It’s also a sport that Haley took home the conference championship title on floor on March 22. She was requires charisma and finesse. Some are talented beyond expectation and have the named a first team All American on vault and floor, named the 2014 Big 12 Gymnast athletic prowess and character to succeed and carry them through. Just as Kindler predicted, Scaman has come out roaring like a lion. Even crazier, Scaman is a sophomore gymnast who has accomplished more in two years than most Scaman has not hit her ceiling. No one would ever know that she started late, especially as her gymnastics career With all that she has accomplished, it would be easy to get lost in these records and continued. Scaman was sought after heavily for her college gymnastics career, but there was something about OU that made her want to be a Sooner. “I have seen a change in her gymnastics but not in her mindset. She has a job to do, and she goes out and does it and does not think much of it. She is doing what she “My freshman year was just about learning the ropes for me. The individual awards are amazing, but what really matters is As she entered her sophomore year at OU, she thought there was no way for her to that she is able to contribute to the Sooners. create Sooner history. She said her mindset was to put up her best performance, not for herself, but for her team. “I never really thought about making history myself but, rather, as a team. Getting to the end of the season and being National Champions would mean so much more than She held the anchor spot on floor exercise all year, as well as performing at anchor on my individual accomplishments,” Scaman said. vault for multiple meets. Scaman has also been a consistent scorer for the Sooners on bars.

In a meet on Feb. 9, Scaman went out to compete on floor. While it was excellent routine, it was not perfect. It scored her a 9.975. This score catapulted the sophomore to excellence. The following weekend in Fort Worth, at the Metroplex Challenge, she posted a perfect 10.0 on floor. This marked only the second 10.0 on floor in Oklahoma history and the first 10.0 on any event since 2010.

After that meet, coach K.J. Kindler made a bold prediction for Scaman’s future and talked about the character she possess to achieve that success. In true form, Kindler never stopped challenging her gymnasts and talked about what she wanted to see out of Scaman.

“Haley has a lot of charisma. She is pretty cool young lady. I would love for her to have a little bit more attitude, because she is such a humble young lady. I just know that one day she is going to come out roaring like a lion,” Kindler said.

And out like a lion, she came. On March 7 at Lloyd Noble Center, the last home meet of the year, Scaman posted another perfect 10.0 on floor. This marked the first time a Sooner had score multiple perfect 10.0s on floor in program history.

And Scaman was still not done roaring. At the team’s last regular season meet on March 14 in Arkansas, Scaman did the unthinkable: she posted another 10.0 — this time on vault.

This sealed Scaman in the record books. She is the first Sooner in program history to have three 10.0s and the first Oklahoma women’s gymnast to earn a 10.0 in multiple events. Hundreds of aspiring young gymnasts watched Mooring and the No. 1 Sooners place first in the Perfect 10 Challenge, defeating No. 5 Alabama, No. 7 Michigan and West Virginia.

The Sooners finished with 197.2 points at the event, which was held at the Cox Convention Center as part of the Bart and Nadia Sports Experience.

Mooring, a Bixby graduate who competed for Oklahoma City’s Dynamo Gymnastics club team, was once the young girl in the crowd at OU gymnastics meets, idolizing the cast of athletes she would eventually join.

“I know they look up to us and it’s cool to inspire them,” Mooring said. “I know that I was there at some point. My first meet (at OU), I just couldn’t believe I was out there with the people that I watched do it so many times.”

Four years go by quickly. Every meet Mooring suits up for is now one closer to her last for the Sooners. Ask Mooring what stands out the most in that time and she’ll point back to the day coach K.J. Kindler first offered her a scholarship.

“My mom was freaking out,” Mooring said. “It was huge for me and my family to make it here.”

Since then, Mooring has notched two first-team All-American selections and was the national runner-up on the vault as a freshman. Darla Mooring, her mother, hasn’t missed a single home or away meet this season.

Mooring’s leadership this season is an extension of her original passion for the pro- gram. Kindler said that’s evident from every team photo taken, prominently featuring Mooring with her hands in the air and an ear-to-ear smile. “Tons of heart,” Kindler said. “She’s totally involved and engaged with what’s going on.”

Fueled by last year’s team runner-up finish in the national championship and her last go-round in a crimson and cream leotard, Mooring is aiming her personal goals high while keeping a level head.

