Khutulun deserves her own place in history However, even among the standards of all those powerful Mongol women, Khutulun writes a distinct place for herself. Born aboutKhutulun, was the great-great granddaughter of Genghis Khan and a legend in her own right. Unlike her cousin, the emperor Kublai Khan, who relished the comfort and luxuries of the Chinese court, Khutulun chose the rough, nomadic lifestyle — the traditional Mongol way of life. Benevolently imaged as beautiful, and much sought after by men, Khutulun was a woman of extraordinary strength. She mastered the Mongol arts of horse-riding, archery, and wrestling where she eventually became the champion wrestler whom no man could defeat. She also transcended at the cardinal Mongol vocation of warfare. However, it is important to note that it was not unusual for Mongolians to see women on horses or dealing with bows and arrows, but what made Khutulun an anomaly was her excellence, the refinement of her skills among many of her likes. Her father, Qaidu Khan, awarded her a gergee a medal of office that stated the power of the holder as an acknowledgement of her power and independence. She is the only woman recorded to have received that, as it was an authority usually The Warriors Princess for men. Khutulun outperformed all her fourteen brothers since a very early age. It was Khutulun who chose to be the military commander instead, perhaps The Warriors Princess avoid her brothers enmity. Qaidu Khan not only trusted Khutulun on the battlefield, but he also relied on her for advice and support regarding The Warriors Princess administration of the government and the Kingdom. Having been largely victorious on the battlefield and in The Warriors Princess, Khutulun refused to marry until a potential suitor defeated her in wrestling. To compete against her, the opponents had to wager The Warriors Princess horses. If they won, they could marry Khutulun, and if they lost, they had to give away the horses. Many men came forward, but none of them could succeed, and in a follow up, Khutulun kept increasing the size of her herd. According to Marco Polo, a particularly handsome and wealthy prince presented The Warriors Princess for the contest. The anonymous bachelor wagered a thousand horses. Anxious for her marriage, her parents insisted Khutulun to let the prince win. For the love of her parents Khutulun agreed, however, in the rush of competitive excitement she forgot her promise and walked from the match, a thousand horses richer. In the face of humiliation, the handsome prince disappeared, leaving behind the additional thousand horses for her herd. Owing to her unusual way of life, gossips and rumors circled Khutulun — not only from the political and military enemies who could not defeat her, but also the historians and messengers of her time. They alleged that she maintained an incestuous relationship with her father, and therefore would take no man as her husband. To this day, it is unclear and highly debatable as to whom she married, but one thing that remains constant was that she remained undefeated as a wrestler. Liked this post? The show is a spin-off of the television series : The Legendary Journeys ; [4] the saga began with three episodes in Hercules where Xena was a recurring character originally scheduled to die in her third appearance. Aware that the character of Xena had become very successful The Warriors Princess the public, the producers of the series decided to launch a spin-off series based on her adventures. Xena became a successful show which has aired in more than countries around the world since The series soared past its predecessor in ratings and in popularity. For all six years, Xena remained in the The Warriors Princess five. In AugustNBC announced The Warriors Princess it had cancelled its plans for the reboot for the foreseeable future. Xena: Warrior Princess is set primarily in a fantasy version of ancient Greece sometimes alluding to Roman Greece and was filmed in New Zealand. The Ancient Greece depicted in the show is largely derived from historical locations and customs, modifying known places and events — battles, trading routes, towns, and so on — to generate an attractive fictional world. The Warriors Princess settlements are presented as a mixture of walled villages and rural hamlets set in a lush green, mountainous landscape. They are often seen under attack from warlords, and travelling between them involves frequent encounters with small bands of outlaws. All of the main towns are named after historic towns of Ancient Greece, and exhibit some of their essential characteristics — Amphipolis birthplace of Xena [16]Potidaea birthplace of Gabrielle [17]Athens birthplace of Joxer [18]CorinthDelphiand Cirra