  • Annual Report 2016
LANCASHIRE COUNTY RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 THE SECRETARY’S OPENING REMARKS As ever my first task in my report is to thank the outgoing president, Tom Fitzgerald. I have worked closely with Tom for many years and have only the highest respect for him and the professionalism he conducts County business with. Tom has been the cornerstone of the day to day running of rugby in this County and has been instrumental in the formulation of new initiatives that have put us in a position where a lot of our work is seen as best practice. These include our Academy, Coach mentoring schemes and training conferences. With his close contacts and networks he has managed to secure some great players and leaders to deliver these schemes. Having spoken to Tom I know how much over and above his regular volunteering work the office of President involves, with over 150 club visits and official engagements with many thousands of miles covered. Tom is greatly supported by his wife Angela, both of whom I consider tireless supporters of this County and I am extremely pleased to class them as the closest of personal friends. To Rugby matters, Our Senior XV have reached the final and other reports in this booklet will cover how they got there, at the time of printing we are in the run up to the final at Twickenham against Cornwall whom we expect to be strong with very vocal support. Thanks to Mark Nelson, Steve Rigby, John Greenwood and all the backroom team, along with players who give up their time at the end of very busy seasons to support senior Rugby in Lancashire.

I have visited approximately half the Clubs in Cheshire and hope during my second year to have visited the vast majority of our member clubs. I have been to clubs who are playing in the National Leagues and the next visit has been to a club struggling to put out one team at the lowest league level. The striking feature of all clubs is the hard work and dedication of the volunteers many of them past players of advancing years who, week after week, in all weathers turn up to do their regular tasks and support their team.

As I continue as President of Cheshire RFU for a second term, I offer my sincere thanks to the clubs I visited last season for their hospitality and the opportunity to meet with key mem- bers of the clubs. For this 2019 - 2020 season I will endeavour to continue visiting the Cheshire clubs I was unable to visit last season. As we go into the new season the Financial Squeeze on the RFU continues with both direct and indirect impact on clubs and constituent bodies. Without question this coupled with other on/off the field issues will seriously question the viability of certain clubs. However, my visits to Cheshire clubs ranging from National 1 down through to the Halbro leagues showed clearly in most cases Cheshire clubs are in good health, as is the Cheshire Executive committee.

Ltd will be held at Chester R.U.F.C Hare Lane, Vicars Cross, Chester On 6th June 2019 at 6.30pm. Cheshire Rugby Football Union Ltd. Incorporated under the Industrial & Provident Societies Act 1965 No 28989R 3 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT . It is many years ago, more than I care to remember, when I pulled on the under 15 Cheshire school’s shirt, which was to be the beginning of my Cheshire journey; to be asked to be President of Cheshire RFU is the pin- nacle of this journey and I am truly honoured to accept. Having refreshed my memory on the long history of past Cheshire Presidents it has focused my mind on the task in front of me for which I will endeavour to meet the high standards my predecessors have set. My playing days in addition to my under 15 Cheshire caps included under 18 Cheshire schools and seven seasons playing for the Cheshire senior side.
