Insular ecosystems have proven exceptionally susceptible to invasion by aliens and vulnerable to their negative effects. Some of the most destructive alien species are vertebrates, in part due to their having been introduced to islands worldwide. Rodents (Rattus spp. and Mus musculus) are among the most widespread and devastating invasive species for insular flora and fauna. In this research I investigate the biogeographic patterns and processes of alien vertebrates in the Galápagos Islands, focusing on the mechanisms that influence their dispersal and colonization within the archipelago. In the first study, I review and synthesize the available literature on alien vertebrates in the Galápagos. I investigate the vii impacts to the native flora and fauna from alien vertebrates and the spatial and temporal patterns of colonization in the archipelago. I summarize management efforts directed at alien vertebrates and assess the potential future impacts to the Galápagos from alien vertebrates. In the second study, I examine the distribution of the three alien rodents from a biogeographic perspective. Island area and isolation from a source population are examined to determine the influence of these landscape features on the incidence of a rodent species on an island. In the third study, I conduct a multivariate analysis of the biotic and abiotic factors influencing intra-archipelago dispersal and colonization of two alien rodents. This richness is represented by 35 species of turtles, fve crocodilians, and 437 squamates including three amphisbaenians, 197 lizards, and 237 snakes. Of these, 45 species are endemic to the Galápagos Islands and 111 are mainland endemics. The high rate of species descriptions during recent decades, along with frequent taxonomic changes, has prevented printed checklists and books from maintaining a reasonably updated record of the species of reptiles from Ecuador. Here we present Reptiles del Ecuador (http://bioweb.bio/faunaweb/reptiliaweb), a free, resource-rich online portal with updated information on Ecuadorian reptiles. This interactive portal includes encyclopedic information on all species, multimedia presentations, distribution maps, habitat suitability models, and dynamic PDF guides. We also include an updated checklist with information on distribution, endemism, and conservation status, as well as a photographic guide to the reptiles from Ecuador.

    Route A 8 Tage Yolita II Day 1 – Sunday AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport: Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, you will first pass through an airport inspection point where your TCT (Transit Control Card) will be checked and stamped (please keep this carefully with your passport as you will need to show it again when you leave Galapagos). Here you will also pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee of USD 100 (unless it has been prepaid). To ensure that no foreign plants or animals are introduced to the islands, your luggage will be inspected as well. At the arrival hall a naturalist guide will meet you and escort you on a short bus ride to the harbor at Baltra. By dinghy you will be taken to the yacht. PM: Bachas Beach, Santa Cruz Island These two small beaches are found to the West of Turtle Cove. Their sand is made of decomposed coral, which makes it white and soft, making it a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind one of the beaches there is a small brackish water lagoon, where occasionally it is possible to observe flamingos and other coastal birds, such as black-necked stilts and whimbrels. The other beach is longer, but it has two old barges that were abandoned during the Second World War, when the USA used Baltra Island as a strategically point to protect the Panama Channel. Day 2 – Monday AM: Darwin Bay, Genovesa Island This bay has origin when the crater of this island collapsed below sea level. The wet landing is on a beautiful white coral sandy beach.

Abstract Nesting in the lizard Phyllopezus pollicaris (Squamata: Phyllodactylidae) and a phylogenetic perspective on communal nesting in the family. Communal nesting occurs in many reptile species. The hypotheses that explain the evolution of such behaviours are still controversial, but will be better understood as more communal nesting records are a communal nesting record for squamate species in a Cerrado core area. We provide nest photographs and detailed neonate measurements and weight. Nests were found during the dry season, in contrast with the reproduction pattern previously described for the species in the Cerrado periphery. We also conducted an extensive literature review seeking all available information on communal nesting information in Phyllodactylidae, and present this information in the context of a phylogenetic tree of phyllodactylid genera. We were greeted by fearless birds and mammals right from the start as we boarded the Nemo II at Baltra Island. Our circuitous route touched so many special places: Daphne Major, North Seymour, Floreana, Isabela, Fernandina, Santa Cruz, Espanola, Genovesa, and back to Santa Cruz and Baltra. Specific locations we visited were: Asilo de la Paz, Punta Moreno, Urbina Bay, Tagus Cove, Punta Espinosa, Dragon Hill, Whale Beach, Punta Suarez, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Darwin's Bay, Prince Philip's Steps, Cerro Crocker, Los Gemelos, Rancho Primicias, and Punta Ayora. We eventually tallied all of the endemic birds except The exquisite Waved Albatross at Punta Suarez were favorites for many of us. The breeding colony on Mangrove Finch, a species so endangered that access to Espanola Island comprises the vast majority of the world population for this species.

New age determinations and bathymetric data are reported and used to assess the Holocene paleogeography of the archipelago. The theories of hotspot tectonics and volcanic-island subsidence are also applied to estimate the distribution of islands for the past 5 million years. The ages of emergence of the Galápagos Islands decrease to the west and are consistent with the Nazca Plate moving 59 km/M.y. to the east. The islands subside proportionately to the square root of their age, leading to their eventual drowning. Sea level today is 125 m higher than it was just 20,000 years ago, leading to the drowning of many islets and several major islands, and the isolation of several of the major islands which had been interconnected. The geographic template for studies of the organismal colonization and dispersal within the archipelago has changed drastically over the past 20,000 years.
