Morpeth is a thriving, busy club with lots going on both on and off the field. We enjoy a full programme of events throughout the year which you can find on our club website.

With a lot of help from players, volunteers, supporters we have been able to improve and develop our club facilities.

In the summer Nat West Rugby Force group have been busy around the club painting and general tidying of the rugby grounds. We have also decorated the club house main function room and the changing rooms. We look forward to another busy season and further improvements.

We are a welcoming and inclusive club and I hope that you enjoy visiting. We reinforce the RFU core values that are detailed below.

0800 612 8414 - 07957 495503 0800 612 8414 - 07957 495503 Morpeth Age Grade Rugby 2019-2020

Under 12s April 2019

Morpeth RFC have been running a successful and vibrant Mini and Junior Section for many years, with players’ ages ranging from 5 through to 16, arranged in teams based on their school ages. We welcome both boys and girls, who play mixed rugby until the end of the under 12 age group, before the girls embark on their own, where we have teams at both under 13 and under 15. The teams play in a variety of festivals, local fixtures and cup competitions throughout the season, mixed with training sessions. Our youth teams from under 12 to under 16 also enjoy hosting and playing against visiting clubs.

If would like to arrange a fixture, please contact the junior fixture secretary via the club website www.morpethrfc.co.uk

We have an enthusiastic team of qualified and DBS approved volunteer coaches at each age group, who introduce the young players to the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. On any given Sunday, between 10.30 and noon, you will see nearly 250 youngsters enjoying playing Rugby along with large support creating a truly inclusive environment. Thanks to all the coaches and volunteers who give up significant amounts of their time for the Players.

We continue to work within the Age Grade Rules of Play and support the half game rule which encourages development of skills on a gradual, year by year basis, meaning the players enjoy their rugby journey even more and so should stay and play into our senior teams. Each of our age groups have success each season in one way or another. Whether it be increasing numbers, retaining and developing players, winning County cups or progressing further in Festivals. The real success however is getting as many young players engaged in playing and enjoying competitive sport and learning about themselves, others and Rugby values.

As you will see from the centre pages of this programme, many of our youngsters will go on to play for the first team and a thriving youth section is the lifeblood of our Club. The transition from Youth rugby to Senior rugby is expertly managed through our successful Colts team who look to retain and develop each player’s skills and we wish the new Colts every success on their future Rugby journeys.

For further details on team fixtures, contacts and information please log on to the Club website and go into the “Teams “section and look for “Morpeth Mini / Juniors”.

0800 612 8414 - 07957 495503 Mighty Peth and Morpeth 7s

Thank you to everyone who supported Mighty Peth this summer, whether as a player or coach on the field, or as a sponsor or supporter off field. We had the honour of winning the Pocklington 7s on Good Friday, after a last second try & conversion, having come back from 12 points down with 2 minutes left against a strong Hull RFC squad. The Pock 7s is Yorkshire’s oldest 7s competition going back over 60 years. We join a list of illustrious names on the Pock 7s trophy and we’ll go back next year to mount a defence of our title! That win, with runners up at Morpeth and Billingham qualified us for the national 24sevens finals at Nottingham. Having qualified from our group, we were beaten in the quarters against the eventual winners and national champions. The Morpeth 7s winners, Akuma Beavers were the runners up that day which was a great achievement. Plans are already in place for Mighty Peth next year and for the Morpeth 7s which is fixtured for Saturday 2nd May 2020.

Please get in touch for information and entry details for Morpeth 7s. Contact Paul Jackson for any information – 07753 573534

0800 612 8414 - 07957 495503 Programme Notes It is with pleasure that we are able once again to welcome the players, officials and supporters of LYMM RFC to Mitford Road for this Northern Division North Premier League match for what is the 4th occasion that the Cheshire side have visited Morpeth.

The first time Lymm played at Mitford Road was in March 1998 when both sides were in the Thwaites North Two League. It was our first season in that League, Ritchie Young was captain and we had to have 5 replacements for each game – which caused a lot of problems for most sides .Earlier that season we lost at Lymm by 6-18 but we won the home match by 30-0.The 2 sides that played that game were – LYMM – M Bower, A Holloway, N Rowe, N Shaw(c), S Williams, C Elliott, N Slater, J Ferguson, A Yates, K Broadbent, D Reed, T Griffiths, G Larkin, R Cook, S Harrison.

MORPETH – W Munro, J Dungait, I Davies, A Hall, N Dodds, C Lishman, P Jackson, A Clark, J Goodfellow, D Clark, J Stafford, R Young, D Hutton, A Cameron, B Dale.

Several of that side are still involved with the Club – Will Munro and Ian Davies play for the Stags, John Dungait is a Club sponsor and looks after the Clubs grounds, Chris Lishman is a local photographer, Paul Jackson is Chairman of Selectors and still plays, John Stafford is Chairman of Rugby and Past President, John Goodfellow is a Club sponsor and helps organise the annual Morpeth Farmers Game, Duncan Clark is a Club sponsor and his son is in the First XV squad, Ben Dale looks after the Stags and still plays while Duncan Hutton is the Club’s County Rep.

In the 1998/99 season we won at Lymm by 11-6 and at home by 33-0 while in the 1999/2000 season – the last season we played Lymm we won at home by 39-18 but lost away by 13-16. At the end of the 1999/2000 the Leagues were reformed, our League was divided into East and West and we moved into North Two East and we have not played Lymm since – we also lost fixtures against Blackburn, Aldwinians and Vale of Lune who all moved into North Two West.

Lymm are at the moment mid table having won 9, lost 9 and drawn 1. They have an excellent home record – losing only one of their 10 games - to Blaydon by 28-34 while their away record is winning two of their 9 games – winning at Ilkley and they had an excellent win at Rossendale.

Earlier in the season we travelled to Lymm and were well beaten by 23-42 – six tries to two tries. The Morpeth XV earlier in October was – A Telford, J Ward, S Hornby, J Phillips, J McKay, B Hornby, J Elliott, C Wilson, C Hill, T Moody, S Long, B Jackson, J Williams, C Donnelly, J Millington & replacements were Steve Irving, James Armstrong & Ian Burnham. 9 of that squad are involved today.

Having had a good home win against Billingham in our last home game we were well beaten at Rossendale in horrific conditions - but it was the same for both sides and we simply did not play well enough. This afternoon gives the team another opportunity to show what they can be capable of.

The side will show several changes from the side that travelled to Rossendale with Steve Evans, Jonny Ward, Kieran Smith, Simon Manley, Steve Irving, Matt Denton and Mickey Craigs coming in to the 18.

0800 612 8414 - 07957 495503 We give a warm welcome to this afternoon’s referee who is NATHAN HOWARD from the RFU North Group. As always we hope that he enjoys his afternoon at Mitford Road. Finally our thanks once again to this afternoons sponsors who are RYECROFT GLENTON – their continued support is greatly appreciated.

The CLASS OF 75 are the match ball for this afternoon’s game - these are the players who played for the Club in 1975 and were part of the team that reached the semi final of the National Cup Competition – then called the John Player Cup. There will be a dozen of that side meeting once again as they do every year and memories of beating London Irish and Bath and losing to Rosslyn Park in the semi final will once again be recounted by “ the old farts” – it was a different game then…
