Queensland Youth Orchestra Ensemble Performance

Date: Sunday 22 September 2019

Number of Attendees: 60-80

Event Summary: The Deputy Premier attended an afternoon chamber music performance at M on the Bund by the Queensland Youth Orchestra (QYO) touring members. This was the QYO’s first performance during their 2019 tour to Shanghai and included a selection of classical music pieces for around 40-45 minutes. The visit to Shanghai by the QYO also marked an important milestone for the Orchestra. The full 90-piece QYO visited Shanghai in 1989, the same year the Sister State agreement was first signed by Queensland and Shanghai. China has grown to become Queensland’s number one market for trade, tourism, education and training. Cultural exchange plays a very important role in Queensland’s international relationships and connectivity with the world. The QYO has a long, rich history and connection with Shanghai. When the Sister-State Agreement was signed in 1989, the then Australian conductor John Curro led a 90-member QYO tour, which gave two concerts in Shanghai. That tour featured a young Graeme Jennings, then aged 22, as the Concertmaster (First Violin No.1) of the Orchestra. The Queensland business and Parliamentary delegations also attended the performance, which was a ticketed, open to the public event. M on the Bund regularly organises Chamber music performances and these concerts attract audiences of both local Shanghai residents and the expatriate community in Shanghai.

Scientific collaboration is more important than ever as we seek to address pressing global issues. Strong investment in research, development and world-class infrastructure by the Queensland Government, the State’s research community and industry in the last two decades has helped to establish Queensland as a knowledge hub in the Asia-Pacific. Queensland has particular research strengths in many fields including life sciences, environment and energy and we look forward to exploring further collaboration opportunities with Shanghai. The JRC will support multiple research organisations in specific areas of research and industry in Queensland and Shanghai to accelerate research and development solutions in tissue repair and regeneration. As well as QUT, other Queensland collaborators in the JRC are the University of Queensland and Field Orthopaedic Ltd, a medicine device company for advancing tissue repair and regeneration. By bringing together leading researchers and outstanding industrial partners from both Queensland and Shanghai the JRC aims to design and fabricate intelligent biomaterials for the development of functional artificial tissues and organs and promote their translation into products and services that will be used by the biomedical industry to benefit future human health. The specific goal of the JRC is to generate mature biomedical products for bone/cartilage repair, skin regeneration and vessel reconstruction to fulfil the huge demand in clinical treatment using advanced biofabrication techniques.

Last night I had the honour of representing the Premier in hosting a Queensland Government dinner celebrating the 30th anniversary of Queensland's sister-state relationship with Shanghai. Those three decades of partnership and collaboration have increased the prosperity of both our peoples No matter which industry it involves, that relationship has at its heart the mutual friendship, respect and affection for the people of Shanghai and Queensland. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on all our sister-state relationship has delivered, and what it promises for the decades to come.

By 2050, the number of Queenslanders over the age of 60 will be just over 1.7 million. At the same time in China, the same group will number 400 million. Through it's `wellness approach' to aged care services, both live-in and home visit, Queensland company Bolton Clarke has the expertise in to help China deal with this looming challenge. Last year Trade & Investment Qld led a group of Qld aged care providers on a trade mission to China. Today, it was a great privilege to witness the signing of a joint venture that will deliver 8 Senior Living Communities in China with Yango Group in Shanghai.
