The first five rounds already proved that we are going to witness an exciting season of top-class handball played between Europe’s elite, while the competition is heading towards another milestone in its history – 10 years of the VELUX EHF FINAL4. We are once again expecting a full-house of almost 20,000 fans in Cologne’s LANXESS arena on 1/2 June 2019 for what promises to be an unforgettable anniversary event. Last season saw Montpellier HB return to the throne in stunning fashion after 15 long years of waiting. Their success underlines the strengths of the competition’s playing format, with just about any team capable of picking up that coveted trophy regardless of which group they play in. But the start of this season also confirmed that to defend the title in this competition is an extremely demanding task. Playing in Group A, the defending champions were without a win in their opening five encounters against opposition that included the eight-time champions from Barça Lassa, the 2017 winners HC Vardar and the 2016 trophy holders PGE Vive Kielce. In Group B, the challenge is no less daunting with two previous winners of the EHF Champions League SG Flensburg-Handewitt and Celje Pivovarna Lasko competing alongside last season’s runners-up HBC Nantes and semi-finalists Paris Saint-Germain Handball as well as the Hungarian champions MOL-PICK Szeged. Paris and Szeged were the only two teams with an untarnished record of five victories ahead of the second part of the group phase. Everything is still wide open in Groups C/D. All 12 teams, including eight national champions, have a good chance of following Montpellier’s example from last season and making it through to the knock-out stages. Bjerringbro-Silkeborg from Denmark and Sporting CP from Portugal lead the way in Group C and Dinamo Bucuresti top the standings in Group D. With TV interest continuing to grow and the addition of two new sponsors Nord Stream 2 as premium sponsor and Betano as regional sponsor, the VELUX EHF Champions League has firmly established itself as one of the leading competitions on the European sports market. After a two-month break which culminated in the Men’s EHF EURO 2018, the time has finally come to shift the focus back from the national teams to the continent’s top clubs. There were as many as 140 VELUX EHF Champions League players present in Croatia and no fewer than 13 gold medallists from Spain have returned to their clubs determined to carry on riding the wave of success in the Europe's premium competition. The situation in Groups A and B is wide open and all 16 participants still have a chance to move on to the knockout stage. While the defending champions from Vardar dominate in the competition as the group leaders and also the only remaining team to beat, Paris Saint-Germain sit on top of the other group. However, a pack of fierce rivals are still right behind the leading duo and eye the direct ticket to the quarter-finals reserved only for the group winners. A battle can also be expected in the lower halves of the rankings as all teams will certainly keep on fighting until the dying moments of the games in the last round for their chance to reach the Last 16.

He said: “Our only way to deal with this kind of circumstance is to refuse to be terrorised and to promote understanding between people and groups, between creeds.” He continued: “It is a privilege and responsibility in sport that people can ‘get together and play ball’ regardless of who and what they are.” Now ahead of the next round of the VELUX EHF Champions League, the EHF and EHF Marketing GmbH are to promote the message that ‘Handball stands together for Paris’ at upcoming matches in the VELUX EHF Champions League. This will include a prominent message on LCD advertising at all matches in the next round starting on Wednesday, 18 November with Rhein- Neckar Löwen versus Montpellier HB and IFK Kristianstad versus MOL-Pick Szeged. On Saturday, 21 November at the ‘Match of the Week’ between Paris Saint-Germain Handball and THW Kiel, to be played in Halle George Carpentier in Paris, there will be special messages in the official magazine as well as on court. Jean Brihault will also attend the match and address handball fans ahead of throw-off. The thoughts of EHF and EHF Marketing GmbH and the whole of the handball community remain with the families and friends of all those who have been killed or injured in these terrorist attacks.
