Ludwig van Beethoven (Born at Bonn, December 16 (?), 1770; died at Vienna, March 26, 1827) Beethoven's opera, "Fidelio, oder die eheliche Liebe," with text adapted freely by Joseph Sonnleithner from the French of Bouilly ("Leonore; ou L'Amour Conjugal/' a "historical fact" in two acts and in prose, music by Gaveaux, Opera-Comique, Paris, February 19, 1798), was first performed at the Theatre an der Wien, Vienna, November 20, 1805, with Anna Pauline Milder, afterwards Mme. Hauptmann, as the heroine. The other parts were taken as follows Don Fernando, Weinkopf ; Don Pizarro, Meier; Florestan, Demmer; Rocco, Rothe; Marzelline (sic), Miss Mtiller; Jacquino, Cache; Wachthauptmann, Meister. "The opera was hastily put upon the stage, and the inadequacy of the singers thus increased by the lack of sufficient rehearsals." Beethoven had received the text in 1804. He worked on the music the following summer at Hetzendorf . On his return to Vienna, rehearsals were begun. In later years Fidelio was one of Anna Milder's great parts : "Judging from the contempo- rary criticism, it was now (1805), somewhat defective, simply from lack of stage experience." In the year that saw the production of "Fidelio," Napoleon's army was hastening toward Vienna. Burk The New Music Director Erich Leinsdorf's career in this country and abroad has included many operatic as well as symphonic engagements. His connection with the Metropolitan Opera began when, at the age of twenty-five, he con- ducted Die Walkure in January, 1938. After the death of Artur Bodanzky in 1939, he became the principal conductor of German opera for four sea- sons. In the spring of 1957 he was appointed Music Consultant and con- ductor at the Metropolitan, and gave up these posts on assuming his Boston engagement. At the Metropolitan Mr. Leinsdorf led new produc- tions of Gluck's Alecstis, Moussorgsky's Boris Godunov, Mozart's he Nozze di Figaro. Last season, he conducted three cycles of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. At the New York City Opera Mr. Leinsdorf conducted the American premieres of The Tempest by Frank Martin, Susannah by Carlisle Floyd, and The Moon by Carl Orff. At the San Francisco Opera he led the first American productions of Walton's Troilus and Cressida and Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites.

    AMICA International Automatic Musical Instrument Collectors' Association Honor Roll Julius Burger From the AMICA, V14, No 6, Aug 1977: Information has been received recently describing in more detail the career of Julius Burger, one of Ampico's celebrated recording artists. His recordings were made inconjunction with Milton Suskind, and together they recorded several fine duets such as-: "Pique Dame" by von Suppe, "Sakuntala Overture" by Goldmark, "Symphony, G Minor" by Mozart, and several others.Mr. Burger was born in Vienna in 1397. A great part of his adult life has been spent with the Metropolitan Opera Company where he served as the assistant conductor. He started at the Met in 1924 when Artur Bodanzky was the chief conductor of the German repertoire. Bodanzky, incidentally, conducted Suskind and Burger when they recorded their four-hand arrangements for the Ampico. From 1927 to 1933 Mr. Burger was engaged in Berlin where he worked with Otto Klemperer. He left Berlin in 1933 and until 1939 was anorchestrator for the British Broadcasting Company in London, after which he emigrated to the United States. He returned to the Metropolitan where he remained until retirement in 1967. He has had the good fortune to coach many famous singers: Lauritz Melchior studied his famous Tristan with Mr. Burger; he toured with the celebrated Schumann-Heink in 1926 and has wonderful memories of these and other great artists. He says he will never forget with what great feeling Madame Schumann-Heink sang the Wiegenlied by Brahms at the time she was 65! Julius Burger still plays the piano quite well, but modestly says he never was a virtuoso.
