Fishing Report 2020 Far Beyond Concert Series: Meet the Dock Rockers January 23, 2020 The West Coast Fishing Club is pleased to present a brand-new music trip to The Clubhouse that features live music nightly by our house band The Dock Rockers. The band consists of some of Canada’s most sought-after professional musicians who have recorded and performed with a long list of international artists – from Shania Twain and Cher to Bon Jovi and Motley Crue – and countless musical points in between. They’ve also recorded and/or performed with Canadian rock icons Loverboy, Trooper, Prism, Chilliwack, Barney Bentall and have for many years been the backing band for music legend Randy Bachman and the frame of Bachman-Turner, whose long list of global hit singles include Takin’ Care of Business and Roll on Down the Highway. Introducing The Dock Rockers: The band members are Marc LaFrance (drums, vocals); Mick Dalla-Vee (guitar, keyboards, vocals); Brent Knudsen (bass, guitar, vocals), and Ian Cameron (guitar, violin, vocals). Read below for band member’s full bios. MARC LAFRANCE Marc has been involved in the music industry for over four decades and is a well-known and highly regarded industry professional. He has performed as a drummer and/or singer on over 100 albums, and countless sessions and live performances. In addition to playing drums and singing in the band Bachman Turner and as a member of Randy Bachman’s touring band, some of Marc’s past and present accomplishments include recordings with a vast array of prominent artists including Canadian groups Crowcuss, Chilliwack, Payolas, Loverboy, Trooper, Prism, Shari Ulrich, Bruce Miller, Straight Lines and Glass Tiger and international stars such as Long John Baldry, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Cher, Carly Simon, Blue Murder, The Cult, David Lee Roth, Scorpions, Black Veil Brides, “Michael Bublé’s Christmas in New York,” and many others. MICK DALLA-VEE Singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Mick Dalla-Vee taught himself to first play the guitar at age 10. In a career that’s spanned three decades, the Cease & Desist front-man, bassist and guitarist has also become a very busy studio producer, musician, arranger and vocalist. Mick attained Gold and Platinum status for his work with Bachman & Turner (Live in New York City 2010) amongst other musical awards and co-written or written everything from country to smooth jazz, has played bass for Canadian rock legend Randy Bachman (The Guess Who, Bachman Turner Overdrive) and keyboards for Grammy Award-winning R&B diva Melanie Fiona. He has also contributed vocals to projects by Mötley Crüe and Trooper, and created soundscapes for TV programs such as HGTV’s popular Holmes Makes Right series. Currently he has an ongoing contract writing music soundscapes for ITV in the USA and Great Britain along with business partner Jeff Neill (of Streetheart and Jimmy Barnes fame) with their company ‘The NV Music Group. Since 1986, Mick has played in ‘Revolver – The World’s Best Beatles Band’ to sold out houses everywhere. BRENT KNUDSEN Brent is a gifted and versatile instrumentalist, singer and songwriter who has played with, or shared the stage with many other stars including Dwight Yoakam, Alabama, Michelle Wright, Deanna Carter, Don Felder (The Eagles), Patricia Conroy, Aaron Pritchett, Alan Frew and many others. Along with Marc LaFrance and Mick Dalla-Vee, he is an original member of Cease and Desist and a veteran sideman (guitar, vocals) for Randy Bachman and Bachman Turner. He has also written and recorded two country albums that garnered national airplay and awards, including a nomination for best Male Country Vocalist at the Canadian Country Music Awards. Brent has also made a feature film appearance as Neil Diamond’s guitar player in “Saving Silverman,” with Jason Bigg, Jack Black and Amanda Peet. IAN CAMERON Ian began playing violin at age 5. He studied classically for over a decade including Toronto Conservatory theory, harmony and composition. Beginning his career as guitarist/violinist for Capitol/EMI recording artists Strange Advance, he has appeared on hundreds of recordings and has played live or in session with innumerable artists including Mike Reno (Loverboy), Bobby Kimball (Toto), Jimi Jameson (Survivor) Shania Twain and countless other talented musicians and singers worldwide. Over the years he has written and co- written several radio singles including a number two chart position in Europe. He also co-wrote and played violin on the 2013 GRAMMY® nominated album Rumbadoodle with Singapore-based producer Arun Shenoy. Photo: Hans Sipma The hippie movement was alive and well in 1970, riding on the waves of the 1967 Summer of Love where more than a hundred thousand hippies converged on San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district to celebrate counterculture music, drugs, free love, and anti-war sentiment. In 1969, Woodstock, New York became famous for its three days of peace and music. Nine months later, hippies would once again amass—this time at a setting much closer to home. This local music event would go down in history not just for the calibre of bands scheduled to play but the memorable events that followed. Sunday, May 24, 1970 was the day of the Niverville Pop Festival. Niverville’s Woodstock During the 1960s and 70s, Winnipeg was a hotbed of young musical talent. One of those bands, called Brother, was quickly rising in notoriety. Its members included Bill Wallace, Kurt Winter, and Vance Masters, and their talent established them as one of the city’s hottest supergroups. Harold Wiebe, formerly of the Niverville area, recalls a night spent in the pub of the Westminster Hotel. There, friend and band member Bill Wallace joined him for a drink between sets. Wallace shared with him an idea to recreate Woodstock right here at home. But unlike Woodstock, Wallace wanted this event to have a charitable purpose.