This plan outlines, for Cairns Basketball, the foundation for our efforts, programs and focus over the next five years. The plan will provide a clear direction for the sport, provide an outline of the activities we will undertake and set some ambitious targets for CBI to obtain. As has been the case over the last twelve months, the sport will continue to set itself to achieve the highest of standards with the sole endeavour of providing a better sport for the next generation our focus. The plan is the result of extensive consultation and collaboration between stakeholders at all levels in the game. The structure of the organisation and relationships developed over the recent past ensure we step forward unified in purpose. The CBI Management Committee acknowledges the contribution of these people and that they in no small way now have ownership of the strategic plan for the sport. After reading the strategic plan for Cairns Basketball you will understand our strategic priorities for the next period and know the initiatives that underpin the implementation of these strategic priorities. We now look forward to “driving our sport” toward such outcomes. Dean P Morzone QC CBI President 3 Cairns Basketball Strategic Plan 2014 - 2018 Executive Summary This Strategic Plan is the cornerstone of the cohesive and outward -looking for Cairns Basketball Inc. The organisation has enhanced its structure through governance and management reform over the past twelve months. This process has now positioned the sport well within the Far North Queensland sporting landscape. With a ‘unified’ structure and innovative approach CBI is ready to capitalise on this position. The Strategic Plan is based on the input received from Board Members, State Council Representatives, participants, senior staff and other consultants/stakeholders. The Strategic Plan begins with the mission, our purpose, responsibilities, values and ultimately the vision for CBI. Our five-year targets are outlined, and it includes some challenging targets for our sport to reach by 2018. We continue to aim to be amongst the best administered Basketball Associations in Australia while providing the strong pathway for our participants. Our membership has high expectations for Basketball and it must be stated that as an organisation we share this expectation of success. Current and future members will readily identify with a sport that is thrilling, dynamic, focused on its participation roots and set on being one that is the first choice of the Cairns community. It will be imperative that throughout the 2014 to 2085 cycle Cairns Basketball positions itself as a sport within the mainstream of Australia. We have identified three strategic priority areas which will give Cairns Basketball a clear focus into the future David Herbert CEO Cairns Basketball 4 Cairns Basketball Strategic Plan 2014 - 2018 Cairns Basketball Inc OUR VISION Cairns Basketball Inc will be a recognised leader in our sport for participants of all ages to grow, develop and fulfill their ambition in a safe environment OUR FOCUS Sport Management Sport Development Operational Services OUR CORE BUSINESS Management & Junior Senior Participation & Game Facility Administration Competition Competition Growth Development Development 5 Cairns Basketball Strategic Plan 2014 - 2018 Bold Vision now a Real Force After the Second World War there was a new wave of sporting culture to hit the region lead by American Service men and women. James Graham Bruce was a driving force behind the game reaching Far North Queensland. Bruce commenced an association in Mossman in 1957 with Mr Pryce, established fixtures with games held out of the old shire hall in Mossman. Cairns Basketball has clocked up many firsts in its history including the first female Queenslander to play basketball for Australia (Raylene Lynch), the first Torres Strait Islander to play for Australia (Danny Morseu), the Cairns Marlins are the first and only All – Australian team to win a National ABA Championship (2004 and again in 2007), The Cairns Indigenous Marlins were the inaugural winners of the National ATSI Championship (2006) and The first indigenous Australian to be drafted into the NBA (Nathan Jawai) and followed Aaron Baynes who became our first Olympian. The first players to represent Australia from Cairns Basketball were Ms Raylene Lynch (1958) and Mr Danny Morseu (1980 ) (Torres Strait Islander). Cairns Basketball was the driving force behind t he establishment of the Cairns Taipans which celebrated 15 great years in 2013 and is still going strong. Rodd Popp and Denis Donaghy pioneered this NBL Club. The Cairns Taipans represents the pinnacle of development of representative players and pathway s. The Cairns Taipans continue as an independent NBL club but has formed a valuable partnership with the grain roots at Cairns Basketball. A representative grass roots member has a position on the Taipans Board. Core talented and dedicated staff and an a rmy of passionate volunteers drive Cairns Basketball.
