Maiorov Source: Byzantinoslavica Revue internationale des Etudes Byzantines (Byzantinoslavica Revue internationale des Etudes Byzantines), issue: 12 / 2014, pages: 188233, on www.ceeol.com. The daughter of a Byzantine Emperor – the wife of a Galician-Volhynian Prince Alexander V. MAIOROV (Saint Petersburg) The Byzantine origin of Prince Roman’s second wife There is much literature on the subject of the second marriage of Roman Mstislavich owing to the disagreements between historians con- cerning the origin of the Princeís new wife. According to some she bore the name Anna or, according to others, that of Maria.1 The Russian chronicles give no clues in this respect. Indeed, a Galician chronicler takes pains to avoid calling the Princess by name, preferring to call her by her hus- band’s name – “âĺëčęŕ˙ ęí˙ăčí˙ Ðîěŕíîâŕ” (Roman’s Grand Princess).2 Although supported by the research of a number of recent investiga- tors, the hypothesis that she belonged to a Volhynian boyar family is not convincing. Their arguments generally conclude with the observation that by the early thirteenth century there were no more princes in Rusí to whom it would have been politically beneficial for Roman to be related.3 Even less convincing, in our opinion, is a recently expressed supposition that Romanís second wife was a woman of low birth and was not the princeís lawful wife at all.4 Alongside this, the theory of the Byzantine ori- gin of Romanís second wife has been significantly developed in the litera- ture on the subject.

  • Dead Heroes and Living Saints: Orthodoxy
Dead Heroes and Living Saints: Orthodoxy, Nationalism, and Militarism in Contemporary Russia and Cyprus By Victoria Fomina Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: Professor Vlad Naumescu Professor Dorit Geva CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2019 Budapest, Hungary Statement I hereby declare that this dissertation contains no materials accepted for any other degrees in any other institutions and no materials previously written and / or published by any other person, except where appropriate acknowledgement is made in the form of bibliographical reference. Victoria Fomina Budapest, August 16, 2019 CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This dissertation explores commemorative practices in contemporary Russia and Cyprus focusing on the role heroic and martyrical images play in the recent surge of nationalist movements in Orthodox countries. It follows two cases of collective mobilization around martyr figures – the cult of the Russian soldier Evgenii Rodionov beheaded in Chechen captivity in 1996, and two Greek Cypriot protesters, Anastasios Isaak and Solomos Solomou, killed as a result of clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriot protesters during a 1996 anti- occupation rally. Two decades after the tragic incidents, memorial events organized for Rodionov and Isaak and Solomou continue to attract thousands of people and only seem to grow in scale, turning their cults into a platform for the production and dissemination of competing visions of morality and social order. This dissertation shows how martyr figures are mobilized in Russia and Cyprus to articulate a conservative moral project built around nationalism, militarized patriotism, and Orthodox spirituality.

The process begins by introducing key concepts and historiographic considerations for the study of ceremony and ritual and their application to the medieval world. The textological survey that follows focusses on the chronicles of Rus’, due to their compilatory nature, and discusses the philological, linguistic, and contextual factors governing the use of chronicles in this study. This examination of the ceremonies and rituals of early Rus’, the first comprehensive study of its kind for this region in the early period, engages with other studies of ceremony and ritual for the medieval period to inform our understanding of the political culture of early Rus’ and its influences.

