We are so honored to have you as a volunteer or a partner agency. It is because of you that good things are happening in the Flint Hills region! We are excited to see many of our volunteers returning after receiving the second COVID vaccination. I know it was a trying year with self-isolation and fear of the unknown. We are working on bringing events back to in-person. I was so sad to cancel our volunteer recognition event last year, but we are planning on it for this August! If you are an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer (all volunteers over the age of 55), you will be Lori Bishop, receiving an invitation sometime in early July. Executive Director We are also working on 9/11 Day of Remembrance events that will take place on September 10th and 11th, as we observe the 20th Anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. If you are a first responder (veteran, police, fire, etc.) please let me know. I would like to utilize our retired first responders in these events as well. We are sad to be saying goodbye to our Volunteer Coordinator, Patty Karr. Patty will be moving back to the Kansas City area. Her last day in the office is May 14th. I am in the middle of "Helping one doing interviews now and hope to have someone in the office beginning May 17th. person might not Karen and I have been going around to give a special treat to change the whole many of our volunteers who are celebrating a 90+ birthday this world, but it year. We need you to update this and return it to us. We are required to keep records updated and we will really appreciate your helping us so that we are in compliance. Happy Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to you all! Lori 2 M a y - J u n e 2 0 2 1 Coordinator Updates It has been over a year since our lives were all shifted from the pandemic and I am beginning to see evidence that we are able to return to a more active community once again. We are finding ways to safely host events, meetings, and volunteer opportunities. Our volunteers are being vaccinated (thanks to the many, many volunteers helping make the clinics a success!) and are returning to their old projects or finding new ways to help the community. The past year has been difficult, but I have had the pleasure of watching our volunteers and community overcome the hurdles and find new ways to help. I look forward to continuing our work, finding ways to help serve our community safely, and volunteering beside you once again. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who have kept in touch- whether while staying home or remaining active. You all bring joy and meaning into the work I get to do each day! Karen Paulus, Program Services Spring has definitely sprung here at Flint Hills Volunteer Center! Even Coordinator with the chilly temperatures and rainy weather, our volunteers have been out in force to serve our community. We have enrolled 105 new volunteers, 14 new groups, and the numbers keep climbing! The month of March was busy beginning with 40 K-State football players on barricade duty and crowd control at the St. Patrick's Day parade. During Spring Break, CSC members created 52 "Stress Less" buckets for the Riley County Health Department and 20 buckets for health care professionals at Lafene Health Center. CSC members also created "Flower Pots of Positivity" and delivered them to those in the community that needed a positive boost in their spirits! Spring is also a time for cleaning up! One group of CSC members went to the Sunset Zoo to clean out their gardens, and another group headed to Sunrise Cemetery to pick up tree debris scattered around the grounds. Upcoming April projects and events include the Aggieville ShowDown weekend, Pink Up the Pace 5K Race, May Day baskets for Meadowlark residents in the Cognitive Care Unit and clean Patty Karr, up projects at Tuttle Creek, Sunset/Sunrise Cemeteries, Stoneybrook Volunteer Retirement Community, and the City Park. Coordinator With so much going on, it is hard to announce that my husband and I have made the decision to move back to Kansas City closer to our children and grandchild. My last day at FHVC is May 14th. I have truly enjoyed my time with the CSC members, Karen and Lori here in the office, and all the directors of agencies I have met along the way. Manhattan is a wonderful community and FHVC helps this city shine! 3 M a y - J u n e 2 0 2 1 Yellow Ribbon Start the Conversation; Save a Life!
