  • Introduction Black Miamians Are Experiencing Racial Inequities Including Climate Gentrification, Income Inequality, and Disproportionate Impacts of COVID-19
Introduction Black Miamians are experiencing racial inequities including climate gentrification, income inequality, and disproportionate impacts of COVID-19. Significant gaps in wealth also define the state of racial equity in Miami. Black Miamians have a median wealth of just $3,700 per household compared to $107,000 for white 2 households. These inequities reflect the consistent, patterned effects of structural racism and growing income and wealth inequalities in urban areas. Beyond pointing out the history and impacts of structural racism in Miami, this city profile highlights the efforts of community activists, grassroots organizations and city government to disrupt the legacy of unjust policies and decision-making. In this brief we also offer working principles for Black-centered urban racial equity. Though not intended to be a comprehensive source of information, this brief highlights key facts, figures and opportunities to advance racial equity in Miami. Last Updated 08/19/2020 1 CURE developed this brief as part of a series of city profiles on structural inequities in major cities. They were originally created as part of an internal process intended to ground ourselves in local history and current efforts to achieve racial justice in cities where our client partners are located. With heightened interest in these issues, CURE is releasing these briefs as resources for organizers, nonprofit organizations, city government officials and others who are coordinating efforts to reckon with the history of racism and anti-Blackness that continues to shape city planning, economic development, housing and policing strategies. Residents most impacted by these systems are already leading the change and leading the process of reimagining Miami as a place where Black Lives Matter.

  • City of Miami Planning Department
CITY OF MIAMI PLANNING DEPARTMENT HISTORIC LEMON CITY/ LITTLE HAITI CREOLE DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES Lemon City, though never incorporated, was one of the earliest settlements in the Miami area, with its history dating back to c. 1870, when pioneers rushed to claim their share of land offered by the federal government through the Homestead Act. E.H. Harrington named the area for the lemon trees growing on his property, and the first use of the name “Lemon City” is recorded by the County in 1889. Lemon City grew as a result of the naturally occurring deep water port located at the Bay and what is now NE 61st Street. By 1896 with the arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway, Lemon City prospered with its main industries farming, fishing and shipping. By the 1920s Lemon City became a prime location for tourist camps. These camps, or parks, often had cabins for the thrifty “tin can” tourists who vacationed in Florida. One of these cabin courts, called “Magic City” remains today. One other building, the drugstore and medical office of Dr. John Gordon Du Puis, built in 1902 at 6041 NE 2nd Avenue also remains of the once prospering community. The City of Miami annexed Lemon City in 1925. Decades later the former Lemon City community saw its share of émigrés, particularly from Haiti. The infusion of this culture has brought a new and vibrant “personality” to the area. The intent of these design guidelines is to influence future public and private development to respect and enhance the character of Lemon City and the Haitian culture of Little Haiti as a desirable place to live, work, and recreate.

  • Massive 'Innovation District' Could Change Little Haiti Forever. but What
REAL ESTATE NEWS Massive ‘Innovation District’ could change Little Haiti forever. But what would that mean? BY RENE RODRIGUEZ ! " # $ SEPTEMBER 24, 2018 06:30 AM, UPDATED SEPTEMBER 25, 2018 03:27 PM $ Neil Fairman, chairman of Plaza Equity Partners, one of the developers of the Magic City Innovation District, leads a tour of the site of the mixed-use development in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018. By Carl Juste # Days before the Miami City Commission votes on a billion-dollar real estate project in Little Haiti, the debate around how the development will impact the neighborhood continues to intensify. Proponents of the Magic City Innovation District, which will be headquartered at 6001 NE Second Ave., say that the massive development, which is projected to take 10 to 15 years to complete, will propel the Little Haiti area into an international draw for tourists, creatives and tech companies. City commissioners will vote on a first round of approvals of the project on Sept. 27. If it passes, the project must win a second approval at a later date. Critics argue that the mixed-use development — a sprawl of residential, commercial, office, research and entertainment spaces spread out over 17 acres — will raise rents and property values, further squeezing Little Haiti’s poor and working classes, while adding high-tech jobs that require skills locals simply don’t have. “The writing’s on the wall,” said Chef Wilkinson “Ken” Sejour, owner and founder of Chef Creole Seafood restaurants and catering. “When this whole thing goes into full swing, the Little Haiti community will not be able to partake in this conglomerate of an endeavor.