birthplace of Callisto The Warriors Princess which was burnt to the ground by Xena's army. As the show progressed, however, events took place throughout more modern times and places, from Cleopatra 's Alexandria to Julius Caesar 's Rome. The mythology of the show transitioned from that of the Olympian Gods to include Judeo-Christian elements. Eastern religions were touched on as well, with little regard to accurate time-and-place concerns. One episode, "The Way", which loosely interpreted elements of Hinduism as major plot points, generated controversy, requiring the producers to add a disclaimer at the head of the episode and a tag explaining the episode's intentions at its end. Mythological and supernatural locations are presented as equally real, The Warriors Princess places, often accessed through physical portals hidden in the landscape such as lakes and caves. The inhabitants of such places — gods, mythological beings and forces — are for the most part manifested as human characters who can move at will between their domains and the real world. Aresthe Greek God of War, for The Warriors Princess, is an egotistical man who wears studded black leather, and AphroditeGoddess of Love, is a The Warriors Princess valley girl who uses typical valley girl slang and dresses in flowing, translucent pink gowns. Xena is a historical fantasy set primarily in ancient Greecealthough the setting is flexible in both time and location and occasionally features Egyptian[21] IndianChineseCentral Asian[22] and Medieval European [ citation needed ] elements. The flexible fantasy framework of the show accommodates a considerable range of theatrical styles, from high melodrama to slapstick comedy, from whimsical and musical [23] to all-out action and adventure. While the show is typically set in ancient times, its themes are essentially modern and it The Warriors Princess the ideas The Warriors Princess taking responsibility for past The Warriors Princess, the value of human life, personal liberty and sacrifice, and friendship. The show often addresses ethical dilemmas, such as the morality of pacifism ; however, the storylines rarely seek to provide unequivocal solutions. Xena freely borrows names and themes from various mythologies around the world, primarily the Greekanachronistically adapting them to suit the demands of the storyline. Historical figures and events from a number of The Warriors Princess historical eras and myths make numerous appearances, and the main characters are often credited with resolving important historical situations. These include an encounter with Homer before he was famous, in which Gabrielle encourages his storytelling aspirations; [24] the fall of Troy ; [25] and the capture of Caesar by pirates, with Xena cast as the pirate leader. Competing religions are treated as compatible and co-existent in a henotheistic world, allowing the Greek Pantheon to live side by side with the Norse GodsIndian DeitiesThe Warriors Princess "God of Love" and others. Each god, or The Warriors Princess of gods, The Warriors Princess a different part of the world, and in the show survives only while people believe in it. In seasons four and five, the Greek people gradually transfer their faith from the Greek Gods to the "God of Love" over a period of about 25 years, and as their power fades, the Greek Gods are almost all killed off in a The Warriors Princess battle. This quirky mix of timelines and the amalgamation of historical and mythological elements fueled the rise of the show to cult status during the s and early s. It was one of the first shows to tap into its Internet following, allowing fans from all over the world to discuss and suggest things related to the show. The Xena fandom is still an active community today. The first choice for Xena was the British actress Vanessa Angel[26] but an illness prevented her from travelling, and the role was offered to four other actresses before the relatively unknown Lawless. Sunny Doench was cast as Gabrielle, but she did not want to leave her boyfriend in the United States, so O'Connor, The Warriors Princess had appeared in Hercules in another role, was chosen. The show features a wide assortment of recurring characters, many of them portrayed by New Zealand actors. Ted Raimi became a core member of the cast from the second season as Joxer. Marton Csokas portrayed both Borias and Krafstar. Composer Joseph LoDuca wrote the theme music and incidental music The Warriors Princess, and co-wrote the lyrics for the songs in " The Bitter Suite. The original "Kaval sviri" can be heard where Xena races into battle in the Hercules episode " Unchained Heart. Most of the series' music was made available on six soundtrack albums. The series follows Xena and her traveling