It’s the Law: Anyone in the State of Georgia who is planning to dig must call the Georgia Utilities Protection Center (UPC) for a dig ticket and wait two full business days to allow owners of underground utilities to locate their lines.

What is a dig ticket?

During your call, the UPC of Georgia will give you a ticket number. This ticket is the official notification of you request and is called the “dig ticket” or “locate request”. The “dig ticket” is immediately sent to all utility owners in your area.

What type of work requires a dig ticket?

The dig ticket (locate request) in which you call in is intended to prevent any harm to your life and property. Among the work types that we suggest you call in a ticket for include: planting, repairing or replacing underground utilities (specifying which utility) , fences, mailbox, retaining walls, aerating, grading, tilling, using an auger, any mechanized/motorized piece of machinery, etc..

What information do I need before I call?

• Name, area code, phone number, address, city, county and nearest cross streets. • Type of work to be done and how long it will take. • Date and start time digging is scheduled to begin. • If any work will be done within 10 ft. of overhead high voltage power lines. • Contractor/contact person and phone number. • Where on the property you want marking done. • Specific directions to your property – landmarks, etc.

How will the underground lines be marked?

Color coded markings and/or flags will be used to mark the approximate locations of any underground lines. You should not do any digging within two (2) feet on either side of the markings. The color coding for utilities is shown in the chart below.

Pipeline Safety Considerations

When planning landscaping projects, avoid planting large trees or shrubs near you gas meter. As the tree grows, it can interfere with your gas meter or underground gas service line.

Be WATCHFUL

If you notice someone digging in your yard, be sure that they have contacted the Georgia UPC before they started digging. You can help enforce safety laws by shutting down anyone who is not using the One-Call system. For example, if your sprinkler system or pool installer starts digging before you see any paint or flags in your yard, he is probably not complying with the law. By shutting down the excavation work your will be protecting your own property by preventing damage to gas, electric, water, telephone and cable lines.
