Cardinal O’Brien traveled to Nigeria to be the principal concelebrating bishop at the Episcopal Ordination last Thursday, to represent both the Holy Father and St Andrews and Edinburgh Archdiocese, which ‘adopted’ Bauchi in the 1950s and sent priests to work there. “It gives me great joy being at this wonderful ordination of the first African bishop of Bauchi to realise I am in a long line of wonderful people forging and strengthening those links which have been of so much benefit both to Africa and to Scotland,” the cardinal said. New bishop Bishop Goltok is the second eldest of a family of ten and his father John was the mission cook in St John’s, Bauchi for more than 20 years, until hi death last year. The newly appointed bishop was parish priest of St Finbarr’s and treasurer of Jos Archdiocese from 2004 before Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the first Nigerian bishop of Bauchi this February. During the Episcopal ordination, held at the grounds of the Immaculate Conception Secondary School on the outskirts of town, Cardinal O’Brien read the appointment letter from the Vatican and installed the new bishop with a charge for him to lead the Church well and to ensure that justice is done for all. Friday May 27 2011 SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER SUPPORT YOUR NATIONAL CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER CHURCH IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 21 A nation and Church divided and scarred DR HARRY SCHNITKER continues his extensive new series looking at the role played by the Catholic Church during the Second World War THE CHURCH IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR

S SEEN in last week’s article, the Church in France was particularly badly placed to provide a unified response to the Achallenges posed by the Nazi occupa- tion of their country. Liberal and con- servative groups within the Church had amalgamated with political factions within France’s body politic, making the notion of a ‘Catholic experience’ in war-time France almost nonsensical. In addition, there were, for most of the war, two ‘Frances’: the north and west which was occupied by Germany, and the south-east, where the right-wing Vichy regime held sway until its down- fall in 1942. In the occupied half of France, most of the country fell under the military, commanded at first by General Otto von Stülpnagel, and from March 1942 by his cousin, General Karl-Heinrich von Stülpnagel, who was murdered by the Nazis in July 1944 for his role in the plot to kill Hitler. Alsace and Lorraine were reintegrated with Germany, and large areas in the east and north closed to refugees and readied for ‘Germanic’ set- tlement. Finally, the Italians occupied small regions in the south, the island of Corsica and some Alpine passes. The collapse of France in May and June 1940 was swift and surprising: the nation that had stood in the trenches and had almost been bled dry on battlefields like Verdun simply succumbed to the Nazis. Outfought, outwitted and unwill- ing to spill soldiers’ blood again, and confounded by internal divisions, the Republic simply imploded. Loyalties were divided after the collapse, too.
