Ph.D. thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University. Contact: [email protected] THE DAUGHTERS OF HENRY III by Abigail Sophie Armstrong Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2018 ii Abstract This thesis examines Henry III and Eleanor of Provence’s three daughters: Margaret, Beatrice and Katherine. It is a comparative study of their lives and relationships with their parents, arguing that the English king and queen cared greatly for the welfare and prosperity of their daughters from birth. These close family bonds continued after the daughters’ marriages and departures for their husbands’ courts, and both Henry and Eleanor continued to be strong influences in their daughters’ adult lives. This study contributes to the historiography concerning the role of medieval royal daughters. It demonstrates that Margaret and Beatrice were not forgotten about by their natal family following their nuptials but, rather, these relationships continued, and their new marital families were quickly integrated within the larger English royal family.

The Scottish Geneahgisl ^ « ■ -• '37 INDIRECT ENGLISH DESCENDANTS OF MALCOLM III 'CANMORE'KING OF THE SCOTS hy G. M. S. Lander-Frost, F.S.A. Scot Many genealogists and family histoinans will be familiar with the Marquis of Ruvigny's famous scries on the Blood Royal of England, both Plantagenet and Tudor. In those volumes he traces mainly indirect descents, and many of the lines end with quite ordinary people rather than just the aristocracy. He extols such genealogical research as equally as important as direct lines. Many, however, will be unaware that there is a Scottish connection and here we begin that with Malcolm Canmore (1031-1093) who is famous for returning to Scotland from exile in 1056/7 and defeating Macbeth, who murdered his father. King Duncan P' in 1040. Malcolm's first wife was Ingibiorg, daughter of Finn Amesson, Jarl of Holland, and by her he had Duncan 11 King of Scots, bom in 1060 and murdered in 1094. Duncan married in 1090 Ethelreda, daughter of Gospatrick Earl of Northumberland, and their son was William Earl of Moray. Malcolm Canmore married secondly, in 1069. Margaret (later canonised as Saint Margaret) Athcling (1043-1093) daughter of Edward Athcling 'The Exile' (d.l057) Prince of England, by Princess Agatha of Hungary (d. after 1067). Agatha was a daughter of King Stephen (969-1038 and later canonised as a Saint)of the House ofArpad, whose ancestry can be taken back to Atilla the Hun. Malcolm and Sl.Margaret had six children, and here we shall treat with Princess Matilda(1079-1118) who married in 1100, Henry 1" 'Beauclerc' (b.

November 14, 2012 iii Abstract THE ROLE OF RITUAL AND CEREMONIAL IN THE REIGN OF EDWARD I Marla Lynn Morris, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2012 Supervising Professor: Sarah Davis-Secord Often it is said that no one is better at pomp and pageantry than the British monarchy, and indeed, this has been the case at least since the time when medieval kings ruled England. One monarch in particular stands out as having successfully utilized royal ritual and ceremonial to great political, military and personal gain. Edward I is widely considered one of England’s most dynamic, respected and successful monarchs. Called a “precedent seeker,”1 the king’s reign was “. one of the most pivotal in the whole of British history, a moment when the destinies of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland were decided.”2 Edward summoned the biggest armies and convened the largest parliaments seen in England during the entire span of the Middle Ages.

  • A Study of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman Noble Women
DAUGHTERS, WIVES, AND WIDOWS: A STUDY OF ANGLO-SAXON AND ANGLO-NORMAN NOBLE WOMEN Paula J. Bailey, M.S.E. Candidate Mentor: Ann Smith, Ph.D., Professor of History Abstract Traditional medieval histories have tended to downplay the role of noble women in early medieval England. However, increasingly popular gender studies in the last twenty years have prompted a renewed interest by scholars eager to make up for lost time and assign women a more significant role. In light of these efforts, research now indicates Anglo-Saxon women not only had considerable independence regarding land ownership, but they could also dispose of property at will. By contrast, noble women of the Anglo-Norman period appeared, at first glance, not to have fared as well as their Anglo-Saxon predecessors. A closer study, however, reveals that these later women not only held their own honor courts, supervised households and educated their children, but, when the need arose, helped defend their homes. In the military- based society of Anglo-Norman England, noble women were also needed to produce legitimate heirs. Wives, daughters, and widows in the Anglo-Saxon and Norman English world were not on the fringes of society. Introduction Scholars interested in gender studies have made great progress over the last twenty years researching and writing about medieval English women. Traditional histories had, until recently, slighted noble women and their contributions to early Anglo-Saxon society with claims that they played only a nominal role. Historians now conclude that, to the contrary, Anglo-Saxon noble women were relatively independent through their land-holding rights while, by contrast, later Anglo-Norman noble women lost some independence when land ownership became closely associated with the new military-based society that followed the Norman Conquest in 1066.

  • Introduction
Introduction Much is owed to the previous authors, Val Alliez and Carolyn Hammond. We thank them for laying the foundations upon which this new edition has been built. Thanks go, too, to those members of the Richard III Society who responded to the call for suggestions of sites not previously included. Unlike previous editions, the country has been divided into regions, the divisions being taken from the pattern set out by the National Trust. This explains why Hertfordshire is included in the East of England. The web edition has been designed to be a flexible tool which can be updated as necessary. We hope that this guide will enable members and visitors alike to visit and enjoy places that are associated with Richard III and the people he knew. Guidelines This edition of Ricardian Britain was designed for web and Wi-Fi devices such as smart phones or mp3 players with Wi-Fi capabilities. Some of the features include: • Addresses with postcodes, and telephone numbers • Website addresses • e-mail addresses When available, specific postcodes are included to access maps and directions via GPS/SatNav devices. Several organisations have provided APPs. Users are directed to each website for opening hours, entrance fees, and additional information such as photographs, directions, restaurants, accessibility, parking, etc. about the site. Please note that some sites are closed during certain months of the year. Many are open only between Easter and September/October. The visiting of churches and other religious institutions is subject to the timing of services. Some sites may be closed for special events such as weddings, etc.
