After a two-month break which culminated in the Men’s EHF EURO 2018, the time has finally come to shift the focus back from the national teams to the continent’s top clubs. There were as many as 140 VELUX EHF Champions League players present in Croatia and no fewer than 13 gold medallists from Spain have returned to their clubs determined to carry on riding the wave of success in the Europe's premium competition. The situation in Groups A and B is wide open and all 16 participants still have a chance to move on to the knockout stage. While the defending champions from Vardar dominate in the competition as the group leaders and also the only remaining team to beat, Paris Saint-Germain sit on top of the other group. However, a pack of fierce rivals are still right behind the leading duo and eye the direct ticket to the quarter-finals reserved only for the group winners. A battle can also be expected in the lower halves of the rankings as all teams will certainly keep on fighting until the dying moments of the games in the last round for their chance to reach the Last 16. Meanwhile, the four most successful teams of Groups C/D are about to compete for the two Last 16 tickets as Motor Zaporozhye take on Skjern Handbold and Ademar Leon face Montpellier in the play-off matches. Handball and the VELUX EHF Champions League have come a long way in the past 25 years and although our product has reached tremendous heights there are always new challenges lying ahead of us as we strive to push the boundaries in our sport even further. As the pace on the road to Cologne and the VELUX EHF FINAL4 on 26/27 May 2018 increases, there is much to look forward to over the coming weeks.
