  • Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S
Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida claims top spot in men’s indoor track: At the end of the two-day gamut of ups and downs that is the Division I NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Champion- ships, Florida coach Mike Holloway had a hard time thinking of anything that went wrong for the Gators. “I don’t know,” Holloway said. “The worst thing that happened to me was that I had a stomachache for a couple of days.” There’s no doubt Holloway left the Randal Tyson Track Center feeling better on Saturday night. That’s because a near-fl awless performance by the top-ranked Gators re- sulted in the school’s fi rst indoor national championship. Florida had come close before, fi nishing second three times in Holloway’s seven previous years as head coach. “It’s been a long journey and I’m just so proud of my staff . I’m so proud of my athletes and everybody associated with the program,” Holloway said. “I’m almost at a loss for words; that’s how happy I am. “It’s just an amazing feeling, an absolutely amazing feeling.” Florida began the day with 20 points, four behind host Arkansas, but had loads of chances to score and didn’t waste time getting started. After No. 2 Oregon took the lead with 33 points behind a world-record performance in the heptathlon from Ashton Eaton and a solid showing in the mile, Florida picked up seven points in the 400-meter dash.

  • The First IAAF World Relays
Fun Times In Nassau 6 — August 2014 Track & Field News It was party central in the stands in the Baha- mas, but all was serious VU[OL[YHJRHZ[OLÄYZ[ World Relays meet was highlighted by multiple World Records by Sieg Lindstrom What if they gave a track meet and everyone in town came? Or at least knew and cared? What, holy-moley, if a sellout broke out? Sounds like the Pre Classic, you might say. Or the Penn Relays, or the London Olympics. It sounds too—”sound,” uproarious, jubi- lant, brassy and infectiously rhythmic, being entirely relevant—like the first IAAF World Relays, which stepped out with inventive spirit in Nassau, the third weekend in May. Three World Records—by Jamaica in the men’s 4 x 200 and a pair by Kenyan squads in the 4 x 1500s—brightened the meet’s two days at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium, but not entirely unexpectedly since the sport of baton passing outside the traditional 4x1/4x4 realms has historically been practiced assiduously only in the USA. Logic more or less orchestrated the records aspect. Did it not seem likely 4 fellows from Eldoret or the Nandi Hills could average sub- 3:39 with a baton—when 9 Kenyans dipped below 3:33.3 last year? Might 4 Jamaicans with a PR average of 19.88 have had a bettor’s bead on the Santa Monica TC’s 20-year-old 4x2 mark? Seemed reasonable—as was the prospect that watching them try would be a ready-made hook for the new show.

  • 100 Marathon Club NA Newsletter
100 marathon club north America Newsletter #30 – May 30, 2013 100 MARATHON CLUB REUNION # 4 There were 48 club members who registered for the 13 th annual Yakima River Canyon Marathon (YRCM) in Central Washington State, and most of them attended the reunion meeting on Friday, April 5, 2013. Everyone was introduced and then received a YRCM mug, pin and name tag. Lois Berkowitz (Riverview, MI) let us know that she will be writing an article for a fall issue of Marathon and Beyond magazine and mentioned that she would be interviewing some club members during the weekend about input for this article. Fenny Roberts (Salem, OR) told about her upcoming trip to Germany where she would be representing our club at member Christian Hottas’ 2,000 th marathon at the May 5 th Hannover Marathon. Club members Roger Biggs and Gina Little from Stevenage and London would be representatives of the 100 Marathon Club United Kingdom. Karla & Ray Jenson from Yakima’s Engravings Unlimited were introduced and presented with a hand- crocheted afghan in appreciation of their support of the YRCM and the 100 Marathon Club. Ray is the person who has made so many pins and personalized medallions for us….quite often on short notice for a recipient’s momentous marathon. Eugene DeFronzo (Chesire, CT) was the recipient of one of these medallions for completing his 500 th marathon on June 9, 2012, at the Hatfield McCoy Marathon in South Williamson, Kentucky. The major health challenges I’ve had in the past few years have left me with much less energy, but it’s our involvement with the 100 Marathon Club and the YRCM that keep Bob and me with lots of good goals.
