Word from the Commissioner
The wait is over and the VIBE Far North Queensland Super League is back for the fifth consecutive season. Anticipation is high as the north’s premier men’s Basketball competition tips off again with games sure to leave fans on the edge of their seats.
It will be tough to build on the success and intensity of last season, but with Basketball bragging rights for an entire region on the line once again, there’s no doubt the players of the seven competing clubs will be putting their bodies on the line and giving it their all.
All-Stars, Bulldogs, Mulgrave Magic, Phoenix, Redlynch, Saints and Timberwolves will once again do battle over 14-regular season rounds. The top four clubs will then advance into a three-round elimination final series, with the victor earning the right to be crowned 2011 VIBE FNQ Super League Champions.
This year will easily be the most exciting season we have seen with close to 70 of the region’s top ‘hoopers’ doing battle on the hardwood each Sunday at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre.
Besides local stars like Deba George, Curt Ahwang, Rowan Gray, Gary Boodnikoff, Gausa Arnold, Kane Oakley and James ‘Billy’ Comino, this season will also see a number of international players from the U.S.A, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and France all step on the Fish Tank floor looking to prove themselves.
I would like to extend a special thanks to new naming rights sponsor ‘VIBE Bar’ and major sponsor ‘Hobbs Financial’ for both coming on-board to add to professionalism of the league.
Overall the 2010-11 VIBE F.N.Q Super League is shaping as the most successful season to date and easily one of the most intense sporting competitions in the FNQ region.
Make sure you get to a game!
Joel Khalu

2010/11 Season Preview All Stars
MAJOR SPONSOR N/A
2009-10 FINISH 7th
RETURNING Michael Cresswell, Michael Paiwan, Danny Nielson, Corey Whitaker, Max Duffy
PLAYERS GAINED Bryce Cummings (USA) Denzel Philpot (Bulldogs) Laurence Hobson (Bulldog) Ladell Nakachi, Kailou George (Redlynch), Keegan Bussell
PLAYERS LOST Aaron Bin Tahal (Redlynch) Sam Magill, Elijah Raymond, Brett Stanley, Shannon Roberts
RESTRICTED None
2010-11 COACH Hassan Bin Tahal (2nd Season)
SEASON PREVIEW All-Stars struggled through last Super League season and were the only team that was unable to register a single win. This season looks optimistic however with the signing of shooting guard Bryce Cummings direct from Wisconsin, USA. Retuning small forward Michael Paiwan (21.5ppg) will also need to put up big numbers if the team wants to taste success. With the departure of Aaron Bin Tahal (7.9ppg) to Redlynch, look for Kailou George (5.4ppg) to increase his scoring output at the point guard position. With some leadership from veteran Michael Cresswell (16.0ppg) the All-Stars could definitely surprise a few teams this season.
2010-11 PREDICTION 6th overall at the end of the regular season.
6
Bulldogs
MAJOR SPONSOR: LORDS FINANCIAL
2009-10 FINISH: 6th
RETURNING: Brodie Fry-Simmons, Jason Osborne, Michael Demertze, Brendon Kruger, Luke Ellwood
PLAYERS GAINED: Shane Storti, Matt Martin, Chris Remedio, Patrick Hawash, Daniel Majer, Tom Ford, Zane McClosky
PLAYERS LOST: Aaron Schulze (Timberwolves), Denzel Philpot (All-Stars), Laurence Hobson (All-Stars)
RESTRICTED: None
2010-11 COACH: Brad Burdon (3rd Season)
SEASON PREVIEW: The fate of the Bulldogs this season rests with their returning ‘BIG 3’ of Michael Demertze (18.0ppg), Jason Osborne (7.8ppg) and Luke Ellwood (7.0ppg). If these three QLD Junior representatives can find their confidence and rhythm early on the Bulldogs just might be able to sneak out some wins this season. The loss of floor general Aaron Schulze (10.2ppg) will leave a hole at the point but look for Brendan Kruger (3.8ppg) to step up and run the show. If Demertze has another breakout season the 16-year old could become the youngest player ever to lead the Super League in scoring.
2010-11 PREDICTION: 7th overall at the end of the regular season.
7
Mulgrave Magic
MAJOR SPONSOR: N/A
2009-10 FINISH: 5th
RETURNING: Jeff Cotter, Patrick Donald, Nick Howton, Craig Fairly, Kris Johnstone, Dariush Mirshafiei, Edgar Randolph
PLAYERS GAINED: Andrew Clarke, Duncan Watts, Charles Opio (Overseas), Matt Smith (Saints) Murray Smith (NSW)
PLAYERS LOST: Nathan Selsby (Saints), Ryan Lange (Brisbane), Kevin Shephard
RESTRICTED: None
2010-11 COACH: Jeff Cotter (1st Season)
SEASON PREVIEW: Athletic swingman Charles Opio returns to boost the Magic after a year travelling overseas. The former Super League Most Valuable Player will need to have another huge season if the Magic are to find success. Another positive for the club is the off- season signing of former Cairns Taipans NBL player Andrew Clarke. The veteran small forward will be difficult to stop with his ability to play inside and out. Returning Captain Jeff Cotter (15.0ppg) will once again direct his troops around the floor and big- man Patrick Donald (12.2ppg) will be ‘Mr. Reliable’ inside the paint. With a number of solid role players the Magic should be knocking on the door of the playoffs.
2010-11 PREDICTION: 5th overall at the end of the regular season.
