Introduction During the academic year 2009/10, 18,755 students in the United Kingdom completed a doctoral degree after either full- or part-time study.1 The vast majority of these doctorates were obtained by young researchers immediately after the completion of a first degree or master’s programme, and were undertaken in many cases as an entry qualification into the academic profession. Indeed, the PhD today is the sine qua non for embarkation upon an academic career, yet within the United Kingdom the degree itself and the concept of professionalized academia are less than a hundred years old. The Doctorate of Philosophy was first awarded in Oxford in 1920, having been established by statute at that university in 1917. -

These items include low cost goods, such as CDs, vinyl records, books and toys, but also TVs, furniture and a large selection of tiles and paint. Any income generated is used to fund further reuse work by the Company and a percentage donated to local charities. This spacious new building is situated alongside the Recycling Centre with its own entrance. There is no need to queue on the road with those wanting to use the Recycling Centre only, nor to adhere to the ODD or EVEN rule; simply inform a staff member at the gate that you want to visit the shop only and he/she will direct you straight there and show you where to park. The shop hours are from 10am to 3pm on Monday to Friday and the telephone number is 0117 304 9590. The shop is well set up to cater for its visitors, with delightful staff, Manager Joanna Dainton, Assistant Callum Stilwell and Volunteer Juliet Le Fevre on hand. -
The Pedagogical Legacy of Johann Nepomuk Hummel
ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE PEDAGOGICAL LEGACY OF JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL. Jarl Olaf Hulbert, Doctor of Philosophy, 2006 Directed By: Professor Shelley G. Davis School of Music, Division of Musicology & Ethnomusicology Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), a student of Mozart and Haydn, and colleague of Beethoven, made a spectacular ascent from child-prodigy to pianist- superstar. A composer with considerable output, he garnered enormous recognition as piano virtuoso and teacher. Acclaimed for his dazzling, beautifully clean, and elegant legato playing, his superb pedagogical skills made him a much sought after and highly paid teacher. This dissertation examines Hummel’s eminent role as piano pedagogue reassessing his legacy. Furthering previous research (e.g. Karl Benyovszky, Marion Barnum, Joel Sachs) with newly consulted archival material, this study focuses on the impact of Hummel on his students. Part One deals with Hummel’s biography and his seminal piano treatise, Ausführliche theoretisch-practische Anweisung zum Piano- Forte-Spiel, vom ersten Elementar-Unterrichte an, bis zur vollkommensten Ausbildung, 1828 (published in German, English, French, and Italian). Part Two discusses Hummel, the pedagogue; the impact on his star-students, notably Adolph Henselt, Ferdinand Hiller, and Sigismond Thalberg; his influence on musicians such as Chopin and Mendelssohn; and the spreading of his method throughout Europe and the US. Part Three deals with the precipitous decline of Hummel’s reputation, particularly after severe attacks by Robert Schumann. His recent resurgence as a musician of note is exemplified in a case study of the changes in the appreciation of the Septet in D Minor, one of Hummel’s most celebrated compositions. -

Officers and Dates for your Diary 1 THE HOPTON ACHIEVEMENT By STEPHEN TUDSBERY-TURNER The magnificent Jacobean armorial achievement that graces the north wall of St Mary Magdalene’s Church in Ditcheat commemorates ‘That worthy GENTLEMAN ROB- ERT HOPTON of Wytham Esqr.- who was the Patron of the Living, and Lord of the Manor of Ditcheat.’ 2 The carving bears the date 1610 and boasts no less than sixteen quarterings, all bearing the armorial devices perti- nent to the Hopton family. The ten quarterings on the spectator’s left hand side of the shield celebrate Hopton’s forbears while the six quarterings on the spectator’s right pay tribute to those of his wife, Jane Kemys. The Hopton family owed its beginning to a Yorkshire knight, Sir Robert Swillington, who died in 1391 and owned estates in both Yorkshire and Suffolk. He was twice married and had a son by both his wives. He also had a mistress, one Joan Hopton, and it was his son Thomas, by this lady, who was the founder of the Hopton dynasty of Ditcheat fame. During the fifteenth and six- teenth centuries the Hoptons based themselves in Suffolk and established themselves as a leading county family as well as playing a significant part on the national stage. -

To rcmedy this lack, an anonymous five-page "History of Schubert Performanccs in America" was published in the Bulletin from National Headquarters Schubert Centennial. /819 Broadway. New York. Schubert Week November 18-25, 1928. lt began thus: The first written record of a Schubert work played in this country goes as far back, as 1835- sevcn ycars after thc Mastcr's death. One of New York's oldcst music publications, The American Musical Joumal. for May 1835 carries the following account. under the heading "Domestic Musical Rcport"- "Mr. Hermann gave a concert at the City Hall Thursday cvcning. April 2, 1835. Beethovcn's overture to Egmont and Weber's overture Der Freischütz were well pcrformed. Messrs. Taylor and Trust played a plcasing fantasía on the harp and flute by Franz Schubert. -

A Musician of Renown The Life and Works of George Frederick Linstead (1908-1974) A Centenary Tribute by Christopher Powell Dr. George Frederick Linstead, BA, DMus, FTCL, FRCO, ARCM (1908 – 1974) 2 © Christopher Powell 2007 3 The Author Christopher Powell studied with George Linstead in the 1960’s whilst a student at Sheffield University. At school he was taught by Brian Manners who had also studied with Linstead in the Department of Music just after the Second World War. Both were also private pupils of George Linstead. On leaving Sheffield, Christopher Powell became a Research Student at Emmanuel College, Cambridge where, as well as undertaking musicological research, he supervised well over a hundred undergraduates in the Music Tripos for various Colleges of the University of Cambridge. In 1973, he moved to Cardiff as Lecturer in Music at the Welsh College of Music and Drama (now the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama). He was on the music staff at RWCMD for the next twenty-five years holding a number of posts including Head of Academic Studies and Associate Director of Music. He retired on his fiftieth birthday and now spends his time between his homes in Cardiff and Nice.
