(-3510 mt. ca / +1078 mt. ca) DESCRIZIONE ITINERARIO Da Punta Helbronner (confine tra Italia e Francia a 3462 metri, raggiungibile comodamente con la Funivia Skyway Monte Bianco), sul massiccio del Monte Bianco, scendere sul ghiacciaio e iniziare la discesa (qui si hanno due diversi itinerari): 1) Itinerario classico Raggiungere il Col des Flambeaux (3407mt.), scendere il Glacier du Géant lungo l’itinerario classico della Vallée Blanche fino alla "Salle à Manger" (pianoro posto a circa 2400 metri, ubicato sotto il Refuge du Requin). Da qui traversare il Ghiacciaio di Tacul verso destra (Sud/Est), postandosi alla base del Glacier de Périades; 2) Variante de la Vierge con buone condizioni del ghiacciaio, senza raggiungere il Col des Flambeaux, scendere direttamente il Glacier du Geant passando sotto la Vierge, e superare la seraccata rimanendo sulla destra, sotto la Noire, e raggiungere il Glacier de Périades (questa variante permette di raggiungere direttamente il Glacier des Périades a circa 2500 mt. senza abbassarsi alla Salle à Manger e senza compiere il lungo attraversamento del Ghiacciaio di Tacul); Risalire il Glacier de Périades (al cospetto della parete Nord del Dente del Gigante), tenendosi a sinistra (destra orografica), fino a raggiungere la base di un evidente ripido canalone che scende dalle guglie rocciose della cresta delle Periades e che rimane nascoso fino all’ultimo. Superare la terminale, risalire il canale su pendio molto ripido di 40° (alcuni tratti 45°) per circa 200 mt. e raggiugere in uscita (con scarso innevamento l’uscita è su roccia con II° con un breve passaggio di II°) la Breche de Puiseux (3432 mt.). Da qui è possibile proseguire verso sinistra, sull'esile crestina, e in breve raggiungere il Bivacco des Periades 3.440 mt. Discesa: Scendere sul Ghiacciaio del Mont Mallet (qui si hanno 3 possibilità): 1) Direttamente dalla Breche de Puiseux, sul versante opposto, con corda fissa di una sessantina di metri a cui tenersi (possibilità di fare 2 doppie attrezzate da 30 mt.) 2) Dal bivacco, sul versante opposto (lungo un canale poco inclinato) con possibilità di fare 2 doppie attrezzate da 30 mt. (è possibile effettuare una calata da 60 mt.) 3) Dal canale (molto ripido) poco prima di raggiungere il bivacco, sul versante opposto con possibilità di fare 2 doppie attrezzate da 30 mt. (è sconsigliato effettuare una calata da 60 mt.) In base alle condizioni del ghiacciaio del Mont Mallet (grandi crepacci) scendere tenendosi preferibilmente verso sinistra per imboccare poi, verso destra, un ripido pendio (sciando al cospetto della parete Nord delle Grandes Jorasses). Compiere un ampio semicerchio verso sinistra e raggiungere il ghiacciaio di Leschaux, in vista dell'omonimo rifugio. Seguire il ghiacciaio fino a raggiungere la Mer de Glace, innestandosi sull'itinerario classico della Vallée Blanche. Proseguire verso il fondo della morena (quota 1800 circa) e raggiungere la scala in ferro che porta al trenino di Montanvers (1913 mt.) che riporta a Chamonix (Se le condizioni d'innevamento lo permettono proseguire la discesa sino al termine della morena dove con un breve tratto a piedi si raggiunge un colletto (1638 metri; presente un chiosco bar: Buvette des Mottes). Da qui seguire la strada di rientro della Vallée Blanche fino a Chamonix (1030 mt.). Difficoltà: itinerario molto lungo per il suo sviluppo che si snoda in ambiente glaciale (presenti molti crepacci in base alle condizioni) e di alta montagna, riservato ad ottimi sciatori alpinisti; Molto ripido in salita il canale che posta alla Breche de Puiseux (difficoltà alpinistiche PD+/AD ove sono possibili passaggi su roccia di II/III grado in base alle condizioni; inclinazione 40/45 gradi); Massima attenzione alla discesa del Ghiacciaio del Mallet in quanto molto crepacciata. ANNOTAZIONI UTILI Itinerario da affrontare con ARTVA, PALA e SONDA al seguito. Attrezzatura alpinistica: casco, piccozza e Ramponi.     • The Traverse of the G1·andes J or asses. 63 (snow-covered in the photograph, but found dry by us), to get into which one has to climb over an exposed needle with a few and not very useful handholds, but not necessarily extremely difficult. It was here that the first piton became necessary. Nothing out of the way as far as the face of the couloir where we began our return to the ridge by a sharply curving line. Then follows a little couloir, broken in half at ' B,' and immediately above ' 0 ' a second needle, with large masses of · rock in unstable equilibrium, which demand continued and vigilant care while climbing them, and careful tests before trusting oneself to them. On this part, only a couple of metres long, we fixed three pitons at very short distances from each other. Then again broken and unstable rock, as far as the slabs, convenient even though covered with debris, which lead to below the ' nose.' At intervals the rock shows yellowish streaks which make one imagine one is in the presence of layers of sulphur, an impression strengthened by the odour they exhale. From below the ' nose,' a slight deviation towards the face is necessary, in order to enter the little chimney, clearly seen in the photo­ graph, and which offers firm rock and good handholds. This enables one to regain the ridge, which leads easily to the summit. Very fatiguing is this last chimney, especially on account of its length. As regards personal considerations, there is freedom from objective dangers and no falling stones,4 but in this matter we were perhaps favoured also by the weather.