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 1, 2011 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT & CLASSIC ROCK 101 PRESENT BURTON CUMMINGS FRIDAY, JUNE 3 Richmond, BC – Burton Cummings, one of Canada’s rock legends, first played with The Devrons before joining The Guess Who in 1965. Cummings, who was born in Winnipeg, spent ten years with the band where he wrote and with Randy Bachman, he co-wrote most of the band’s biggest hits including “These Eyes”, “Laughing” and “American Woman”. After leaving for a solo career, he released a self-titled album in 1976. The single, "Stand Tall" was an international hit reaching #2 on The Billboard Hot 100 and selling over a million copies. The album along with its follow-up the next year, My Own Way To Rock both reached Double Platinum. His third solo album, Dream Of A Child became the first Canadian album to achieve Triple Platinum. His numerous hits include “My Own Way To Rock”, “Break It To Them Gently” and “I Will Play A Rhapsody”. He has received several Juno Awards including “Most Promising Male Singer” in 1977 and “Best Male Singer” that same year as well as in 1980. Cummings has also ventured into acting having starred in the 1982 feature film, Melanie which co-starred Don Johnson, Glynnis O’Connor and Paul Sorvino. In recognition of his work with The Guess Who and under his own name, he was the recipient of the William Harold Moon Award for International Achievement in 1989. Although he now resides in Sherman Oaks, California, he still retains ties in Winnipeg appearing at several functions including the 1997 Flood Relief concert.

DURRELL BOWMAN Given Canada’s relatively small population (twenty-one million in 1969, thirty-four million in 2009), many—but certainly not all—of the nation’s more ambitious musicians have pursued at least some of their career activities in the US and other foreign parts. Rush mainly demonstrates “Canadianness” by combining such British and American influences as progressive rock, hard rock, and indi- vidualism. However, the band has also included more specifically Canadian references across its long career. CanCon The Canadian government implemented specific content—or “CanCon”—regulations in 1971, and broadcasters were then required to include certain percentages of Canadian material. For music, at least two of a song recording’s four main categories of Music, Artist, Production, and Lyrics (“M-A-P-L”) must be “Canadian” according to citizenship or location. The interpretation of this changed after 1991, due to a “scandal” involving Bryan Adams failing to qualify as Canadian because of co-writing certain songs, such as “(Everything I Do) I Do it For You” ( Waking up the Neighbours and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves , both 1991), with such non-Canadians as Mutt Lange and Michael Kamen. (Spelling the word “neighbours” in the Canadian way apparently didn’t help.) The outcome is that even though Shania Twain similarly co- wrote the songs on Come on Over (1997) with her then-husband Mutt Lange and did not record any of this music in Canada, her album and its songs by that point qualified as Canadian.

    The Roots Report: Starship Fails to Blast Off and The Guess Who Left Me Scratching My Head Mickey Thomas of Starship Okee dokee folks… The other night I went to check out a show featuring two classic rock bands at Twin River’s Event Center. The bands were Starship, featuring Mickey Thomas, and The Guess Who. I have never had the chance to see these bands live before, but have seen a few of the original members of the original line-ups in separate circumstances. While I am not a huge fan of Starship, I was a fan of its former incarnations, The Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, and I do very much enjoy the music of The Guess Who. The concert on Saturday night I felt was heavy-handed and left me wondering what I had just seen. Of the 11 musicians between the two bands, there was only ONE founding member in their rosters: The Guess Who’s drummer, Garry Peterson. The new members, or “hired guns,” seemed out of place and took liberties that one should not do when presenting classic rock. It almost seemed as if members of Spinal Tap had taken over the two bands. The one shining star of the evening was Starship’s Stephanie Calvert. Her look and voice filled the Grace Slick void very well, though at times she seemed to be trying too hard to sound like Slick. While Mickey Thomas has earned his place in Starship and is the voice of the classic song by Elvin Bishop “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” his pipes, at 68, are getting a tad rusty though they still pass.
