  • Names and Faces
Names and Faces Tamara L. Berg, Alexander C. Berg, Jaety Edwards, Michael Maire, Ryan White, Yee-Whye Teh, Erik Learned-Miller, D.A. Forsyth University of California, Berkeley Department of Computer Science Berkeley, CA 94720 Abstract We show that a large and realistic face dataset can be built from news photographs and their associated captions. Our automatically constructed face dataset consists of 30,281 face im- ages, obtained by applying a face finder to approximately half a million captioned news images and labeled using image information from the photographs and word information extracted from the corresponding caption. This dataset is more realistic than usual face recognition datasets, because it contains faces captured “in the wild” in a variety of config- urations with respect to the camera, taking a variety of expressions, and under illumination of widely varying color. Faces are extracted from the images and names with context are extracted from the associated caption. Our system uses a clustering procedure to find the correspondence between faces and associated names in news picture-caption pairs. The context in which a name appears in a caption provides powerful cues as to whether it is depicted in the associated image. By incorporating simple natural language techniques, we are able to improve our name assignment significantly. We use two models of word context, a Naive Bayes model and a Maximum Entropy model. Once our procedure is complete, we have an accurately labeled set of faces, an appearance model for each indi- vidual depicted, and a natural language model that can produce accurate results on captions in isolation.

  • Optimal Solutions to Tennis Scoring Systems, Challenge System, Court Surface Allocation and Olympic Games Format
Optimal Solutions to Tennis Scoring Systems, Challenge System, Court Surface Allocation and Olympic Games Format By Tristan Barnett Scoring Systems The fundamental problem with current scoring systems is the deuce game is very “inefficient”. Some games can last for 25 minutes. The 50-40 game where the server has to win 4 points and the receiver has to win 3 points is very “efficient”. At most only 6 points are played in such a game. The number of games played in a set are significantly reduced since there are more breaks of serve. Hence, with the 50-40 game, a ‘long’ advantage final set is highly unlikely. The author has listed all the current scoring systems in table 1 and proposed scoring systems in the second table 2. The author thinks it makes sense to have just the one game structure and the 50-40 game due to its simplicity I feel is best to achieve this goal. All the early sets are tiebreak with a first-to-7 point tiebreak game at 6 games-all. The final set is advantage with a first-to-7 point tiebreak game at 12 games-all. Playing a final advantage set makes sense to keep with tradition. Matches are either 3 or 5 sets. This simplifies the scoring systems to 2. The author published a paper: Barnett T (2012). Analyzing tennis scoring systems: from the origins to today. Journal of Medicine and Science in Tennis 17(2), 68-77. http://strategicgames.com.au/article32.pdf which demonstrates why the deuce game came about and why the 50-40 game could potentially replace it.

No. 7 seed Feliciano Lopez and Joao Sousa meet after each man recently reached a final – the Spaniard at Kuala Lumpur (l. to Ferrer) and the Portuguese at St. Petersburg (l. to Raonic). The only other first-round match is No. 6 seed Marin Cilic against qualifier Donald Young, a meeting between the Top 2 juniors in the world 10 years ago. Young edged Cilic as the 2005 year-end junior No. 1, but the Croat has been the more successful pro, highlighted by his run to the 2014 US Open title. A pair of Japanese players round out the Center Court schedule in search of a quarter-final berth. No. 2 seed Kei Nishikori, a two-time Tokyo champion, faces a tall task in Sam Querrey. The 6-foot-6 American is 3-3 lifetime against Nishikori and has won a set in all six of their prior meetings. The final match of the day pits top seed Stan Wawrinka against Japanese wild card Tatsuma Ito, who defeated the Swiss star last year in Tokyo for the biggest win of his career.

  • POINTS to PONDER by Torsten Berg Chair - BWF Referee Assessment Panel
TALES COC THE NEWSLETTER OF BWF TECHNICAL OFFICIALS OCTOBER 2018 EDITION NO. 21 POINTS TO PONDER By Torsten Berg Chair - BWF Referee Assessment Panel The Women’s Singles final of the 2018 US Open Tennis Championships between Serena Williams (USA) and Naomi Osaka (Japan) hit more headlines worldwide than expected due to an incident between the umpire and Williams. From a Technical Official’s point of view it might be interesting to analyse how tennis, a racket sport somewhat similar to badminton, dealt with an incident that is a possibility in our sport. Is an exchange of ideas possible? In brief, the home darling Serena Williams played not quite up to standard and lost the first set to the young Japanese underdog. Struggling to come back early in the second set, Williams’ coach gave her advice from the stands, which is not allowed in tennis at this level of tournament, and the player got a warning. Williams got upset, claiming that she had not heard him and that she never cheated. Soon after, she smashed her racket into the ground in frustration, earning her a lost point for racket abuse. Called to the chair, Williams, in a lengthy discussion, lost her temper and called the umpire a thief, among other abuse, and the umpire punished her again, now by a lost game for verbal abuse, in accordance with the regulations. Only then did the Tournament Referee come to the court. However, the decisions of the umpire were upheld. Soon after, Osaka won the match. Subsequently, Williams was fined US $ 17,000 for the offence -- a large sum per se, but a minor sum compared to the prize money.
