University of Leicester Department of Media and Communication Research Seminar Series University of Leicester Department of Media and Communication Research Seminar Series 4 December, 400 to 530PM TITLE: The Class Politics of Hyperbole on Geordie Shore ABSTRACT: Geordie Shore has received attention for the shocking antics of its cast members as they party and have casual sex for the MTV reality show. This paper considers the performance of the young working-class participants from Newcastle, a post- industrial northern British city, against the backdrop of high youth unemployment. Whilst their dubious contracts with MTV mean that their income is mostly generated through publicity appearances outside of the show, this paper considers how new labour relations of performance produce exaggeration and hyperbole where claiming visibility is one of the few routes to value. In the show the emphasis upon the labour of self-work in aesthetic beauty styling for both men and women stages a particular working class aesthetic that is present on the streets of most British post-industrial cities. The constant animating and re-animating of their sexual antics considerably outweighs the actual presence of sex on the screen as participants exaggerate encounters to the point of hilarity. The paper argues that these modes of performance are part of the double-coded nature of social abjection, where working-class youth claim some type of ill/legitimate subjectivity via a set of labour relations created by media visibility. • Clemency Newman Looking Into the Popular Reality Show Geordie Shore
From reality television to the hyperreal: How do the pressures of reality shows such as Geordie Shore cause their characters to change their physical appearance? Clemency Newman Abstract Looking into the popular reality show Geordie Shore, I will undertake research to answer why it is that the women who appear on the show change their physical appearance and what connection this has to their celebrity status. I hope to argue that because the women are considered lower class, they have no other power than their perceived attractiveness and are therefore pressured into trying to achieve a hyperreal body, relating to Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation. Introduction Reality television is big business, with over 300 reality format shows on air in the US alone (Washington Post, 2015) from Idol to Big Brother, they rake in millions of viewers every night and have a significant impact on popular culture. These shows present a concentrated, edited and scandalised version of everyday life, wrapped in the guise of being true to the viewer, only more dramatic. Television has the ability to shape our view of the world and now with the ever pervasive aspects of social media, networks such as Bravo can imprint an everlasting impression of what we consider normal. However, even when know what we are watching is completely unreal, we accept it as ‘reality’ and accept the characters into our lives, until they become overthrown by a younger, prettier and more outrageous model. Geordie Shore is one such television show which presents an exaggerated, hyperbolic version of reality, with the cast members performing ridiculous, violent and carnal acts in front of a worldwide audience and being celebrated in the process.

  • The Case of Bigg Market, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Heritage as a Vehicle for Development: The case of Bigg Market, Newcastle upon Tyne Loes Veldpaus and John Pendlebury School of Architecture Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK doi:10.1080/02697459.2019.1637168 Abstract: In this paper we examine the way conservation-planning has changed since the global economic crisis in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), where austerity is still an all- consuming issue. Focusing upon a recent project around the Bigg Market, a historic public space, we map the new ‘conservation-planning assemblage’ where ‘other-than- public' forms of management have taken hold. We identify impacts of austerity, deregulation and a smaller state ideology, and show how the agency of heritage assets and narratives in urban context is focussed on economic performance and competitiveness. Within the conservation-planning assemblage, roles and responsibilities have changed, and we reflect on the impact this has on conservation policy and practice. Keywords: urban governance; heritage; conservation-planning; austerity, Business Improvement District; Newcastle upon Tyne Bigg Market Banter Mentioning to someone in Newcastle that Bigg Market is the case study we are working on is typically met with a smile followed by raised eyebrows, a wink, or a ‘must be interesting field work…’. The Bigg Market in Newcastle upon Tyne (England, UK) connotes the city’s urban nightlife, as a place with undercurrents of violence, associated with a drinking culture, and a classed and gendered sense of place (Nicholls, 2017, p. 125). As the market area of medieval Newcastle, there is a long history to this, but the explicit connotation has been strengthened in recent history.

  • Prof Sarah Edge (Ulster), Dr Helen Jackson (Ulster) & Dr Caroline O’Sullivan (DKIT) - Young People Mental Health and Modern Media
Prof Sarah Edge (Ulster), Dr Helen Jackson (Ulster) & Dr Caroline O’Sullivan (DKIT) - Young People Mental Health and Modern Media Introduction This paper is based on research undertaken by three academics from the discipline of media studies. Media studies is a subject often derided in the popular press as ‘easy’ or non-academic a ‘mickey mouse’ degree. The different research projects presented in this paper aim to challenge this popular understanding by revealing just how important this area of academic study is for our understanding of contemporary society and in particular the health and wellbeing of young people. It does this by identifying the power that mass media representations plays in organising our social and cultural identities. Recognising how, what we might call our perceptions of who we are and who other types of people are, has been formed via our engagement with media messages. The paper does this in order to identify the very real effects and affects this has on how we live our lives in contemporary society. It is clear that contemporary culture is becoming increasingly aware of the power of the media industry and media representations in relation to how we understand others and ourselves. In which the most recent disclosure of the sexual harassment and abuse women face in the film industry (exemplified in the case of Harvey Weinstein and the subsequent #MeToo movement/campaign) has resulted in unprecedented public awareness of the difficulties women face in an industry heavily based on patriarchali ideas of male and female behaviour. The story has propelled into popular culture complex questions about how we view or understand ‘natural’ masculine or feminine behaviour and what is innate and what is learnt?ii Questions, which as this papers reveal have long been the remit of media studies.

Geordie Shore gänget är tillbaka i en ny säsong – deltagarna festar loss i Europa The Geordies are back!