companion Gabrielle. Xena is on a quest to redeem herself for her dark past by using her formidable fighting skills to help people. In Herculesduring her two first episodes, Xena was a villain and a powerful warlord, but in her third appearance she joins Hercules to defeat the warlord Darphus, who had taken her army. During her own series, Xena spends almost every episode on a different mission, always trying to do the right thing, fighting for what she refers to as the "greater good". Gabrielle is Xena's best friend, soulmate and also her greatest ally. She is introduced in the first episode, first as a big fan of Xena and her history, [30] but soon becomes a notable character in The Warriors Princess own right. As the show progresses she undergoes significant changes in costume and style, evolving from a simple farm girl to a talented bardand eventually to a formidable warrior. She is initiated The Warriors Princess a tribe of Amazons[31] learns to fight with a staffand is trained by Xena. In the first season, Xena and Gabrielle meet Joxer The Warriors Princess, [19] a comic man who styles himself "Joxer the Magnificent", and later "Joxer the Mighty. The Warriors Princess, he becomes a close friend to Xena and Gabrielle. When Callisto was a child, her home village of Cirra was burned nearly to the ground by Xena, killing her family. She displays The Warriors Princess bizarre brand of sadisticgleeful, shrieking cruelty towards Xena and her associates. Hercules himself reappears alongside Iolaus - who becomes interested in Gabrielle - when Xena seeks to The Warriors Princess Prometheus from Hera. Ares - suave, charming, witty, yet ruthless and amoral - often represents, especially in the early seasons, the seductive power of war and the dark side. He repeatedly attempts to lure Xena away from her quest for redemption, and tries to win her over as his Warrior Queen. Much of his relationship with Xena remains ambiguousincluding The Warriors Princess he is at least partly redeemed by his love for Xena, and to what extent Xena reciprocates his feelings. He says several times that he "has a thing" for Xena, and he pursues her sexually and romantically. This seems to prevent him killing her, even when The Warriors Princess against her in deadly combat. The Warriors Princess major antagonists of the show include Caesar and Altia Roman official and shamaness respectively. Caesar's first appearance was in the second-season episode "Destiny. When threatened by Xena he tells her " I know what I'm fated to do with my life. This ultimately leads to her capture and crucifixion at his hands, [38] and he orders his men to break her legs - an extremely painful memory which is often revisited during the series. Caesar's betrayal fills her with rage, and is the catalyst for her transition The Warriors Princess pirate to warlord. Alti is an evil shamaness from the Northern Amazon tribes of Siberiawho had been driven out of her tribe because of her hunger for power. She is one of the most influential people encountered by Xena in her dark days, and possesses a wealth of spiritual powers, including travelling to the spiritual realm. Alti is probably best known for her trademark stare, which brings up pain and suffering from the target's life and unleashes the torment once again in the form of both pain and physical symptoms. When she stares at Xena, Xena often feels the pain of her The Warriors Princess being broken, [38] her back being snapped, [39] and a crippling barrage of attacks The Warriors Princess her worst enemies. As Alti grows in power The Warriors Princess the series, she can also conjure up pain and suffering from a person's future, and from their future lives. This power backfires early in Season 4, when she shows Xena a vision from her future, of her and Gabrielle being crucified on Mount Amarro. Over the course of the series, viewers were also introduced to family members of both Xena and Gabrielle, but most notably featured their children. Xena gave her first child, a son named Solan, to a group of centaurs after the death of The Warriors Princess father, Boriaswho was killed in combat against a warrior in Xena's employ. Solan never knew that Xena was his mother, however knowing Xena for a long time. While aiding Xena and Boudica to defend Britannia against CaesarGabrielle The Warriors Princess into contact with an evil cult that tricks her into killing one of its priestesses, Meridian. Being the daughter of Dahak, she quickly developed supernatural powers, and The Warriors Princess within hours of being born, proving to Xena that there was no chance of saving her. Hope aged The Warriors Princess fast, and, mere months after being drifted down a river by her mother, she appeared to be about 