(For project preparatory technical assistance: All the views expressed herein may not be incorporated into the proposed project’s design. Figure 8-16 Warehouse Logistics Process Three main flows can be identified: • Incoming flow: products or goods discharged from a truck or unloaded from a container. • Warehousing cargo flow: storage of the palletised goods within the warehouse and – if applicable – registration/follow-up of additional value added activities like re-packing, labelling, price-marking, etc. • Outgoing flow: products or goods leaving the warehouse via truck or loaded into a container. The use of pallets is one of the basic and most fundamental requirements of modern warehousing activities and operations. All incoming cargo or products that are not yet palletised need to be stacked on (standardised) pallets during or directly after unloading a truck or un-stuffing a container. A dedicated follow-up of pallet stock management is of paramount importance to carry on the logistics activities. After palletising the goods, the content of each pallet needs to be inventoried and this data needs to flow into the warehouse management system.

  • Galle Face Green
Galle Face Green Laid out in 1857 by the British governor Sir Henry Ward, Galle Face Green is a park separating the hectic life of Colombo and the Indian Ocean. The green is the city's largest open space and a popular spot during sunset, when hundreds of Sri Lankans come to fly kites, play cricket and eat ice cream. We walked along the green one evening, just as the sun was tucking itself behind the clouds over the ocean. One of the great things about Sri Lanka's being so close to the equator is that the sun rises and sets around the same time all year round. So regardless of when you're visiting Colombo, make sure to head to Galle Face Green at around 6:30pm. If you get lucky, you'll enjoy a spectacular sunset and marvel as the city turns a strange, deep shade of crimson. At the end of the green is the historic Galle Face Hotel, a beautiful lodging which retains much of its colonial charm. The hotel's best feature is its veranda, with chairs and tables facing out to sea. Unsurprisingly, it's one of the city's most popular spots for an evening drink. We sat down and, after sending the waiter to fetch a couple Three Coins lagers, felt as though we'd fallen back through time. So this is how the British lords of colonial Ceylon lived. Not bad. The breeze coming off the ocean was wonderful, the beers cold and delicious, the view unbeatable, the service spectacular, and the other patrons well-dressed and in pleasant moods.

  • Towards Place-Sensitive Urban Interventions: an Examination of the Significant Characteristics of Place in Selected Urban Nodes in Colombo
/2>fr$L - i C\) - 93 Built-Environment-Sri Lanka; Volume 1, Issue 1; December 1998 Towards Place-Sensitive Urban Interventions: An Examination of the Significant Characteristics of Place in Selected Urban Nodes in Colombo Amanda Rajapakse and Ranjith Dayaratne "Place" is a concept that has received recent attention among architects, planners and urban designers. It is seen as a useful concept to examine and to be employed for planned interventions in the built-environment. Place is a spatial entity as well as a social-psychological entity. Its characteristics therefore are intertwined with these aspects. What are the .significant refinements of these characteristics that will elevate the quality of places and transform them to memorable cherished places? This was a research question that prompted an inquiry into the urban spaces whereby an attempt was made to recognize and emphasize the significant characteristics of place that will enable place-sensitive planned interventions in the city. The study based in Colombo examined in detail the characteristics of two selected places that mark them special and significant. The study proposes a theoretical construct of those characteristics that must be enhanced in planned interventions. Introduction A city or an urban millieu is unquestionably a place in which the 'To be human is to live in a world that is architects and the planners act. The urban filled with significant places: to be human is planners and architects are constantly to have and to know your place". grappling with such places and their Martin Heidegger (1960:19) interventions determine the way in which urban places are generated, sustained and Place is a rudimentary concept in experienced.

Travelling inland by rail, a feat of 19th century British imperial railway construction that offers a nostalgia packed train ride from the steamy jungles of the coast to the colonial era hill stations of tea country, we will explore the island’s interior staying in a boutique plantation house of a working tea estate. From an eco-jungle lodge in the wilderness of Gal Oya National Park we will walk with indigenous Vedda people to a forest waterfall for sundowners and take a boat safari in search of swimming elephants. Sitting in God’s Forest stylish Koslanda will be our base for forest treks to find wild coffee, pepper vines and cinnamon and culinary adventures into local cuisine between visiting the largest rock cut Buddha statues on the island and the dizzy heights and spectacular views of Lipton’s Seat. • Military Migrants: British Service Personnel in Ceylon During the Second World War
Britain and the World 6.1 (2013): 5–26 DOI: 10.3366/brw.2013.0075 # Edinburgh University Press www.euppublishing.com/brw Print ISSN: 2043-8567; online ISSN: 2043-8575 Military Migrants: British Service Personnel in Ceylon during the Second World War Ashley Jackson1 Migration caused by conflict is a neglected aspect of the history of the British Empire and the Second World War. Hundreds of thousands of military personnel moved around the Empire and had a significant impact upon the territories in which they were based. In addition, hundreds of thousands of civilians fled war zones, sometimes in an orderly fashion, sometimes in blind panic as the enemy closed in. There were also numerous forced migrations in colonial territories conquered by the Japanese. A unifying study of the range of migrations that took place within the Empire is long overdue. These migrations included civilians fleeing enemy invasion in the East, and military personnel escaping from Greece, Malaya, or Sumatra as the enemy approached or moving in troopships between the various theatres of global operations. Civilian evacuees crossed the Atlantic or left places such as Egypt and Singapore seeking safe haven in Australia and South Africa. Jewish refugees escaping Nazi-dominated Europe managed to reach Palestine, some of them subsequently interned for the duration in Mauritius. The civilian population of Gibraltar was removed from the Rock and accommodated in camps in Britain, Jamaica, Madeira and Morocco. Tens of thousands of American personnel flooded into imperial zones such as West Africa, India, Burma, Iran and Britain’s Caribbean and Pacific colonies.
