  • Player's Guide
Player’s Guide By William Carter and Arlie Rahn Edited by Steven Ellis RECRUITING First thing you need to do is check out your Defensive Coach (DC), Offensive Coach (OC) and Special Teams Coach (ST). Remember, you do not have to get 5 star players immediately; you can get 3 star players and your coaches can develop them into better players. You want to create a stable program over the long haul that attracts recruits, not a short-term and unstable program that will not be attractive to potential recruits. Always think long-term. For Offensive Coach (OC) selection, O-line development is critical because they are the ones who will open up holes for your RB to exploit and protect your QB in order to have the time to complete passes. For Defensive Coach (DC) selection, cornerback development is most important because teams will throw on you no matter how good the defensive line is so you want to have fantastic pass defense, as well as using the cornerbacks to stop the run if they do not throw. So, now, once you have gotten your coaches, then you start recruitment. If you are a big name football program with high prestige then you can go after those 4 or 5 star recruits because you might be attractive to them. This is where building a stable program over the long haul comes into play- stability and high prestige can be very attractive to recruits. If you are a lower level program without a lot of prestige, go after 3, 2 and 1 star recruits because with your coaches will be able to develop them over time.

Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh Press Conference – October 24, 2019 San Francisco 49ers Listen to Audio I Media Center What do you think of the other side of the ball, the new wide receiver? “Just game planning against him in the past, [WR] Emmanuel [Sanders] is a hand-full. Great route runner, tremendous speed, great hands, violent at the catch point. I guess he’s really smart too, so it’s kind of been seamless for him. Hopefully I get a chance to be a fan this weekend and watch him.” Has that been the scuttlebutt, that he’s smart, he’s picking stuff up? “Yeah, you know just talking to coach [wide receivers coach Wes] Welker, seems like there is a lot of carryover from what they were doing in Denver, so he’s picking it up pretty quick. But, don’t take my word for it, you’ll have to talk to those guys.” What kind of development have you seen from DL Nick Bosa as a run defender? “You know what, he’s getting a lot better from a run defense perspective. He’s setting edges, he’s collapsing. If he’s on the open side, he’s really doing a good job collapsing that B-gap to make sure that there is nothing there on the flex-side run game. When he gets his opportunity on the tight end, he’s winning those one-on-ones also and constricting the C-gap while he can still maintain his D-gap. He’s getting better. Obviously, he still has a ways to go in all of that, but he is getting better.

  • How Deep Is Your Playbook?
HOW DEEP IS YOUR PLAYBOOK? TRICIA MULDOON BROWN AND ERIC B. KAHN Abstract. An American football season lasts a mere sixteen games played over seventeen weeks. This compact season leads to, fairly or unfairly, intense scrutiny of every player's performance and each coach's decision. Our goal in this paper is to determine a measure of complexity for the decision of choosing a defensive alignment on any given down. There are only four standard defensive formations, defined generally by the personnel on the field, but how a coach physically situates the players on the field can emphasize widely different defensive strengths and weaknesses. To describe the number of ways a coach achieves this goal, we utilize the notion of equivalence classes from abstract algebra to define classifications of defensive formations. Enumerative combinatorics is then necessary to count the number of fundamentally different defensive alignments through the application of binomial coefficients. Descriptions of the rules for the game and diagrams of different defensive alignments make this paper accessible to even the novice, or non-fan. 1. Introduction Many people have fond memories of participating in team sports in elementary school, high school, and even college. We recall the thrill of a close game and the joy or sadness after a win or loss. As we age, less of our time is devoted to playing sports as other responsibilities take priority and our bodies simply are not capable of competing at the same level. Our role in sport transforms from being an active participant to being a spectator. Many of us still go to the gym, play a game of racquetball, or pick up the old golf clubs on a regular basis, but rarely do these friendly competitions end in the glory of a plastic trophy so coveted in our past years.

By MARCUS HARTMAN Buckeye Sports Bulletin Staff Writer If the last game of September was one small step for the Ohio State football team, the first game of October just might turn out to be a giant leap for Urban Meyer’s program. Ohio State’s 17-16 win at Michigan State on Sept. 29 had Meyer, the national championship-winning coach in his first season leading the Buckeyes, beam- ing as he embraced everyone he could find after the final seconds ticked off at Spartan Stadium. He told reporters afterward how thrilled he was to get his first Big Ten win under his belt, but the words were unnecessary for anyone who merely saw the look on his face. Two days later, though, his mood was different as preparations for No. 21 Nebraska began. After doing his usual postgame film review, Meyer was still grateful for the victory but sounding like a man still not satisfied. He spoke almost regretfully about not being able to put more points on the board in the first five games, about the inconsistency of his ballyhooed spread offense, the one born in Ohio at Bowling Green but known for lighting up scoreboards in the West at Utah and the South at Florida.
