  • Diana Gabaldon in Conversation
Diana Gabaldon in conversation [MUSIC PLAYING] SPEAKER: In advance of the opening of our major exhibition, Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites, writer Diana Gabaldon visited the National Museum of Scotland to talk about her work. Hear her in conversation with fellow writer Lin Anderson as she discusses the origins of the best-selling series, Outlander, which revolves around the Jacobite challenges. Discover how she combines history and fiction in her novels, even bringing Bonnie Prince Charlie himself to life. [APPLAUSE] LIN ANDERSON: Well, your reaction when Diana came into the room was much the same as my own. When I got the email asking me to do this, I couldn't believe I could be as lucky. In 1998, my husband and I were in Venice, and at that time Marco Polo Airport was quite a small affair. It's got much bigger since then. And we were on their way back from a week, and my book was finished, and I thought, I wonder if they've got a book in the airport. It was a tiny little, almost a cupboard of a book shop, and I looked for the English language books, and there were six in a shelf. And there was this one called Cross Stitch, and actually what drew my eye first of all it was nice and thick. I thought, it will last me. And I pulled it down and I read the back of the book, and I thought somebody's written about Scotland. Wow! And I took the book with me, and I loved it.

Due to its immediate success, the novel became a series, of which Gabaldon is currently writing the ninth book. The first novel revolves around British army nurse Claire Randall, who travels back in time through a stone circle in the Highlands of Scotland during her second honeymoon with her husband Frank after the end of the Second World War. After travelling through the stones, Claire finds herself in eighteenth century Scotland, where she is captured by a group of Scots. Claire proves herself useful to them by showing her healing skills, and their Laird, Colum MacKenzie, appoints her as his castle’s healer.

Written by Maureen Younger ARTS Outlander’s Jamie Fraser: a new kind of romantic hero? Season two of Outlander starts next month. Maureen Younger caught up with season one and discovered protagonist Jamie Fraser might be the bravest romantic hero of all. Posted on 16/03/2016 Out of time: Outlander ‘s Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) stand their ground. Photos: Sony Pictures Television. Watching Outlander shift in tone in its final two episodes from a Scottish Poldark to a Scottish Game of Thrones proved to be two of the most bruising and emotionally draining hours of TV I have ever watched. Though seemingly following the tropes of your standard historical romance (a bit of time travel notwithstanding), Outlander actually subverts them. No more so than with its male lead, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Jamie becomes a victim of a prolonged sexual assault: in one fell swoop Outlander may have invented a new kind of romantic hero – and a much braver one at that. Based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander is the tale of Claire Randall (played by Caitriona Balfe). During a second honeymoon in Scotland in 1945, Claire manages to fall back through time to 1743. Ah, that old chestnut I hear you cry! For the first 14 episodes we watch our feisty heroine meet and fall in love with the hunky Jamie Fraser. Together they have to contend with their would-be nemesis in the form of ‘Black Jack’ Randall (Tobias Menzies).