    EXPEDITIONS IIS EXPEDITIONS HuASCARAN, I958. Our problem was which peak to climb during the last ten days in the Cordillera Blanca. By August 22, if everything went according to plan, we should have climbed our seventh peak and re­ turned to Huaras. The party, consisting of Miss Myrtle Emslie, Dr. Hugh Simpson and Mr. William Wallace, was divided on the proposal to climb Huascaran. Until this year the only route of ascent had been from the north side via the Garganta. This route did not attract us. In Huaras we learned of a new route climbed by an Ameri­ can party one month previously on the South face and ridge. This news of a new route decided us; we would attempt Huascaran. Monday, August 25, saw _us making our way up the Quebrada Ulta. Two donkeys were quite adequate to carry all our food and equipment as we did not require porters and were travelling as light as possible. In the afternoon we established Base Camp at I I,700 ft. under the southern flank of the mountain. The next morning we slowly toiled up the precipitous sides of the Quebrada and at last reached the top where we were confronted by the great glaciers and ice-falls of the South face. As the sun climbed higher in the sky our packs seemed to grow heavier and heavier. By early afternoon we had reached the lowest point of the glaciers, about I,ooo ft. below a prominent rock ridge on which we hoped to camp. At last, at I6,ooo ft., we reached the crest of the ridge where we found an ideal camp site which, we later learned, had taken four of the American party half a day to level.

JENKINS Read before the Alpine Club, May 6, 1941 ET me first say that this Paper cannot claim to be a chronicle of great achievements, of carefully planned and hard-won new ascents, and of hairbreadth escapes from death. It cannot pretend to be anything more than a ~ketchy · account of some of the modest climbs which Michael Taylor and I have done in partnership in th~ Alps since 1933. Many of our humble exploits are hardly worthy of record in the annals of the Club, but these are exceptional times, and if I can rekindle in your minds some memories of happier days, I shall be satisfied. I hope also to convey something of the approach to the hills which is peculiar to my generation, and to throw into relief some new aspects of mountain philosophy. - We live in a machine age, at a time of hustle and struggle when opportunities for relaxation and recreation are gradually receding. Before the war, young climbers who were engaged in industry or commerce were fortunate if they could obtain more than a brief 14 days' holiday each summer; by taking in August Bank Holiday we used to manage 18 days. The great achievements had to be left to the leisured and privileged, and to those who served the State or who had academic or professional careers.

    The Walker Spur of the Grandes Jorasses H e n r y W . K e n d a l l TH E GREAT north faces of the Alps have exerted a peculiar fascination for climbers since the time when climbing techniques became sufficiently advanced for ascents of these routes to be considered seriously. Their combinations of length (and grandeur), technical diffi­ culties and generally poor weather represented to many people the ultimate challenges of Alpine climbing, requiring stamina, a broad variety of tech­ niques and, in some cases, considerable luck to be climbed successfully. Of the six north faces described by Gaston Rébuffat (in his book Starlight and Storm) the Eigerwand is perhaps the most famous. The history of efforts on that face, some successful, so many ending in bitter tragedy, have been the subject of a book (The White Spider by Heinrich Harrer). The face is characterized by great hazard, greater than that found on any of the others. Of the other five north faces, two, the Piz Badile in the Engadine, and the Cima Grande di Lavaredo in the Dolomites, are pure rock climbs. The last three are mixed climbs having both rock and snow and ice in proportions that depend on the season. These climbs are the north faces of the Dru, the Matterhorn and the Grandes Jorasses. Of these the greatest in size, and perhaps the most magnificent, is the face of the Grandes Jorasses. Of all six it is the most difficult technically and, conse­ quently, the only one that has not yet been climbed in the winter.† It has been climbed a number of times in the summer however and there are a number of accounts of such ascents.* A further account of an ascent would not be warranted were it not for the fact that growing interest in Alpine climbing among American climbers makes it useful to publish a complete description of such a big climb in a journal accessible to those tempted to try an ascent.

Demand outstripped supply, particularly in the case of the early photographs which were so cumbersome and expensive to create, but, crucially, these mementoes of such wondrous landscapes allowed the viewers to supplant themselves and stand in the artist's footsteps. WJ Mitchell Our sixteenth winter catalogue of Alpine paintings, drawings and vintage photography from the 1850s to the present day offers much topographical diversity but, as ever, opts for quality over any attempt to cover all the better known Alpine resorts and peaks. As a result there are some newcomers to these catalogues such as Arthur Croft, (page 32) Leopold Rothaug (page 30) Karl Prinz (page 28) and Arthur Gardner (page 37) whose work, nevertheless, is sufficiently accomplished to be shown alongside the formidable peintres-alpinistes such as Charles-Henri Contencin. There are no fewer than six Contencin pictures this year, and a first in my having found a free copy by him of a well-known Garbiel Loppé painting (page 21).
