Anticipation is high as the north’s premier men’s Basketball competition tips off again with games sure to leave fans on the edge of their seats. It will be tough to build on the success and intensity of last season, but with Basketball bragging rights for an entire region on the line once again, there’s no doubt the players of the seven competing clubs will be putting their bodies on the line and giving it their all. All-Stars, Bulldogs, Mulgrave Magic, Phoenix, Redlynch, Saints and Timberwolves will once again do battle over 14-regular season rounds. The top four clubs will then advance into a three-round elimination final series, with the victor earning the right to be crowned 2011 VIBE FNQ Super League Champions. This year will easily be the most exciting season we have seen with close to 70 of the region’s top ‘hoopers’ doing battle on the hardwood each Sunday at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre. Besides local stars like Deba George, Curt Ahwang, Rowan Gray, Gary Boodnikoff, Gausa Arnold, Kane Oakley and James ‘Billy’ Comino, this season will also see a number of international players from the U.S.A, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and France all step on the Fish Tank floor looking to prove themselves. I would like to extend a special thanks to new naming rights sponsor ‘VIBE Bar’ and major sponsor ‘Hobbs Financial’ for both coming on-board to add to professionalism of the league. Overall the 2010-11 VIBE F.N.Q Super League is shaping as the most successful season to date and easily one of the most intense sporting competitions in the FNQ region. Make sure you get to a game! This season looks optimistic however with the signing of shooting guard Bryce Cummings direct from Wisconsin, USA. Retuning small forward Michael Paiwan (21.5ppg) will also need to put up big numbers if the team wants to taste success. With the departure of Aaron Bin Tahal (7.9ppg) to Redlynch, look for Kailou George (5.4ppg) to increase his scoring output at the point guard position. With some leadership from veteran Michael Cresswell (16.0ppg) the All-Stars could definitely surprise a few teams this season. 2010-11 PREDICTION 6th overall at the end of the regular season. 6 Bulldogs MAJOR SPONSOR: LORDS FINANCIAL 2009-10 FINISH: 6th RETURNING: Brodie Fry-Simmons, Jason Osborne, Michael Demertze, Brendon Kruger, Luke Ellwood PLAYERS GAINED: Shane Storti, Matt Martin, Chris Remedio, Patrick Hawash, Daniel Majer, Tom Ford, Zane McClosky PLAYERS LOST: Aaron Schulze (Timberwolves), Denzel Philpot (All-Stars), Laurence Hobson (All-Stars) RESTRICTED: None 2010-11 COACH: Brad Burdon (3rd Season) SEASON PREVIEW: The fate of the Bulldogs this season rests with their returning ‘BIG 3’ of Michael Demertze (18.0ppg), Jason Osborne (7.8ppg) and Luke Ellwood (7.0ppg). If these three QLD Junior representatives can find their confidence and rhythm early on the Bulldogs just might be able to sneak out some wins this season. The loss of floor general Aaron Schulze (10.2ppg) will leave a hole at the point but look for Brendan Kruger (3.8ppg) to step up and run the show. The former Super League Most Valuable Player will need to have another huge season if the Magic are to find success. Another positive for the club is the off- season signing of former Cairns Taipans NBL player Andrew Clarke. The veteran small forward will be difficult to stop with his ability to play inside and out.     TAIPANS FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TAIPANS FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Program Description: The Taipans Future Development Program is the first step in the elite development pathway for Far North Queensland. It is designed to identify and work with talented players from 10 to 13 and is an integral part of the Taipans Player pathway. It is aimed at teaching technical and tactical elements of Basketball along with introducing athletes and coaches to essential sports science areas. The program is run under the direction of Cairns Basketball and will follow the new nationally developed skill development curriculum designed by Basketball Australia under the guidance of Cairns Taipans Coaches. Age: 10 to 13 year olds Program Numbers: Approxiametly 50 boys and 50 girls will be selected to the Taipans Future Development Program from the Under 12 and Under 14 age groups. Final numbers for this program will be dependent on coach interest and should we fail to find enough interested coaches. Objectives: This program is designed as the perfect stepping stone or transition into representative program it provides grounding for kids aged 10 to 13 years of age and is focused on enhancing the basic fundamental skill set of all players and introducing them to essential sports sciences that pertain to Basketball. Key Objectives for FDP athletes and coaches: • Preparation for representative Basketball with a focus on QNJBC and State Classics competition • Access to state of the art High Performance coaching and training facilities • Provide a unified and balanced annual training plan. • Provide FNQ’s most talented junior basketball players with the correct tools to become state players and provide the selected athletes with a tailored, measured and effective program of development to enable them to reach their full potential.

    Jazz to host NBL’s Sydney Kings in Preseason Opener Utah to host Australian team in first game inside the newly renovated Vivint Smart Home Arena on Oct. 2 SALT LAKE CITY (July 31, 2017) – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Basketball League (NBL) announced today the Utah Jazz will host the Sydney Kings on Oct. 2 at Vivint Smart Home Arena, marking the first time that NBL teams will travel to the U.S. to play against NBA Teams. “The Jazz are the most internationally diverse team in the NBA, including two players from Australia,” said Utah Jazz President Steve Starks. “Our franchise is excited to host an NBL team from Sydney in the first game played at our newly remodeled Vivint Smart Home Arena.” Joe Ingles and Danté Exum are the two current Aussies on the Jazz, after a record-tying eight Australian players appeared on 2016-17 opening night NBA rosters. Ingles began his professional career with the South Dragons of the NBL (2006-09) at the age of 18, earning 2006-07 NBL Rookie of the Year and winning an NBL championship in 2008-09. “This is massive for Australian basketball and an exciting opportunity for NBA and NBL players to compete together on the same floor,” said Ingles. “As an Aussie who began my career in the NBL and now entering my fourth season with Utah, I am very proud of the growth of the game in my home country and can’t wait for the Jazz and Salt Lake City to play host to Sydney this fall.” A native of Happy Valley, South Australia, Ingles re-signed with the Jazz to a multi-year contract on July 25.