8
Phoenix
MAJOR SPONSOR: WILL MOVE REMOVALS
2009-10 FINISH: FNQ Super League Champions
RETURNING: Jacob Pilot, Ryan Cetinich, Curt Ahwang, Rowan Gray, Joel Khalu, Mark Moseling
PLAYERS GAINED: Gary Boodnikoff, Sam Mayer, Zac Ross (Townsville)
PLAYERS LOST: Matthew Adekponya (USA), Richard Ketchell, Francis Loban, Kerli Sambo
RESTRICTED: Curt Ahwang
2010-11 COACH: Joel Khalu (2nd Season)
SEASON PREVIEW: Back to back Super League champions Phoenix have made minimal off-season moves. With the loss of young star guard Matthew Adekponya (19.2ppg) to the U.S College system the club signed NBL veteran and former Taipans sharpshooter Gary Boodnikoff. The return of long-term core group of Ryan Cetinich (5.5ppg), Jacob Pilot (8.5ppg), Mark Moseling (13.9ppg), Curt Ahwang (16.9ppg), Joel Khalu (19.2ppg) and Rowan Gray (19.6ppg) is still intact and the team also welcomes back athletic guard Zac Ross from Townsville. Young forward Sam Mayer will become the youngest ever player to play Super League Basketball at just 14-years of age. You can never count out the Phoenix come finals time.
2010-11 PREDICTION: 3rd overall at the end of the regular season.
9
Redlynch Royals
MAJOR SPONSOR: FUTURE DENTAL
2009-10 FINISH: 2nd
RETURNING: Gausa Arnold, James Mitchell, Billy Ross, Mick Downer
PLAYERS GAINED: Aaron Bin Tahal (All-Stars), Brian Wash (Saints), David Mills (Saints), Aaron Fearne (Saints) Paul Latter (Saints)
PLAYERS LOST: Kailou George (All-Stars), Reece Craigie (NSW), Michael Chitham, Bryce Whitaker (Darwin), Jeromie Hill (USA)
RESTRICTED: James Mitchell
2010-11 COACH: Aaron Fearne (1st Season)
SEASON PREVIEW: Redlynch showed last year they have what it takes to be a serious title contender. This year they come into the season as an even bigger threat. With the most pro-active off- season of any club the Royals signed four Saints players including Brian Walsh (9.9ppg), Aaron Fearne (6.6ppg), Paul Latter (10.6ppg) and David Mills (11.9ppg). In addition they picked up exciting young Cairns Marlins guard Aaron Bin Tahal (7.9ppg) from All- Stars. Add these recruits to veterans Billy Ross (15.0ppg) and Gausa Arnold (12.0ppg) and you have a legitimate contender. The emergence of Taipans development player James Mitchell (12.8ppg) will also be something to keep an eye on.
2010-11 PREDICTION: 2nd overall at the end of the regular season.
10
Saints
MAJOR SPONSOR: PRP NATIONAL PROPERTY CONSULTANTS
2009-10 FINISH: 3rd
RETURNING: Anthony Plummer, Peterson Opio, Robert Cowell, CJ Ahwang
PLAYERS GAINED: Brenton Campbell (Adelaide), Kane Oakley (Adelaide), Gareth Dawson (New Zealand) Chris Daniel (New Zealand), Nathan Selsby (Mulgrave Magic)
PLAYERS LOST: Brian Walsh (Redlynch) Ryan Morris, Aaron Fearne (Redlynch), Deba George, David Mills (Redlynch), Paul Latter (Redlynch), Matt Smith (Mulgrave Magic)
RESTRICTED: Gareth Dawson & Chris Daniel
2010-11 COACH: Jamie Pearlman (1st Season)
SEASON PREVIEW: There are some familiar faces back with the Saints group but a lot more new ones. Cleaning house in the offseason the Saints offloaded a number of long-term players and recruited a team that is favoured to take out the Super League championship. New Zealand dynamic duo Chris Daniel and Gareth Dawson will both be tough to stop after both having outstanding seasons in the NZNBL. Former Marlins guard Brenton Campbell returns to Cairns for his first Super League season and he will be well supported in the backcourt by former Mulgrave Magic player Nathan Selsby (19.9ppg). Add to this former Taipans player Kane Oakley and you can see how this group took out the BLITZ pre-season title recently. Silky smooth guard CJ Ahwang (21.7ppg) could be the danger man though and look for him to play a big part in the Saints title march.
2010-11 PREDICTION: 1st overall at the end of the regular season.
11
Timberwolves
MAJOR SPONSOR: N/A
2008-09 FINISH: 4th
RETURNING: Grant Gonsalves, David Dimla, Travis Thorne, James Comino, John Fa’aoso, Brent Khalu, Kris Whelan, Dean Brebner, Mario Assan, Thomas Samuel
PLAYERS GAINED: Aaron Schulze (Bulldogs), Adam Piszczuk
PLAYERS LOST: Aundras Wackerow
RESTRICTED: James Comino & Dean Brebner
2010-11 COACH: Dean Brebner (1st Season)
SEASON PREVIEW: Consistency has always been the key for the Timberwolves club and this season the team once again returns ten familiar faces. The Wolves title chances will rest on the performances of MVP candidates James Comino (23.2ppg) and Dean Brebner (22.4ppg) and their main supporter Travis Thorne (19.5ppg). Returning to the Super League this season for the T-Wolves will be Adam Piszczuk who will provide a monster post presence inside. Supporting Piszczuk from the perimeter will be shooters Grant Gonsalves (8.5ppg), Kris Whelan (8.1ppg) and Brent Khalu (5.0ppg) and lightening quick guard David Dimla (8.2ppg) will once again cause havoc for opposition ball- carriers. Look for new signing Aaron Schulze to have a break-out season now being surrounded by consistent finishers. Don’t sleep on the Wolves come playoff time.
2010-11 PREDICTION: 4th overall at the end of the regular season.