“We’ll have that edge going into nationals,” Mooring said. “It’s been a good start.”

The Sooners entered the seventh week of the season as the nation’s top-ranked team — right where Kindler wants to be.

“It’s tough to be No. 1,” Kindler said. “You’ve got a target on your back and people are always trying to prove maybe that you’re not there. Our goal has been to win a national championship all year long, so this is a position we want to be in.

“I think we’re surprising some people and hopefully setting the stage for what will happen in April.” MEET 14 - OU AT 2014 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS | APRIL 18-20 23 OKLAHOMA STUDENT-ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: TAYLOR SPEARS Lindsey Morrison, Big 12 Campus Correspondent (Jan. 14, 2014) She has two Big 12 Championship titles, three first place finishes at an NCAA regional, “She taught me how to be confident on beam,” she said. “She works on every little two Super Six appearances, a Big 12 Gymnast of the Year accolade, the Big 12 All- detail and every detail is extremely important especially when competing. But amongst you up in pressure situations even in the gym and it helps you out a lot.” all the awards and achievements, one thing is still missing for Taylor Spears: a team national championship title. Though beam is one of her strongest events, Spears spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons competing in the all-around competition. As a junior, she was the only gymnast in the “I’m really excited about being a senior leader on this team and being a part of more nation to win the all-around title at both a conference and regional championship. OU gymnastics history,” senior Spears said. “The four years I’ve been here, we’ve been working towards that national title and we’ve gotten really close twice. I think this “It’s very unique because very often you’ll find, we don’t have many all-around team can do it.” competitors,” Kindler said. “We use them sparingly because it’s important to make it through the entire season and you have to be smart about the choices you make. Spears hails from Plano, Texas and the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy where Olympic gold medalists like Nastia Liukin and Carly Patterson learned their craft. She “For us to have an all-around competitor that was at that level was huge. I don’t think began gymnastics at age three and knew right away she had a gift. in my 8 years here we’ve had someone that was ranking that high in the all-around. It was huge for her and was an amazing year.” “Gymnastics came really naturally to me when I was young,” she said. “I loved doing it and it’s always been my passion.” Kindler also hopes that Taylor and this year’s team can end the season with a first- place finish at the NCAA Championships. When it came time to figure out her future, Spears knew that collegiate gymnastics was the right path for her. “What I want for Taylor and for our whole senior squad is to have an amazing experi- ence and an amazing year and have the opportunity to win it all,” she said. “If you have “I watched college gymnastics on TV and I saw how much fun it was,” she said. “I that opportunity, all you can do is put your most into it and see what happens. I want wanted to take that path and get my school paid for.” her to have that opportunity.”

Though powerhouse gymnastics schools such as Alabama, Florida and LSU recruited January 10 marked Spears’ last home opener as an OU gymnast. Competing against her, Spears took one visit to Oklahoma and knew it was the place she’d spend the next No. 8 Georgia, the team posted a victory with a history-making season-opener score of four years. 197.700, a score that would have easily won last year’s NCAA Championship.

“It was the first visit and only visit I took,” she said. “I fell in love with it right off the “I’m going to miss the girls, coaches and competing,” she said. “I’m really proud of the bat.” growth of the program and am going to miss being part of this wonderful gym family.”

Since joining the Sooners in 2011, Spears has become someone the entire team looks up to as a leader.

“Taylor is a great leader for the team,” senior Hayden Ward said. “She has a ton of experience and I know everyone on the team looks up to her. We know she’s going to deliver every time she gets out on the floor and we couldn’t ask for more.”

As a freshman, Spears competed on bars, beam and floor, scoring highs of 9.9, 9.9 and 9.875 respectively. Results like these earned her three Big 12 Newcomer of the Week accolades along with an All-Big 12 nod on beam.

Even though she has numerous individual awards, Spears isn’t focused on herself. Instead, she wants the team as a whole to succeed.

“Those are just individual titles,” Spears said. “They’re great, but ultimately it’s a team sport and I want to win a national championship as a team.”

Though the talent and performances come from Spears’ natural ability, her routines come from the mind of Oklahoma Women’s Gymnastics Head Coach, KJ Kindler.

“KJ is an amazing beam coach,” Spears said. “She comes up with strategic and clever assignments.”

Besides teaching her beam skills and routines, Kindler also taught Spears how to embrace her skills.
