Although some taxonomic confusion in the family has been clarifed, rDNA data alone is unable to resolve higher level phylogenetic relationships within Mortierellaceae. In this study, we applied two parallel approaches to resolve the Mortierel- laceae phylogeny: low coverage genome (LCG) sequencing and high-throughput, multiplexed targeted amplicon sequenc- ing to generate sequence data for multi-gene phylogenetics. We then combined our datasets to provide a well-supported genome-based phylogeny having broad sampling depth from the amplicon dataset. Resolving the Mortierellaceae phylogeny into monophyletic genera resulted in 13 genera, 7 of which are newly proposed. Low-coverage genome sequencing proved to be a relatively cost-efective means of generating a high-confdence phylogeny. -

Two field plots at each site were exposed to differing preservative chemistries via in-ground installations of treated wood stakes for approximately 50 years. The purpose of this study is to characterize soil fungal species and to determine if long term exposure to various wood preservatives impacts soil fungal community composition. Soil fungal communities were compared using amplicon-based DNA sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region of the rDNA array. Recently, rRNA gene phylogenetic analyses of two atypical parasitic fungi with amoeboid zoospores and long kinetosomes, the sanchytrids Amoeboradix gromovi and San- chytrium tribonematis, showed that they formed a monophyletic group without close affinity with known fungal clades. Here, we sequence single-cell genomes for both species to assess their phylogenetic position and evolution. Phylogenomic analyses using different protein datasets and a comprehensive taxon sampling result in an almost fully-resolved fungal tree, with Chytridiomycota as sister to all other fungi, and sanchytrids forming a well-supported, fast-evolving clade sister to Blastocladiomycota. Comparative genomic analyses across fungi and their allies (Holomycota) reveal an atypically reduced metabolic repertoire for sanchy- trids. We infer three main independent flagellum losses from the distribution of over 60 flagellum-specific proteins across Holomycota. Based on sanchytrids’ phylogenetic position and unique traits, we propose the designation of a novel phylum, Sanchytriomycota. Indoor Air Quality Mold Concern about indoor exposure to mold has been increasing as more people have become aware that exposure to mold can cause a variety of health effects and symptoms, including allergic reactions. The Effingham County Division of Environmental Health does not offer testing or inspections for mold. We do offer educational materials about mold and mold remediation. The following are common questions and answers about mold and mold remediation: Does the IDPH test for mold? No. IDPH does not conduct residential mold investigations. IDPH has no role in landlord‐ tenant disputes. Tenants can be provided with educational information for legal assistance. Should I have my home or business tested for mold? IDPH does not advocate sampling for mold. Time and money is better spent fixing the moisture problem and cleaning or replacing water‐damaged building materials. If mold is visible there is source of moisture that needs to be eliminated, and the mold needs to be removed and the area cleaned. Even if testing is done, no standards exist to determine acceptable amounts of mold. Testing cannot determine whether adverse health effects will occur. Who can test for mold? Usually an industrial hygienist can test for mold. Look for individuals or companies under “Environmental Services” in the Yellow Pages. Also, the American Industrial Hygiene Association provides a list of members at the following website: www.aiha.org . Generally, IDPH does not recommend mold testing. What are the health effects of mold exposure? Molds produce allergens, irritants, and sometimes toxins. A person’s reaction to mold depends on the level of exposure, their age, and the person’s sensitivities to mold. -

Indoor fungal infestations and mycotoxicity: guidance for public health professionals and industrial hygienists Robert Thiboldeaux, Ph.D., Toxicologist, Wisconsin Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health, Department of Health and Family Services Introduction and scope. “Mold spores are omnipresent, and a constantly elevated humidity in given building containing organic components will inevitably lead to [fungal] growth and subsequent damage to the materials” (Gravensen, 1999). In recent years indoor fungal growth and airborne particles have gained the reputation of a serious health threat. The extent to which this perception is justified is controversial. We know that mold dust and spores can be allergenic, and that excessive exposure to fungal materials can cause infectious respiratory ailments. We also know that some mold species may produce toxic secondary metabolites. Less clear is the extent to which the presence of fungal material represents an imminent threat to human heath. Health experts agree that visible mold growth should be discouraged in the indoor environment, and that management of the indoor environment should take the form of controlling indoor humidity, disinfecting surfaces with visible mold growth, and discarding moldy articles. These are recommendations for general indoor sanitation and do not necessarily recognize indoor mold as an acute health threat. However, in recent years it has become common to confront visible indoor mold with professional assessments and drastic, costly remedies. Such measures may not be beneficial, and may cause unneeded economic stress and disruption. The purpose of this review is to provide guidance on indoor mold and mycotoxicity to the public health community. This review, while focusing on mycotoxicity, will argue that the health effects claimed to follow from inhalational exposure to fungal particles in residential, school, and office settings are poorly documented and probably multifactorial. -

In nature, molds help break down dead materials and can be found growing on soil, foods, plants and other items. Molds are also very common in buildings and homes. Mold needs moisture to grow. Indoors, mold growth can be found where humidity levels are high, like basements and showers. Molds produce microscopic cells called “spores” that are spread easily through the air. Spores can also be spread by water and insects. Live spores act like seeds, forming new mold colonies when they find the right conditions. What makes mold grow? Mold only needs a few things to grow and multiply: ●Nutrients (food) ●A suitable place to grow ●Moisture Many building materials (such as wood, sheetrock, etc.) provide food that can support mold growth. Even dust that has settled on these materials or furniture can be a food source for molds. Molds can grow almost anywhere there is enough moisture or high humidity. Controlling moisture is the key to stopping indoor mold growth, because all molds require water to grow. Ann Arbor, Michigan 48105 January 31, 2019 INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND On January 24, 2019, Ms. Nancy Spicketts of Vicksburg Community Schools contacted Nova Environmental, Inc. with a request to conduct an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) investigation at the Sunset Lake Elementary School, located at 201 North Boulevard Street, Vicksburg, Michigan. Ms. Spicketts indicated that there a staff member experiencing health concerns and requested an investigation of Classroom 410. Based on the information provided by Ms. Spicketts, it was decided that the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Investigation would include an on-site evaluation, basic parameter air quality measurements, airborne fungal spore testing and comprehensive volatile organic compound (VOC) testing in Classroom 410. An environmental consultant from Nova Environmental, Inc. arrive on-site and performed the investigation on January 31, 2019. METHODS Nova Environmental, Inc. conducted limited indoor air quality-monitoring activities at the Sunset Lake Elementary School. The investigation included the following: • A visual inspection for any obvious indoor pollutant sources in area of specific concern, (Room 410); • General Parameter measurements including; temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, percent oxygen, hydrocarbons, chlorine, and nitrogen dioxide. • Air sampling in order to determine airborne concentrations of mold and fungal spores in representative locations within the building. • TO-15 sampling for VOCs INVESTIGATION SUMMARY This section is intended to provide a general summary of the results of this IAQ Investigation. -
