The effects of dry-storage on dormancy and germination were studied in seven desert legumes. Mature seeds were collected in summer 2017 and germinated within one week of collection (fresh) and after six months (dry-storage) under two temperature and two light regimes. Seed weight of two species increased 22-55% within 24 hours of water imbibition but others increased ≤ 7%. Germination ranged from 0-32% in fresh and 2-92% in dry-stored seeds, indicating a mix of non- and physically-dormant seeds at maturity. Dry-storage at ambient room temperature was effective at relieving dormancy, though the extent was species-dependent. Germination percentage increased in response to light exposure during incubation, while the effect of temperature was species-dependent. -

In Flora of Arab Republic of Egypt and Syrian Arab Republic: Seed Features and Germination El-Sahhar, K. F., Emara, Kh. S. and Ali, W.A. Department of Agricultural Botany, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt ABSTRACT This paper is the first of a series of studies which aimed at comparing the differences in characters of the same species of some Astragalus plant species, originated from the flora of Egypt and their corresponding species in the flora of Syria, when grown under the Egyptian habitat, to evaluate the effect of variation in origin of species on plant characters. Three species were chosen for this study; namely, Astragalus annularis Forssk., A. boeticus L. and A. hamosus L. The present study dealt with seed morphology, seed surface sculptures by means of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), anatomical characters of seed, physico–mechanical features of seeds, in addition to germination tests. Data of all the above mentioned seed characters were coded and applied in numerical analysis by using a Single Linkage Clustering technique, which represents the similarity or dissimilarity of studied species in a form of dendrogram, which reflected that, A. annularis is the most influenced species by variation of habitat, as Egyptian and Syrian genotypes of it split away in two different clusters of the numerical analysis. However, both genotypes of A. boeticus of different origins, Egypt and Syria, are more close to each other compared with other studied species. -

ABSTRACT The aim of this present research was to explore the floristic analysis and species diversity of the Family Fabaceae depending on species which are represented by voucher specimens and deposited at the National herbarium depending on the data provided from the Flora of Libya series. 7 species Pisum syriacum, Coronilla emerus, Astragalus massiliensis, Vicia sericocarpa, Vicia hirsuta, Retama monosperma, and Sesbania sesban were added as a new record to the family Fabaceae in Libya. Results disclosed that the family Fabaceae in Libya is composed of 198 species belonging to 42 genera. The largest genera in the family Fabaceae in the flora 189 of Libya are Astragalus which includes 26 species, followed by Trifolium with 21 species. -

Sinai, Egypt 2 Department of Botany , Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Giza 12613, Egypt; [email protected] (*corresponding author) Abstract The subdivision of the Leguminosae-Papilionoideae into taxa of lower rank was subject for major discrepancies between traditional classifications while more recent phylogenetic studies provided no decisive answer to this problem. As a contribution towards resolving this situation, 81 morphological characters were recorded comparatively for 226 species and infra-specific taxa belonging to 75 genera representing 21 of the 32 tribes currently recognized in this subfamily. The data matrix was subjected to cluster analysis using the Sørensen distance measure and Ward’s clustering method of the PC-ord version-5 package of programs for Windows. This combination was selected from among the 56 combinations available in this package because it produced the taxonomically most feasible arrangement of the genera and species. The 75 genera are divided into two main groups A and B, whose recognition requires little more than the re-alignment of a few genera to resemble tribes 1-18 (Sophoreae to Hedysareae) and tribes 19-32 (Loteae to Genisteae), respectively, in the currently accepted classification. Only six of the 21 tribes represented by two or more genera seem sufficiently robust as the genera representing each of them hold together in only one of the two major groups A and B. -

Abdulzahra Department of Ecology, College of Science, University of Basra *Department of Biology, College of Science, University of Basra Abstract A total of 127 species belong to 101 genera and 37 families of vascular plants were recognized . Fabaceae (19 spp), Astraceae (18 spp), Poaceae (18 spp), Chenopodaceae (8 pp) and Brassicaceae (7 spp) were the largest families.The annuals ( therophytes ) and the perennial herbs were the most frequent indicating the spring charachteristic physiognomy of the studied area.The plant biodiversity of Chilat in spring based on Shannon Weiner index was 2.07 and Simpson index was 0.194 , but the highest species richness value based on the same indices respectively were 2.15 and 0.16 in station 1. In spring the annual Plantago boisseri has the hightest frequency with a relative abundance 20% and IVI 80.31,while the most dominant perennial species were Pennisetum divisum , Hamada salicornica ,Cornulaca monocantha and Artemsia herba-alba . Based on Sorenson᾽s Coefficient , the similarity between the two stations studied was 0.604 and the Jaccard Coefficient was 0.433. Received 3 July, 2014; Accepted 25 February, 2016 Listing and describing plant diversity in terms of the status of flowering vascular plants in Al-Balqa Governorate (North West Amman/Jordan) has been evaluated. Collections of plant specimens have been made during the field trips that have been conducted, in order to study and evaluate the composition and the diversity of the flowering wild plants in Al-Balqa Governorate. A total number of 527 species belonging to 296 genera and 61 families have been recorded. A number of 91 medicinal plants are recorded; some examples are known as medicinal plants like: Arum palaestinum, Achillea santolina, Carduus australis, and others. Poisonous plants such as Retama raetam, Solanum luteum, Ferula communis etc. were also recorded. A number of 30 recorded species are considered as endemic such as Daucus carota and Apium nodiflorum, and some others are known as edible plant species like: Salvia hierosolymitana, Gundelia tournefortii, Eruca sativa etc. a number of 25 species are endangered such as: Gundelia tournefortii, Sinapis alba, Sternbergia clusiana and Cistus creticus. All the isolated compounds were characterized by using spectroscopic methods especially 1D and 2D NMR and ESI mass spectrometry and comparison with literature data. The chemotaxonomic and systematic characters of the genus Astragalus are summarized in this study to show its interesting chemodiversity throughout the world, as well as to establish the chemotaxonomical classification of this genus. Total seed proteins of 20 Astragalus L. species belonging to 16 sections were electrophoretically analyzed using SDS-PAGE technique. Multivariate analysis (cluster and principal coordinate analysis) of the electrophoretic data showed heterogeneity between some taxa. This heterogeneity was discussed on the light of the controversy over the taxonomic position of Astragalus L. species. The relationships among the examined taxa have been demonstrated as cluster tree using SYSTAT-pc software. This tree illustrated that the studied taxa were separated into two major groups, the New World and the Old World species. The New World group include the species Astragalus wootoni, A. allochrous, A. palmeri, A. layneae, A. lentiginosus, A. nothoxys, A. minthorniae and A. nuttallianu. However, Astragalus coccineus, A. pectinatus and A. didymocarpus that considered from the New World, but separated in the Old World group. Astragalus layneae separated from the rest taxa in the New World group. This species was located in a separate section layneani. (Fabaceae) is one of the largest genera of flowering plants comprising a world total of 2500 species mostly perennial species, grouped in over than 150 sections, from which 2000 are in Old World (Podlech, 1986).
