Studies on the Oil of Black Right Whale in the Northern Pacific Ocean STUDIES ON THE OIL OF BLACK RIGHT WHALE IN THE NORTHERN PACIFIC OCEAN HIDEO TSUYUKI* AND lJHEI NARUSE** INTRODUCTION A number of studies have been made in whale oil from olden time. However, the oil of black right whale, Eubalaena glacialis, has almost remained unexplored to this day. Because, our ancestors had caught a number of black right whales, so that we have all the world over been stopped to catch them for keeping of their resource. The works studied on whale oils were chiefly concerned with its physical­ chemical properties. But only a little work was made in the study of the oils con­ tained in various parts of a whale body and component fatty acids. These works seems to be important from the view points of fat metabolism in whale bodies and the utilization of whale oils. Regarding the differences in the characteristics of the oils contained in various parts of a whale body, Drs. M. Saiki and T. Mori1 >- 3 >, and Messrs. H. Watanabe 4 5 and K. Suzuki » > studied several kinds of whales. Reviewing the works done on the black right whale oil, we have merely been reported by Dr. M. Saiki. 6 > He studied the chemical characteristics of the oils contained in some blubbers of black right whale, which had been caught 102 miles 80° off " Kinkazan " (Miyagi pre­ fecture in the north-eastern part of Japan) on 23rd May, 1956. However, this work was very simple, so that we can say that we have no sufficient work on the differences in the characteristics of the oils contained in various parts of a black right whale body. Further, as to the study on the component fatty acids of the black right whale oil, we have not been reported yet. The writers were fortunate enough to obtain the oils in various blubbers, meats and viscera of three black right whales and examine their properties in­ cluding component fatty acids. The authors wish to express their thanks to the Whales Research Institute for presenting the experimental materials of three black right whales and for kind co-operation and assistance. Med., Nihon Univ. 171 172 H. TSUYUKI AND U. NARUSE caught in southern sea of Kodiak Island (N 55°53' ,--._,54', W 153°4' "'6') on the 22nd August, 1961 by the" Kyokuyomaru" Fleet (Fig. 1). These whales were treated on the boat immediately after catching as follows: At first, they were dissected and divided into various meats, blubbers (Fig. 2) and organs. Each portion was immediately refrigerated at -20°C. Returning to port, OIL OF BLACK RIGHT WHALE 173 these materials described above were sent to the laboratory. In the laboratory, the oils contained in various blubbers were obtained by boiling these blubbers in water. On the other hand, the oils in various meats and organs were extracted with acetone in an atmosphere of nitrogen gas. The specific gravity, refractive index, acid value, saponification value and unsaponifiable material content ( %) of the obtained oils were measured in the usual manner and the iodine value was determined by the Wijs method. Beneath the waterproof outer feathers is a fluffy, soft layer of down feathers, which keep birds warm.

Moore+ Contact e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The biopsy 2 via dart, trocar or surgery 2 is becoming the preferred protocol for sampling skin and blubber of many cetacean species, because a small sample from a healthy animal may provide better information than a larger sample collected via necropsy from an ill or emaciated animal. Furthermore, the biopsy is often the only means of obtaining samples (e.g. for threatened or endangered species). Because biopsy darts collect only a small sample of tissue 2 and blubber can be heterogeneous in structure and composition 2 it is essential to compare the results obtained from biopsies to those found by analysing full-thickness blubber samples obtained via necropsy. This manuscript compares blubber stratification in two odontocete species, white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) and killer whales (Orcinus orca). Five parameters (i.e. lipid percent and classes, contaminant concentrations and profiles, fatty acid profiles) were measured by blubber depth. Results of these comparisons strongly suggest that biopsy results must be interpreted with caution and in conjunction with results from species-specific blubber depth profiling. For example, lipid classes measured in biopsy samples of white whales and killer whales were similar to those for equivalent-depth samples obtained by necropsy.

