This new monthly journal addresses development and environmental issues unique to the mountain environment of South-Central Asia. It is intended to fill the gap left by "an excess of commentary and not enough reportage in the region." Its editor and publisher, Kanak Mani Dixit, has recently produced a "prototype" issue to serve as a vehicle for generating reader interest and funding necessary for its development. This issue includes reports on the serious problem of pollution in the Kathmandu valley, controversial hydro-electric project Tehri Garwal, the endangered Tibetan wildlife, the evolving role of ICIMOD (International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development), and infant mortality in Nepal. It also includes reviews, abstracts, and news briefs on the region and carries advertising. For further information and prototype issue, address inquiries to HIMAL, P.O. Box 42, Lalitpur, Nepal..
