Bratton 248 Wiltshire Council 5 Wiltshire Council: Wiltshire Housing Site Allocations Plan: Sustainability Appraisal Report Non-Technical Summary Purpose of this report This report is the Sustainability Appraisal (SA) Report Non-Technical Summary of the Wiltshire Housing Site Allocations Plan (the Plan). The purpose of the SA Report is to assess and inform the development of the Housing Site Allocations Plan. This report has been produced by Wiltshire Council. This non-technical summary sets out the SA process for the Plan and summarises the key assessment findings and recommendations. Wiltshire Council is preparing the Plan to support the delivery of new housing set out in the Wiltshire Core Strategy (adopted January 2015). The Plan identifies sufficient land (in the form of sites) across Wiltshire to ensure delivery of the Wiltshire Core Strategy housing requirement and help to maintain a five-year housing land supply up to the end of the plan period to 2026. It also reviews settlement boundaries across Wiltshire. The July 2018 SA Report was submitted to the Secretary of State alongside the draft Wiltshire Housing Site Allocations Plan and a final, consolidated Schedule of Proposed Changes. It [the SA] had been updated following pre-submission consultation on the draft Plan and associated SA Report that took place between 14 July 2017 and 22 September 2017. The submitted version of the SA Report contained a document called “Annex II”, which provided an assessment of the implications for the SA of the Council’s Schedule of Proposed Changes to the draft Plan. Following the submission of documents, it was identified that the assessment presented in the submitted version of Annex II was based on the Schedule of Proposed Changes as presented to Cabinet in May 2018, together with the implications of the resolution of the July Cabinet1. To clearly reflect the full extent of the Schedule of Proposed Changes approved by Cabinet and Council in July 2018 (and subsequently submitted to the Secretary of State), Annex II was revised. When read as a whole, the assessment presented in the revised Annex II, sets out the implications for the SA arising from the Council’s submitted Schedule of Proposed Changes (July 2018) to the draft Plan.

Amesbury The Amesbury Community Area and Area Board covers Amesbury town and surrounding parishes of Tilshead, Orcheston, Shrewton, Figheldean, Netheravon, Enford, Durrington (including Larkhill), Milston, Bulford, Cholderton, Wilsford & Lake, The Woodfords and Great Durnford. It encompasses the secondary schools The Stonehenge School in Amesbury and Avon Valley College in Durrington and includes primary schools which feed into secondary provision in the Community Areas of Durrington, Lavington and Salisbury. However, the School Planning Area (SPA) is based on the area(s) served by the Secondary Schools and covers schools in the towns and surrounding villages which feed into either The Stonehenge School in Amesbury or Avon Valley College in Durrington.

Go through the gate by the two information boards, with the car park behind you. Go straight ahead to the top of the escarpment in the area which contains two benches, with the White Horse clearly visible to your right. There are fine views here over the vale below. Go down steps and through the gate to the right and after approx. 10m, before you have reached the White Horse, turn right over a low bank between two tall ramparts. Climb up onto either of them and walk along it, parallel to the car park. This is the Iron Age hill fort of Bratton Camp/Castle. Turn left off it at the end and go over the stile or through the gate to your right, both of which give access to the tarmac road. Turn right onto this.

    8. LANDSCAPE TYPE 1: OPEN DOWNLAND Location and Boundaries 8.1. The landscape type encompasses a number of distinct downland blocks from the Marlborough Downs (1A) and Horton Down (1C) in the west running through to the Lambourn Downs (1B) and Blewbury Downs (1D) in the east. Boundaries are mainly defined by topography and the Upper Chalk geology, and in the north relate to the top of the Scarp (landscape type 5). To the south, the edge of the chalk similarly forms a distinct boundary. Overview The Open Downlands are the remote heart and core of the North Wessex Downs, with the dramatic landscapes created by the underlying chalk rocks being one of the defining features of the AONB. The subtle curves and undulations of the landform are revealed by the uniform clothing of cropped grass or cereals creating a landscape with a simple and elemental quality, accentuated by vast skies. The open, expansive views are punctuated by distinctive beech clumps crowning the downland summits, forming prominent and highly visible landmarks. Sparsely populated, the downlands possess a strong sense remoteness and isolation. Predominantly in arable cultivation these are landscapes of great seasonal variation, with muted browns and greys of the chalk and flinty soils in the ploughed autumn fields, giving way to fresh greens of the emerging crops in winter and spring and sweeping yellows and golds of summer. The characteristic close-cropped springy downland turf of the surviving herb-rich chalk grassland provides an important habitat and this landscape type contains the largest areas of designated chalk grassland in the AONB, with 15 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

    Wiltshire Yews An Inventory of Churchyard Yews Along the Nadder Valley. By Peter Norton 1 Introduction: This report is the third of five observations of churchyard Yews in and around the rivers Wylye, Ebble, Nadder and Bourne that converge with the Wiltshire / Hampshire Avon as it flows through the Salisbury area. The River Nadder is the most substantial of the Avon tributaries, rising around Donhead St Mary and Charlton within the Vale of Wardour and then flowing through some of the prettiest countryside in southern England, twisting and turning amongst the peaceful Wiltshire sheep meadows. During the course of its 22 miles the Nadder grows in size until it flows through Wilton House grounds where a fine Palladian Bridge straddles the river. Just outside of the grounds the Nadder and Wylye converge at Quidhampton. The Wylye then loses its identity and the Nadder flows its last few miles before converging with the Avon near to Salisbury Cathedral Close. All of the towns and villages along this route were included, with thirty four churchyards visited. Of these twenty five contained yews, and although many of those mentioned are small in stature compared to some of the veterans already recorded within the Yew Gazetteer, it was felt that, as time progresses, these younger trees will become our future giants for the next generations of yew enthusiasts. A total of one hundred and twenty nine trees were noted at these sites of which forty five had measurements recorded.     © 2010 George Herbert Walk Salisbury Cathedral to St Andrew’s Church, Lower Bemerton (2¼ miles of easy walking) We start our walk at the West end of Salisbury Cathedral, under the statue of George Herbert (1). If you face the West front, look to the right hand side of the main door. The statue of George Herbert is looking South to the left hand side of the smaller door. To attempt a detailed description of Salisbury Cathedral, one of the finest Gothic Cathedrals in Europe is beyond the scope of this walk but before starting the walk, you may wish to admire the interior of the Cathedral and see the stained glass window illustrating George Herbert’s poem ‘Love- George Herbert Statue Joy’ with vines illustrated in all three panels. The window is at the East end of the North Aisle beyond the choir. George Herbert is shown praying in the bottom left panel. Unfortunately the window is partly obscured by an undistinguished monument. George Herbert Window Returning to the West front of the Cathedral, we turn North and walk towards the High Street gate admiring the fine buildings of the Cathedral Close. Mompesson House of 1701 is open to the public and faces a green to our left as we proceed towards the High Street. As we go through the gate we can see, straight ahead of us, St Thomas’ church built for the builders of the Cathedral to worship in. Continue along the High Street looking at Mitre House (2) on the right as you reach the traffic lights.