    Blubber Glove Experiment Marine mammals like seals, penguins, dolphins and walruses need to keep warm in very cold waters. To do this they have a thick layer of fat called “blubber”. In this experiment we test the effectiveness of blubber for keeping warm. Set up time: 15 minutes Wait time: Varies What do you need? 1. 2 large bowls or 1 basin 2. Cold water 3. Ice-cubes (lots) 4. 1lb butter or margarine (soft, at room temperature) 5. 4 x plastic zip-lock bags (you can wash & reuse them after!) 6. Towel 7. Assistant (optional) 8. Stop-watch (or phone stop-watch) (optional) 9. Thermometer (optional) What do you do? 1. Fill the bowls (or basin) with cold water and ice – it should be about two-thirds full, leave some space at the top. If you are using two bowls, make sure you put an equal number of ice-cubes in each bowl – the more ice the better! 2. Use a spoon to empty the butter/margarine into one of the zip-lock bags. 3. Next, put one hand in another clean zip-lock bag so that it’s like a glove. Now put your “gloved” hand into the bag with the butter. 4. Use your free hand to help pat your gloved hand so that the butter spreads evenly around it. To be sure there’s no mess you can use tape to seal the inner bag to the outer bag (but remember it’s a glove – so don’t seal the inside bag shut!) 5. If you have a thermometer, check the temperature of the water in your bowl(s).

    HOW DO WHLAES STAY WARM? BELUGA WHALES Beluga whales are marine mammals that live in the Arctic Ocean. They can grow up to 6 meters long, which is not very big compared to other whales. In fact, they are the smallest of all the whale species. Although their habitat provides them with lots of food such as salmon, cod, octopus, and squid, but it is also incredibly cold. The water can reach 0°C! Belugas live in these freezing waters all year round. Most other mammals would eventually get too cold and die of hypothermia, but Belugas can maintain a constant warm body temperature. How do they do this? To help them keep warm, Beluga whales have a thick layer of fat and connective tissue under their skin called blubber. This accounts for more than 40% of the Beluga whales’ weight and is an excellent source of insulation. It also stores energy for when there isn’t much food about. DESIGN YOUR OWN EXPERIMNT A layer of fat or blubber helps the beluga whales keep warm. Think about what experiment you would design to see if fat is good at insulating against ice-cold water. To help you design your experiment think about the following points: • What is your Research Question? what do you want to find out? • In your experiment what is the one thing will you change, and what will you keep the same? • What data will you collect and how will you record it? • What is your hypothesis? How will you know if the data supports your hypothesis or opposes it? Food frequency and 24-hour recall dietary interviews dur­ ing September, 1985, for more than 90% of households and more than 75% of in· dividuals (n=312) was the sample size for this pilot study. 233 people (76% of the sample) recalled consumption of Inuit foods, with seal, caribou and narwhal account­ ing for 45.6% by weight of the Inuit food intake. Individual intake varied from 20 to a total of 2490 g/day, with those over 41 years of age consuming greater amounts than younger individuals. Narwhal and ringed seal were the primary contributors of PCB (94% of average intake at 46 µg/day). The blubber of these two animals were preferred foods in the Inuit food system during this time period and contained major amounts of PCB's, omega fatty acids, and retinal. PCB's in narwhal and seal blubber were 10.0 µg/g and 0.5 µg/g, respectively. Total omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids were 8.8% and 30.1% total fat, respectively.

WETZEL1 and TODD M. O’HARA2 (Received 28 March 2005; accepted in revised form 26 August 2005) ABSTRACT. Concerns exist regarding the health and nutrition of subsistence-based communities in Alaska. An apparent increase in diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and other disease conditions among Alaska Natives has accompanied their change from a traditional diet to a more “Western” diet. In northern Alaska, the meat, maktak (epidermis and blubber), and other products of bowhead whales provide important components of Native diets. This study assessed the fatty acid constituents of bowhead whale blubber to evaluate their possible health benefits. Working with hunters in Barrow, Alaska, we acquired samples for chemical analysis from five blubber depths at each of six body locations. We used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of fatty-acid picolinyl esters to confirm the fatty-acid composition of samples. Analyses indicated that bowhead blubber contains relatively high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and that, on average, blubber samples from sites at the umbilical girth contain more omega- 3 fatty acids than do samples from a girth 1 m caudal to the blowhole (roughly at the axillary girth). Omega-6 fatty acids were rare or undetectable in all samples. Omega-3 fatty acids have been suggested or shown to be important in the treatment or prevention of many diseases, including elevated blood pressure and cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and some cancers.