  • Romanov Buzz
Romanov News Новости Романовых By Paul Kulikovsky №78 October 2014 150 years since the birth of Holy Martyr Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna By Paul Kulikovsky Born on 1st of November (old style 20 October) 1864, Her Grand Ducal Highness Princess Elisabeth Alexandra Louise Alice of Hessen and by Rhine, was the second child of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hessen and by Rhine and British Princess Alice. Through her mother, she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Alice chose the name "Elisabeth" for her daughter after visiting the shrine of St. Elisabeth of Hungary, ancestress of the House of Hessen. Elisabeth was known as "Ella" within her family. In the autumn of 1878, diphtheria swept through the Hessen household, killing Elisabeth's youngest sister, Marie on 16 November, as well as her mother Alice on 14 December. Elisabeth was considered by many contemporaries as one of the most beautiful women in Europe at that time. Many became infatuated with Elisabeth, but it was Russian Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich who ultimately won Elisabeth's heart. Sergei and Elisabeth married on 15 (3) June 1884, at the Chapel of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. She became Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna. “Everyone fell in love with her from the moment she came to Russia from her beloved Darmstadt”, wrote one of Sergei's cousins. The couple settled in the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace in St. Petersburg, but after Sergei was appointed Governor-General of Moscow by his elder brother, Tsar Alexander III, in 1892, they resided in the Governor palace. During the summer, they stayed at Ilyinskoe, an estate outside Moscow that Sergei had inherited from his mother.

Abstract The second edition of the Belarusian-Lithuanian Chronicles (Krasinski, Raczynski, Archaeological Society, etc.) contains a story about the subjugation of Polotsk by the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, called by researchers The Tale of Polotsk. It is believed that this collection of Chronicles originated in the early 16th century at the initiative of the Voivode of Polotsk, and the then Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of LithuaniaUMCS Albrechtas Gostautas. It attempts to combine the original history of Polotsk and the Polotsk land with the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, including the legend of the Roman origin of the Lithuanian nobility. In this Tale, there is a plot that vaguely resembles an excerpt from the Life of Euphrosyne of Polotsk, but the names of the Polotsk and Lithuanian princes have been changed beyond recognition. The questions arises: who created such a convoluted story about the Polotsk princes in the pages of the second edition of the Chronicles and why? As is well known, the first edition of the Chronicles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (late 14th – first half of the 15th century) is mainly devoted to the history of ancient Russia.

Also, Jeremiah the Prophet. Also, Asaph (or ‘Asa’: 6th c.), who is described by AZwater as ‘a very shadowy figure’: there are no early wriZen records of him, but there are place-names in Flintshire – Llanasa (the village named a_er the Church (‘llan’) which is named a_er him there, of which AZwater says he ‘was no doubt the founder’), with Fffynnon Asa, Pantasa, and Onen Asa (Asaph’s ‘Well’, ‘Valley’, and ‘Ash tree’) nearby. He was probably the founder of the monastery at Llanelwy (‘Church by the River Elwy’) and later bishop, there – when the Normans chosen it to establish a territorial see, coterminous with the principality of Powys, they named Cathedral and city St. Asaph. • Circular Tour Belarus
Circular tour Belarus During our tour of Belarus, you will become immersed in a mysterious culture, you will get to know the country and people off the beaten track and gain an understanding of what Belarus is all about: a wonderful, friendly and largely undiscovered country. Arrival in Minsk Today you are travelling to Minsk. You will be picked up at the airport by your English-speaking guide. Once you have checked into your hotel, you will go for an evening stroll around town. After that you will have supper in a typical Belarusian restaurant and then visit the Belarusian National Library, where you will have a superb view of the night lights of Minsk from the roof- top. You will be accompanied by your guide and together you will talk through the programme for the next two weeks. 2nd day: Minsk Minsk city gate. Today you will learn more about the turbulent history of the country and Minsk, the Belarusian capital. Your guide will collect you from your hotel after breakfast and together you will walk around town seeing the sights. Your journey through time will start at the first stone church (10th/11th century) and will continue to the Orthodox and Catholic churches built between the 13th and 17th century in the old town centre. In the Troitskoye district you will be able to imagine what Minsk looked like in the 19th century. The town was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War and is still considered today to be the prime example of socialist realism. Unlike the cities of Moscow or Kiev, the entire city centre represents a harmonious ensemble in the gingerbread style of the Stalinist period, the likes of which can be found nowhere else in the world.