9 years old. Despite Gabrielle's hopes that she would "be good", Hope killed Xena's son Solan before being poisoned by Gabrielle herself. During the episode " The Ides of March ", at the end of season 4, Xena and Gabrielle were crucified by the Romans The Warriors Princess, as Caesar is betrayed and killed by Brutus. They are later revived by a mystic named Eli with the spiritual aid of Callisto, who by that time had The Warriors Princess an angel; [44] Callisto also engineers a plan to have Xena conceive a daughter after the resurrection, and this child is prophesied to bring about the Twilight of the Olympian gods; this girl was named Eve. After Eve's cleansing by baptismXena is granted the power to kill gods as long as her daughter lives. In a final confrontation, the Twilight comes to pass when Xena kills most of the gods on Olympus to save her daughter, and is herself saved by Ares when he gives up his immortality to heal the badly injured and dying Eve and Gabrielle. The vast majority of locations in the series are fictional. However, a few locations in the plot are centered on real towns of Ancient Greece, The Warriors Princess. Xena — the main character of the show — was born in the city of Amphipolis in northern Greece. Xena and her comrade in arms, Gabrielle, made frequent The Warriors Princess there over the course of the series and it was referenced often. Xena described Amphipolis as "full of life", although several times it was The Warriors Princess of death: for instance, the city became a breeding ground for demons after Xena and Gabrielle returned from their twenty-five year sleep. Mephistophelesthe King of Hell, had captured the soul The Warriors Princess Xena's mother Cyrene and imprisoned her in hell. In the backstory of the show, ten years ago Xena had set out to become a warrior, to protect Amphipolis from attacks by a warlord called Cortese. This was the journey that turned her into an outstandingly fierce fighter with an evil reputation. When she was inspired to fight for good, she returned to Amphipolis, seeking a reunion with her mother. She met Gabrielle, in Potidaea, on the way. In a fictionalized conversation between Julius Caesar and Xena in The Warriors Princess "Destiny" episode in Season 2Xena tells him Stageira "is the ancient enemy of my home village, Amphipolis. Gabrielle was born in Potidaea in ChalkidikiGreece, which features many times as a rural village, which The Warriors Princess have been portrayed as a rural fishing village. Joxer was brought up in the city of Athenscapital of Greece, and it is often mentioned in passing. Xena and Gabrielle rarely pass through it, but it was the main setting for the clip show "Athens City The Warriors Princess of the Performing Bards", and was nearly visited in "One Against an Army" and "Blind Faith". Callisto is from Cirra in Phociscentral Greece. Xena's army torched the village when Callisto was a child, causing the death of most of her family. The fact is, no matter what the other Amazon reviews will have you believe, this book is not Lady of Hay. However, it is one bloody awesome novel and because of that, does not deserve the comparison. It is true that since House of Echoes, Erskine's work has developed into a historical ghost story of sorts. However, this was a historical paranormal with substance. Sink your teeth into Rome during the time of the Emporer Nero, w I've approached writing my first Barbara Erskine review with caution. Sink your teeth into Rome during the time of the Emporer Nero, when Christians were murdered for their The Warriors Princess belief in one God. Climb down into the pit with the terrified and defenseless and experience the horror of the Gladiator arena, discover the Emporer's motivation for his grissly 'Roman Candles' and the persecution of St Peter. But most of all, take the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of Eigon, a captive Celtic Princess and Erskine's historical central character. She is flawed and damaged but within an inspiring inner-strength. She is a perfect match for the modern-day central character, Jess. Actually, Jess is the reason I believe The Warriors Princess many reviewers have compared this The Warriors Princess to Lady The Warriors Princess Hay. Erskine did a fantastic job of writing a modern-day storyline that was as interesting as her historical one. She pulled off a perfect marriage of plot- lines. If she was writing in the present she'd end on a cliff-hanger and flip to the past and vice versa. Very clever, very effective and very Erskine. She writes about women who The Warriors Princess on a turbulent inner-journey. She writes about people whose emotions are so powerful and experiences are so traumatic they reach forward from the past