Irreverent Persia IRANIAN IRANIAN SERIES SERIES Poetry expressing criticism of social, political and cultural life is a vital integral part of IRREVERENT PERSIA Persian literary history. Its principal genres – invective, satire and burlesque – have been INVECTIVE, SATIRICAL AND BURLESQUE POETRY very popular with authors in every age. Despite the rich uninterrupted tradition, such texts FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE TIMURID PERIOD have been little studied and rarely translated. Their irreverent tones range from subtle (10TH TO 15TH CENTURIES) irony to crude direct insults, at times involving the use of outrageous and obscene terms. This anthology includes both major and minor poets from the origins of Persian poetry RICCARDO ZIPOLI (10th century) up to the age of Jâmi (15th century), traditionally considered the last great classical Persian poet. In addition to their historical and linguistic interest, many of these poems deserve to be read for their technical and aesthetic accomplishments, setting them among the masterpieces of Persian literature. Riccardo Zipoli is professor of Persian Language and Literature at Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, where he also teaches Conceiving and Producing Photography. The western cliché about Persian poetry is that it deals with roses, nightingales, wine, hyperbolic love-longing, an awareness of the transience of our existence, and a delicate appreciation of life’s fleeting pleasures. And so a great deal of it does. But there is another side to Persian verse, one that is satirical, sardonic, often obscene, one that delights in ad hominem invective and no-holds barred diatribes. Perhaps surprisingly enough for the uninitiated reader it is frequently the same poets who write both kinds of verse. -

Iran and the Caucasus 21 (2017) 376-380 Yezdistan versus Kurdistan: Another Legend on the Origin of the Yezidis Victoria Arakelova Russian-Armenian State University, Yerevan Abstract The paper focuses on the analysis of the term Yezdistan (Ēzdīstān) attested in a Yezidi leg- end, having obvious parallels with the Shahnameh’s “Tale of Zahhak”. It is particularly in- teresting that this plot does not occur in any of the Kurmanji versions of the Shahnameh ever recorded in Armenia and represents, in fact, a separate legend out of the epic context. Keywords Yezidis Origin, Yezdistan, Kurdistan, Shahnameh The syncretic nature of Yezidism, revealed in its various aspects (see, e.g., Arakelova 2004; eadem 2015; Asatrian/Arakelova 2014: 121-132), is particu- larly obvious in the fact of coexistence of several legends on the origin of the Yezidi people in the tradition. Two of them—one of the pronounced Abrahamic background, and the other, going back to an Old Iranian my- thologem—have been previously discussed in detail (Kreyenbroek 1995: 182-192; Spät 2002; Asatrian 2007; Asatrian/Arakelova 2014: 72-76). However, the Yezidi lore attests one more ethno-genetic myth, going back to a Shahnameh plot, which occurs in a text written down in Arme- nia, in the 40-s of the last century, by the prominent Yezidi pandit Amine Avdal. His informant, Ahmade Čolo from the village of Alagaz, Ashtarak region, was a well-known story-teller and an outstanding connoisseur of the Yezidi oral tradition․ Originally from historical Western Armenia, he moved to Eastern Armenia after the 1915 Genocide in the Ottoman Em- pire. -

The authors of the monograph provide a critical analysis of both the arguments and terms put forward primarily by Soviet Oriental school, and those introduced in modern nationalistic writings, which misrepresent the background and cultural heritage of Nezami. Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period. Dissertation Advisor: Françoise Massardier-Kenney This dissertation addresses the need to expand translation scholarship through the inclusion of research into different translation traditions and histories (D’hulst 2001: 5; Bandia 2006; Tymoczko 2006: 15; Baker 2009: 1); the importance of compiling bibliographies of translations in a variety of translation traditions (Pym 1998: 42; D’hulst 2010: 400); and the need for empirical studies on the functional aspects of (translation) paratexts (Genette 1997: 12–15). It provides a digital bibliography that documents what works of Persian literature were translated into English, by whom, where, and when, and explores how these translations were presented to Anglophone readers across three historical periods—1925–1941, 1942–1979, and 1980–2015— marked by important socio-political events in the contemporary history of Iran and the country’s shifting relations with the Anglophone West. Through a methodical search in the library of congress catalogued in OCLC WorldCat, a bibliographical database including 863 editions of Persian-English literary translations along with their relevant metadata—titles in Persian, authors, translators, publishers, and dates and places of publication—was compiled and, through a quantitative analysis of this bibliographical data over time, patterns of translation publication across the given periods -

Water, mountain, earth, sky, sun, moon, stars, wind, plants, animals, rain, and fire are among natural effective and mythopoeic forces. Generally, structure of Iranian myths is a kind of believe to dichotomy in nature, in human and in contradictory forces available in the world. One of the most important aspects of this contradiction is continuous battle between good and evil. Since Iran with diverse natural geography is the land of great conflicts, main issue in this research is determining the role of natural conflicts in creating good and evil beliefs in Iranian myths. In this study, data are gathered using documentary sources and research method is comparative, descriptive, and qualitative analyses. There is natural contradiction in every land in nature and natural geography. Results indicate that among different causes that lead to formation of myths, nature and its available conflicts have great role in creation of such beliefs. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Based on Iranian myths, there has always been a confrontation between two Ahurai and Ahrimeni forces in progress. This issue has caused the human nature to be inflicted with such a situation. One of the works wherein the manifestation of myth, epic and history can be seen in the form of the confrontation between the good and evil is Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh which is an identity-bestowing book that besides this characteristic, contains many ethical and instructional concepts, as well. One of these concepts is avarice that creeps into the ego of the ideal and honorable characters in Shahnameh and adversely influences them and makes them encounter many ethical challenges. In this work, avarice has been depicted in the form of an ogre that is unequaled amongst the evils and deemed to be the most harmful. The investigation of the embodiments of this immorality in Shahnameh shows that Afrasiab Turani is the greediest person whose greedy behaviors cause the people from Iran and Turan to be repeatedly afflicted with financial and life problems and the blood of many innocent persons has been shed on the ground from the two sides. -

A Persian epic hero should be followed in myths according to the primitive folklore ideas of these people. These epics could be found in Persian literature specially “Shahnameh of Firdausi”. According the social history of Iran, these epic characters were interpreted as mystical ones, literary visualization of which represented in mystic stories of “Sohrawardi” as well as pictorial imaginary is shown in Iranian miniatures for “Shahnameh” in all schools of Persian painting- specially Safavied school. After a brief summary of the mythical hero, this article will explain the various sides of the epic hero’s structure and analyzes the character of a mystical hero based on traditional theories of art.In the case of heroes, there are some differences between mythical and mystical views. For mythical view, a hero is a superman who overcomes personal limits and leaves his normal life and succeeds to travel through a risky path. An epic hero is also a superman who struggles for the pride of a nation. His battle is a battle of good and evil and his character is based on the dualism of which epic stories represent carefully. But in mystic view of miniatures, a human is the God- Almighty successor on the earth displaying a prototype visualized by the perfect human. -
