  • Players – Terry Hibbitt – a Wayward Genius
Players – Terry Hibbitt – A wayward genius Terry Hibbitt‘s impressive entrance into senior football hinted that he could be one of the most glorious talents to emerge from Leeds United‘s golden generation of the Sixties. He was given his first team debut as an 18-year-old against Nottingham Forest on 19 February 1966, coming on as a first half substitute for Paul Madeley. Within minutes of taking the field Hibbitt scored a stunning goal, lobbing goalkeeper Peter Grummitt from 20 yards. For the next three years the talented left winger continued to show rich potential whenever given an opportunity by Don Revie, but he disappeared into the cul-de-sac of reserve team football after the talented Eddie Gray established himself as Revie‘s preferred choice on the left flank. A £30,000 transfer to Newcastle United in 1971 gave Hibbitt the chance of reviving his career, and he used the platform to give clear evidence of his prowess in a playmaking role. Hibbitt‘s younger brother Ken, born on 3 January 1951 and an England Under-23 cap, also enjoyed a long and successful professional career, mainly at Wolves (1968-84), with spells at Bradford Park Avenue, Seattle Sounders, Coventry City and Bristol Rovers. Frail of build and bandy of leg, Terry Hibbitt did not have a classic athlete‘s build, but he was an outstanding midfielder, playing cultured and intelligent football. He possessed a great range of passing skills and an instinctive feel for the through ball which benefited Malcolm Macdonald among others. Toon midfield colleague Terry McDermott: ―Hibby had a left foot that was like a magic wand.

  • Bill Shankly - the Glenbuck Years
Bill Shankly - The Glenbuck Years BILL SHANKLY - THE GLENBUCK YEARS Researched and written by David P. Worthington BA (Hons), PG Dip, MA. Typeset by Elaine Bell, Baird Institute, Cumnock December 1997 __________________________________________________________________ The almost abandoned village of Glenbuck sits quietly and unpretentiously on the edge of the Ayrshire coalfield just of the main road from Muirkirk to Ayr. The settlement had started life as one that relied on agriculture; however, by around 1800 it had been dragged into the world of industrialisation. Glenbuck was home to 800 people with public housing built in for them. It also had an ironworks with its foundry and blast furnace, a limestone quarry, two dedicated ironstone pits, two coal mines and two pits that gave up both coal and ironstone. The ironworks were closed in 1813 but the coal miners remained enabling the locals to eke out a hard and difficult existence. It was against this background that John Shankly moved to Glenbuck from the nearby village of Douglas to seek work in the chosen profession of tailoring. He met and married Barbara Blyth who came from one of Glenbuck’s most celebrated families. Her brother Bob, a top class sprinter, played football for Glasgow Rangers, Middlesborough, Preston and Dundee before becoming player-manager and finally chairman at Portsmouth. A second brother, Billy played for Portsmouth, Preston, and Carlisle before joining Bob as an administrator and director, and then chairman of Carlisle. Bill, or Willy as he was more commonly known, was born to John and Barbara Shankly on the 2nd September 1913, the ninth of ten children, youngest of five boys.

1 16 February 1938 Jack Balmer scores Liverpool’s fastest league goal as the Reds get the perfect start in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Though reports vary, the officially recorded time is just ten seconds, as T.G. Jones’s poor clearance falls to Balmer, who makes no mistake to put Liverpool 1-0 up. Though the Toffees level just seven minutes later, two late John Shafto goals complete a much-needed 3-1 win for the Reds. 27 August 1984 Paul Walsh makes an incredible start to life as a Liverpool player by scoring after just 14 seconds of his home debut against West Ham United. The diminutive striker, signed for £700,000 from Luton Town, will score 37 goals in 112 games for the Reds, though injuries affect his time at Anfield. The Reds go on to win the game against the Hammers 3-0. 8 May 1979 Liverpool make a dream start against Aston Villa as Bob Paisley’s side look for the win that will clinch an 11th top-flight title. With only 47 seconds on the clock, Terry McDermott crosses in to find full-back Alan Kennedy, who makes no mistake from close range. The Reds go on to win 3-0 and the victory ensures second-placed West Brom can’t catch Bob Paisley’s side, who also post a 17 LIVERPOOL: MINUTE BY MINUTE record number of points – 68 – during the two-points- for-a-win era. 14 December 1996 Robbie Fowler moves on to 99 goals for Liverpool as he puts the Reds ahead against Middlesbrough after just 29 seconds at Anfield.
