Our region is often identified as a land of great saints, works of art that should not be missed, and a landscape steeped in an idyllic and spiritual atmosphere. But alongside the Umbria of the classical “Grand Tour” there is another Umbria less familiar, less stereotyped, and still to be explored. A region made up of wild untouched forests, endless mountain pastures, and skies dotted with brightly-coloured hang gliders; of deep dark ravines, exquisite tiny islands, and oases inhabited by thousands of migratory birds. This Umbria has inspired the many authors who have seen and described its charm. And so we have returned to describe the “green heart of Italy”, and it seems appropriate to do so during the International Journalism Festival, the prestigious gathering held in Perugia every spring where hundreds of reporters meet to discuss the most important issues of global information. “Stories on Umbria” is the international competition promoted by the Chambers of Commerce of Perugia and Terni which award prizes for printed articles, TV reports and Web articles that help promote Umbria and the region both in Italy and abroad. That is the idea behind this publication. After the success of the previous edition, we are happy to present our readers with a selection of the articles which were included in the 2012 journalism awards … to enjoy the true flavour of a region where you should expect the unexpected. Sisto, 06132 – Perugia, Italy Received 3 December 2014; Accepted 4 March 2015 Abstract – We set the first comprehensive inventory of Trichoptera species from the Topino River basin (Umbria, Italy), based on research carried out from 1947 to 2006 at 61 lotic sites (including rheocrenous and rheolimnocrenous springs and watercourses) and 1 lentic site (marsh). In total, 78 species and 5 subspecies from 17 families were collected. The species belong to several chorological categories. The inventory com- prises 16 species and 5 subspecies endemic to the Italian fauna with Rhyacophila italica, Drusus camerinus, Drusus improvisus and Allogamus ausoniae limited to the central Apennines. The presence of Beraeodes minutus and Erotesis baltica in the Fonti del Clitunno and Wormaldia pulla marlieri in the Fergia River is noteworthy because they are rare species in Italy. Almost 60 years of research now allow us to draw a synthesis of Trichoptera diversity and distribution in light of the geological history at the drainage basin level. Key words: Trichoptera / Topino basin / tectonics Introduction
