No. 7 seed Feliciano Lopez and Joao Sousa meet after each man recently reached a final – the Spaniard at Kuala Lumpur (l. to Ferrer) and the Portuguese at St. Petersburg (l. to Raonic). The only other first-round match is No. 6 seed Marin Cilic against qualifier Donald Young, a meeting between the Top 2 juniors in the world 10 years ago. Young edged Cilic as the 2005 year-end junior No. 1, but the Croat has been the more successful pro, highlighted by his run to the 2014 US Open title. A pair of Japanese players round out the Center Court schedule in search of a quarter-final berth. No. 2 seed Kei Nishikori, a two-time Tokyo champion, faces a tall task in Sam Querrey. The 6-foot-6 American is 3-3 lifetime against Nishikori and has won a set in all six of their prior meetings. The final match of the day pits top seed Stan Wawrinka against Japanese wild card Tatsuma Ito, who defeated the Swiss star last year in Tokyo for the biggest win of his career. EMIRATES ATP RACE TO LONDON UPDATE: Of the Top 20 players in the Emirates ATP Race to London, 18 are competing this week at ATP World Tour 500 events in Tokyo or Beijing. The Top 8 players in the race on Nov. 9 will qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals Nov. 15-22. Four men have already secured their spots: Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. With first-round losses this week by No. 9 Richard Gasquet, No. 10 Kevin Anderson and No. 12 Milos Raonic, it is possible for No. 11 John Isner, No. 13 Marin Cilic and No. 14 Gilles Simon to take over as No. 9 in the race standings. Isner can pass Gasquet by reaching the Beijing final, while Cilic and Simon can do so by winning the Tokyo title.     GAME, SET, WATCHED: GOVERNANCE, SOCIAL CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE IN PROFESSIONAL TENNIS By Marie-Pier Guay A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November, 2013 Copyright © Marie-Pier Guay, 2013 Abstract Contrary to many major sporting leagues such as the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB, or the Olympic Games as a whole, the professional tennis industry has not been individually scrutinized in terms of governance, social control, and surveillance practices. This thesis presents an in-depth account of the major governing bodies of the professional tennis circuit with the aim of examining how they govern, control, constrain, and practice surveillance on tennis athletes and their bodies. Foucault’s major theoretical concepts of disciplinary power, governmentality, and bio-power are found relevant today and can be enhanced by Rose’s ethico-politics model and Haggerty and Ericson’s surveillant assemblage. However, it is also shown how Foucault, Rose, and Haggerty and Ericson’s different accounts of “modes of governing” perpetuate sociological predicaments of professional tennis players within late capitalism. These modes of surveillance are founded on a meritocracy based on the ATP and WTA rankings systems. A player’s ranking affects how he or she is governed, surveilled, controlled, and even punished. Despite ostensibly promoting tennis athletes’ health protection and wellbeing, the systems of surveillance, governance, and control rely on a biased and capitalistically-driven meritocracy that actually jeopardizes athletes’ health and contributes to social class divisions, socio- economic inequalities, gender discrimination, and media pressure.

Forsyth University of California, Berkeley Department of Computer Science Berkeley, CA 94720 Abstract We show that a large and realistic face dataset can be built from news photographs and their associated captions. Our automatically constructed face dataset consists of 30,281 face im- ages, obtained by applying a face finder to approximately half a million captioned news images and labeled using image information from the photographs and word information extracted from the corresponding caption. This dataset is more realistic than usual face recognition datasets, because it contains faces captured “in the wild” in a variety of config- urations with respect to the camera, taking a variety of expressions, and under illumination of widely varying color. Faces are extracted from the images and names with context are extracted from the associated caption. Our system uses a clustering procedure to find the correspondence between faces and associated names in news picture-caption pairs. The context in which a name appears in a caption provides powerful cues as to whether it is depicted in the associated image. By incorporating simple natural language techniques, we are able to improve our name assignment significantly. We use two models of word context, a Naive Bayes model and a Maximum Entropy model. Once our procedure is complete, we have an accurately labeled set of faces, an appearance model for each indi- vidual depicted, and a natural language model that can produce accurate results on captions in isolation.
