    Hartley Mauditt Hartley Mauditt 1.0 PARISH Worldham, formerly Hartley Mauditt 2.0 HUNDRED Alton 3.0 NGR 474300 136100 4.0 GEOLOGY Upper Greensand 5.0 SITE CONTEXT (Map 2) Hartley Mauditt was formerly the central place of its own parish. It is now classed as a deserted medieval settlement (DMS), the principal earthworks of which can be seen in the fields immediately north-west and south of the surviving parish church. The other principal feature of the settlement is a large spring-fed lake that is situated to the east of the church and is separated from it by a narrow road, the former route to Selborne Priory and onwards to Selborne. The lake supplies a stream that passes through settlement earthworks south of the church. The parish has been absorbed into Worldham CP and West Worldham is 1km north. 6.0 PLAN TYPE & DESCRIPTION (Maps 3, 4 & 5) Church & manor house + associated settlement 6.1 Church & manor house Hartley Mauditt church is the only surviving building of the Medieval settlement. At 148.32 AOD it stands above ground to the west that drops to 134.0 AOD within 0.5km. The former manor house is well documented. Its traditional site is now occupied by a copse within 30m west of the church (Paragraph 11.0 No. 1). A new manor house was built in the early C18. It is thought to have been demolished c. 1798. 6.2.1 Associated settlement The presence of other settlement buildings north, west and south of the church is attested by the numerous earthworks.

See Principles on main webpage. Hills, woodland, views, villages, pubs In Brief This is an unforgettable circular walk between two quiet downland villages. In between them is the escarpment of the South Downs, steep in the north and sloping gently down on the south side. There is a moderate climb at the start but, after that, the gradients are not too taxing. The terrain is mainly woodland but on the way you will be surprised by sudden views. There is an excellent friendly village pub, with good food, in each village. Note that the Unicorn in Heyshott is closed on Monday (for info ring 01730- 813486). The Star and Garter in East Dean has re-opened (as Apr 2019). It's always advisable to check (t heir number is 01243-811318). There are one or two short sections along this walk with nettles or scratchy undergrowth – enough to make shorts uncomfortable. The ground under- foot is generally firm and dry, although possibly in wet conditions the path back to Heyshott at the end might have some muddy patches.

This is at heart a straightforward petition: some may consider it trivial. It concerns a proposal to fell an ash tree. However experience suggests that such proposals can generate strong local feeling as was the case following the delivery of the Court’s judgment in Re St Peter, West Blatchington [2019] ECC Chi 4, which attracted some attention in the local and national press. 2. It appears to be common ground that the churchyard of St Mary’s church, Chithurst was closed by Order in Council on 8 August 1901 and that responsibility for its care and maintenance was subsequently passed by the Parochial Church Council (ecclesiastical) to the Parish Council (civil) pursuant to the statutory forerunner of section 215 of the Local Government Act 1972. I have been provided with a copy of the Order in Council but not of the notice of transfer but there seems to be no dispute as to its existence and effect. 3. The first petitioner has raised a number of matters in his written representations to the Court which have required a lengthier judgment than might otherwise have been the case.
