the course was full-time for one year only.

When I graduated from BFEI in 2016, the opportunity presented itself for me to continue my studies for an honours degree in Arts Management at IADT. I was accepted into second year and now find myself going down a road of higher education that was not in my original plans. It is important to follow your instincts and find something you enjoy when you set about putting your goals in place. You also need the support and back up of a strong institution who will help you to get to where you want to be. There is no doubt the path I have chosen to further my own education and career would not have been possible without the wonderful support of BFEI. It is with great satisfaction that I can say that I graduated with Distinction from the Retail Pharmacy Assistant Course at BFEI. From the word go, I found all staff members and teachers to be pleasant, professional and approachable at all times. The modules covered were all relevant, informative and interesting to study. This was “coupled with teachers whose passion for what they teach was a most engaging experience. In particular, I found the Over the Counter Medicine Module to be invaluable in opening up my career opportunities. Having a Pharmacist delivering the course was very appropriate and professional and I thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience. Other modules of particular relevance and interest to me were Nutrition and Anatomy & Physiology, again very engaging and informative. The course was challenging and, the work load was heavy at times but manageable and it helped to have continual assessment throughout the year in the majority of modules. Doing the RPA course and graduating with Distinction has been a major stepping stone towards further study as a Pharmacy Technician. I would highly recommend not only the RPA course but also BFEI as a centre of excellence for learning.

As a mature student, returning back to education can be quite a daunting experience. My journey with BFEI started by taking a full-time course in Nutrition, Health & Wellbeing. Already, having a background in the fitness industry, this course provided me with a practical understanding and skills which have allowed me to develop my career within the “Wellness Industry with confidence. Personally, I found the whole experience challenging but extremely rewarding. The Teachers are knowledgeable, supportive and encouraging and fully committed to ensuring students get on the road to success. The facilities and location are excellent. The Sports Injuries and Soft Tissue Massage Therapy course gave me an excellent grounding for both future employment and further study. Since graduating from BFEI, I chose to further my studies to degree level. I am now enjoying a successful career as a massage and physical therapist. During my time at BFEI, I gained valuable experience by carrying out treatments in the open clinic at the college and on “work experience outings for various outdoor sporting events. I studied Holistic Therapies at BFEI for two years. The course offered a large variety of modules and I graduated with an extensive range of qualifications. As a result, I got a job very easily. My new employer quickly recognised “the exceptional practical skills, client care and attention to detail I had learned from my teachers at BFEI. Within six months of starting work, I was appointed as one of the managers at a growing chain of Spas in Dublin city. None of this would have been possible without the guidance and help from the wonderful staff at BFEI.

Going to BFEI was the best decision I ever made. I was given so many opportunities, both in college and within the working world. After leaving school almost 20 years ago, it felt slightly daunting to make the decision to return to education, especially given that I had 3 young children. However, I felt it was time to do something for myself. I was always interested in the Beauty Industry so decided to do a Nail Course. Through a few friends’ “recommendations, I decided to enrol for the Nail Technology Course at BFEI. It was a challenge to return as a mature student, but I knew from the first day I had made the right decision. The support and encouragement from my Tutors was second to none and it has been life changing for me. It has given me my confidence back, as well as so many qualifications to get me started in my new career. I have also made lifelong friends. I initially applied for this course for the creative writing aspect, but I was surprised to find myself enjoying the digital design

aspect just as much. The highlights of this course are: creative writing, in which you can share and critique your own, and others work; Adobe Illustrator/InDesign, Photography, and Script Writing. So far, I have designed a complete Brand Identity for myself! “The skills I am learning through the Digital Publishing subjects greatly complement the skills I learn from Creative Writing. The “ College itself has excellent facilities and an amazing atmosphere. I have made some great friends in my time here. The teachers, and all the staff, are friendly and approachable and excellent at what they do. All in all, this course, and this College, surpassed my expectations (my expectations were quite high to begin with, I’ll have you know!) and I would strongly urge anyone with an interest in Creative Writing and/or Digital Publishing to apply. It’ll be one of the best years you have! Jared Allen, studying Digital Publishing and Creative Writing, 2018/2019

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in BFEI. I feel the mix of subjects involved in the Games course was very beneficial and assisted me in gaining entry into the BA (Hons) Games Design course at DIT which I am thoroughly enjoying and now completing my final year. Without BFEI, I could not have pursued this dream career route. “BFEI was extremely supportive when myself and a colleague set up a games society. I always had an interest in both Digital Media and Web Development and was looking for a course that incorporated these two disciplines. When I researched the BFEI course in Web Design and Digital Media, I knew it would be the perfect choice for me. The course content was engaging and the support from the teachers “was incomparable. After completing this course, I was offered an internship with one of Ireland’s leading digital agencies. Completing this course, coupled with the experience gained during my internship, allowed me to build the foundation for the career I have today with one of the world’s largest tech corporations.
