MINUTES OF THE SISTER CITIES COMMISSION August 8, 2018 The members of the Sister Cities Commission met for their regular meeting on Wednesday, 8 August, 2018, at 1:00 pm at Danville City Hall. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Milton Reigelman and, upon roll call, the following members were documented as either present or absent: PRESENT ABSENT Milton Reigelman, Chair Nick Wade Russ Goodwin Gail Louis Mary Beth Touchstone Liz Orndorff Laura Jack Ray Hammond Georgia de Araujo Jane Dewey Mary Jo Bowling Brandon Long Guests: Jason R. Swanson Assistance Professor from the University of Kentucky and Arianna Gorton. The meeting was called to order and the Chair noted a lack of quorum. No official Financial Report was presented. The Chair noted that funds available are in the neighborhood of $7,000.00 with no current expenses outstanding. The fundraiser brought in over $5,000.00. Jason Swanson, as assistant professor in the College of Agriculture at UK teaches Hospitality and Tourism. He recently completed a 6 part series, Transformative Tourism, affects of travel on the traveler. His program details the impact of travel experiences of 10 college students as they tour Western Kentucky. The KET series will air in October 2018. A new program is currently in development using the same concept except, this time the location will be in Europe. Swanson would like to include a travel segment in Northern Ireland, specifically East and Mid Antrim. Milton will write letters of introduction for Swanson to David Hilditch, MLA at Northern Ireland Assembly; Audrey Wales, Councillor and former Mayor; Ian Eagleson, Head of Strategic Finance; and Billy Ashe, Councillor and former Mayor. Funding sources are being explores as well as possibly partnering with Centre College is some manner. Sister Cities Commission is considering sponsoring a segment of the program. The incoming Artist Exchange from Carrickfergus-Mid and East Antrim is Dee Craig. His anticipated arrival date is September 30, 2018 for a duration of three weeks. A current housing location is being sought. Arianna Gorton will provide publicity and press releases. Jane Dewey will coordinate with other schools in the area to arrange participation in the mural project. Gail Louis will act as social hostess for Dee Craig. Mary Beth Touchstone and Milton Reigleman have appeared before the Architectural Review Board and have received approval for the mural location at Elmwood Inn Fine Teas building at 135 N 2nd Street. Mary Beth shared an image of the proposed mural to be presented to the ARB for approval. Bruce and Shelley Richardson will host the Business After Hours on October 18th to coincide with the ribbon cutting on the mural. Nick Wade and Laura Jack will work on a possible Main Street Live! Event at the same time. Mary Beth Touchstone attended the Sister Cities International Annual Conference Aurora, Colorado held August 2-5, 2018. She brought back extensive notes from the meetings as well as suggestions on expanding exchanges. Sisters Cities of Kentucky will be meeting in Danville on November 2, 2018 at the Board Room at the Norton Center. A tour of Stephen Powell’s glass blowing studio on Stanford Avenue is under consideration. Our next meeting will be at our regular time and place on the second Wednesday of the month: September 12, 2018.
