No. 3 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, JANUARY 17, 2010 5 2009: THE YEAR IN REVIEW A turbulent year for Ukraine urbulent was the way to describe 2009 for Ukraine, which plunged into financial crisis. No other European country suffered as much as TUkraine, whose currency was devalued by more than 60 percent since its peak of 4.95 hrv per $1 in August 2008. In addition, the country’s industrial production fell by 31 percent in 2009. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko con- fronted the challenge of minimizing the crisis fallout, while at the same time campaigning for the 2010 presi- dential elections. Her critics attacked her for pursuing populist policies, such as increasing wages and hiring more government staff, when the state treasury was broke as early as the spring. Ms. Tymoshenko herself admitted that her gov- ernment would not have been able to make all its pay- ments without the help of three tranches of loans, worth approximately $10.6 billion, provided by the International Monetary Fund. Her critics believe that instead of borrowing money, Ms. Tymoshenko should have been introducing radical reforms to the Ukrainian economy, reducing government waste, eliminating out- dated Soviet-era benefits and trimming the bureaucracy. The year began with what is becoming an annual tra- Offi cial Website of Ukraine’s President dition in Ukraine – a natural gas conflict provoked by the government of Russian Federation Prime Minister President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the heated February 10 meeting of Vladimir Putin. Ключові слова: етнічний, національний, портрет, ідентичність, Львів, модернізм. he ethnic and the nationalist themes were among the most popular Tones in the turn-of-the-century East European art and literature. Polish, Jewish, and Ukrainian artists explored ethnic folklore and ethnic motifs using different genres, styles, and mediums. The representatives of Polish academism such as Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak chose the monumental genre of panorama painting in order to depict the 1794 Kosciuszko rebellion, a key moment in Polish history of national resistance. A secession artists Kajetan Stefanowicz created the “Song of the Legionist” graphic series in the genre of the stylized book-prints [1, 7-13]. Lviv artists of different ethnic and religious background were passionately searching for and developing the specific “national minority” or “ethnic” styles in painting (Olexa Novakivsky), graphics (Efraim Moses Lilien), and architecture (Alfred Zachariewicz) [2]. • The Original Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Its Copies in the Monasteries of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great in Ukraine
SHCSR 66 (2018) 463-490 SISTER NAZARIYA (NATALIYA) MYKHAYLIUK, OSBM THE ORIGINAL ICON OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP AND ITS COPIES IN THE MONASTERIES OF THE SISTERS OF THE ORDER OF SAINT BASIL THE GREAT IN UKRAINE Introduction: This article is dedicated to the artistic analy- sis of the styles, iconographic and color features of the well- known icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which is found in the Church of St. Alphonsus de Liguori in Rome. It reveals new un- derstandings of the iconographic elements and colors of the icon. This analysis of the iconographic elements suggests the time of its creation – the first half of the 15th century, thereby questioning the identity of the iconographer. It is proposed to study five representations of this icon of the end of the 19th cen- tury and the first half of the 20th century which are found in the monasteries of the Order of Sisters of Saint Basil the Great in Ukraine. There are similarities and differences in the artistic vari- ants of these icons compared to the original one. In studying these representations, it was discovered that some are artistic works of known artists. The given material is presented in histori- cal context. Regardless of whether the icon is of the Byzantine tradition of the Cretan school of iconography, it has world-wide esteem among many Christian Churches, leading to the idea that the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is historically recognized as protecting the ecumenical movement, potentially uniting the Christian East and West. Consideration is given to the historical context of the an- cient icon.