and infiltrate our lives in the present. She doesn't just write about people, she writes about the invisible threads that connect us all. I love my historicals to explore The Warriors Princess concept of time and destiny and this is due to her. Read this novel if: You don't mind an unusual historical. Think Diana Gabaldon meets a ghost story. Don't read this novel if: Paranormals and ghost stories aren't your thing. This is only mild on the suspense side of things but it is about haunting so The Warriors Princess that in mind. I also probably wouldn't suggest it if you've never read a Barbara Erskine before. Aug 11, Charlotte Bird rated it it was ok. This The Warriors Princess was so disappointing. As I felt with daughters of fire, Erskine is much more effective writing in the medieval period. Whilst I have no doubt she researched this just as thoroughly she doesn't quite The Warriors Princess the same sense of atmosphere that she manages in child of The Warriors Princess Phoenix, lady of hay The Warriors Princess kingdom of shadows. As with those other efforts the 'modern' sections were lack lustre and uninteresting. None of the characters were endearing in any way; most of them were downright irritating. T This book was so disappointing. Titus and dan were completely unconvincing as creeping menaces and the whole idea of psychic mediums talking to each other across the ages was horrendous. I'm increasingly sad that nothing Erskine has done lives up to the awesome first experience that was reading child of the Phoenix. Nov 02, Melanie rated it did not like it. The Warriors Princess really wanted to like this book and get into The Warriors Princess Roman part of it but the start of the book put me off so entirely. I didn't understand why she would get rid of any evidence which would lead to knowing who had raped her. Surely she realised that it would lead to her living in fear? I want a book The Warriors Princess entertain and enlighten me. Usually Erskine manages to do this but on this occassion I wish I hadn't bought the book. Much better than her last offering Daughters of Fire. However, I did at times want to throttle the heroine for being a drip and constantly ignoring the advice of her friends. Also this book was about pages too long, and I ended up speed-reading the last third of the book. View 1 comment. Oct 14, Sheree rated it really liked it Shelves: historical-fictionreviewsownread-in Another suspenseful plotline with more than a touch of the supernatural. I would have given this novel 5 stars but for the similarity in story line to all Barbara Erskine's books. As The Warriors Princess stand alone novel, this is definitely a winner but when read after all Erskine's novels there The Warriors Princess an element of 'sameness' which diminishes the surprise component. Apr 24, Liz rated it it was ok. This story revolves around Jess, a woman who is attacked and seeks The Warriors Princess in the Welsh hills. While there, Jess makes a spiritual connection of sorts with a Celtic princess, Eigon, who lived almost years ago, and becomes obsessed with finding out what happens to her enough to trace her footsteps to Rome. The book switches between the present day and what happened to Eigon, the Celtic princess, who was captured and taken to Rome. I enjoyed this book for about the first pages or so, but i This story revolves around Jess, a woman who is attacked and seeks solace in the Welsh hills. I enjoyed this book for about the first pages or so, The Warriors Princess it began to grate on me soon after that. Jess constantly puts herself The Warriors Princess danger as a result of her obsession with Eigon, which usually results in her being rescued by others, mostly attractive men. The sections in the book which are written about Eigon and her time are interesting enough to hold my attention - however, the sections about Jess become all too repetitive for my liking. For example - what's happening to Jess? Where is her attacker? Let's consult cards for about the The Warriors Princess time in a hour period! This book lost me, i made myself read it but i didn't pay attention to the plot anymore and jumped lines, because it was just not worth it for me. To me, the plot was a total mess, i hated the idea that Jess could see Eigon's life at all times, zoning out for it, without any real cause to this. I did want to know about Eigon and her story, but it didn't need to be this meta way for Jess, it was frustrating, especially with a man going after her and she refusing to The Warriors Princess herself 'oh but i reall The Warriors Princess book lost me, i made myself read it but i didn't pay attention to the plot anymore and jumped lines, because it was just not worth it The Warriors Princess me.
