The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) The Role of Deobandi Ulema in Strengthening the Foundations of Indian Freedom Movement (1857-1924) * Turab-ul-Hassan Sargana **Khalil Ahmed ***Shahid Hassan Rizvi Abstract The main objective of the present study is to explain the role of the Deobandi faction of scholars in Indian Freedom Movement. In fact, there had been different schools of thought who supported the Movement and their works and achievements cannot be forgotten. Historically, Ulema played a key role in the politics of subcontinent and the contribution of Dar ul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir-ul- Uloom (Saharanpur), Madrassa Qasim-ul-Uloom( Muradabad), famous madaris of Deobandi faction is a settled fact. Their role became both effective and emphatic with the passage of time when they sided with the All India Muslim League. Their role and services in this historic episode is the focus of the study in hand. Keywords: Deoband, Aligarh Movement, Khilafat, Muslim League, Congress Ulama in Politics: Retrospect: Besides performing their religious obligations, the religious ulema also took part in the War of Freedom 1857, similar to the other Indians, and it was only due to their active participation that the movement became in line and determined. These ulema used the pen and sword to fight against the British and it is also a fact that ordinary causes of 1857 War were blazed by these ulema. Mian Muhammad Shafi writes: Who says that the fire lit by Sayyid Ahmad was extinguished or it had cooled down? These were the people who encouraged Muslims and the Hindus to fight against the British in 1857. -

Bangladesh Decision – 28th July 2018 Today on 28th July 2018 under the guidance of the Ulama of Bangladesh, the elders of the effort and the government of Bangladesh, approximately 600,000 to 700,000 people gathered in Dhaka. The following six matters were agreed: 1) Jamhoor Ulama are unanimous that because of three reasons, following Moulana Muhammad Saad Kandhlawi is not permissible. a) Incorrect and personalised interpretations of the Quran and Hadith. b) To enhance the importance of the effort of Dawah, resorting to degrading other efforts of Deen. c) Moving away from the methodology of the previous three elders; Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyas (R), Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Yusuf (R) and Hazrat Moulana Inamul Hasan (R). 2) The disregard of Moulana Muhammad Saad of the Shura methodology adopted by Hazrat Moulana Inamul Hasan (R) and his insistence upon being Amir. This will not be accepted in Kakrail in any form. 3) Darul Uloom Deoband’s fear that Moulana Muhammad Saad has moved away from the ideology of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah and has resorted to create another group. Therefore, at the moment it is strongly advised that no Bangladeshi Jamat etc travels to Nizamuddin. Similarly, no Jamat from Nizamuddin will be allowed a route in any area of Bangladesh. 4) The effort of Dawah has gained acceptance as per the methodology adopted by the previous three elders. Therefore, this effort will continue on this methodology and under the guidance of the elders of Deoband. No new methodology will be adopted. Kajrail, Tongi an all other Marakiz will work accordingly only. -

Splinter Terrorist Groups: Emerging Trends of Terrorism in Bangladesh
SPLINTER TERRORIST GROUPS: EMERGING TRENDS OF TERRORISM IN BANGLADESH Innovative new tactics have always been a tool of survival or expansion for terrorist www.bipss.org.bd groups all over the world. Activities of extremist/ terrorist groups in Bangladesh now appear to be following a new pattern. It seems that the older strategy of bigger group, rapid expansion of network and spectacular terrorist acts to capture immediate media and public attention has been abandoned for the time being due to its failure. Such tactics have also been excluded keeping in mind the strong reaction from the security apparatus and the negative public sentiments towards terrorism. The rise of rather smaller groups in disguise of various activities gives a new impression about the emerging trend. Police in Bangladesh recently unearthed activities of a small group named ‘Ansarullah Bangla Team’ (Volunteer of Allah Bangla Team). Their leader Mohammad Jasimuddin Rahmani was arrested with 30 of his followers on 15th August 2013. On the previous day police recovered huge volume of Jihadist literature, documents and list of persons to be killed through terror attacks. Similar recoveries along with some small arms were made on 24th of the same month in Barisal districts.Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) predicted, in its previous publication,this emergence of splinter extremist/ terrorist groups. Background and Context Extremist/ terrorist phenomenon in Bangladesh came hand in hand with increased terrorist activities in the international arena. Home grown but internationally linked groups like JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkatul Jihad Al Islami – Bangladesh (HUJI-B) and others came to being in Bangladesh emerged in the late nineties and the early years of ther 21st century. -

Feminist Dissent Binary Framings, Islam and Struggle for Women’s Empowerment in Bangladesh Sohela Nazneen* Address *Correspondence: [[email protected]] Abstract In this paper, I investigate how binary framings of women’s identity have influenced struggles for women’s rights and the interpretations of the relationship between Islam and women’s empowerment in Bangladesh. These binary framings position women at opposite ends by dividing them between ‘Muslim/religious/moral/authentic/traditional’ or ‘Bengali/ secular/immoral/Westernised/ modern’. I trace the particular genealogies of these binary constructs which emerged during specific historical junctures and are influenced by the shifts in regional and international Peer review: This article politics. April 30, 2015 Political Polarization and Religious Extremism in Bangladesh Prepared statement by Alyssa Ayres Senior Fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia Council on Foreign Relations Before the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific United States House of Representatives 1st Session, 114th Congress Hearing on “Bangladesh’s Fracture: Political and Religious Extremism” Chairman Salmon, Ranking Member Sherman, and Members of the Subcommittee, Thank you very much for the invitation to appear before you on the critically important issue of political and religious extremism in Bangladesh. I am honored to be part of this distinguished panel, and am grateful that you have chosen to focus on this significant country, one that remains relatively under-studied. Bangladesh has been in the news for terrible reasons recently. On March 30 a young blogger, Washiqur Rahman, was hacked to death in Bangladesh's capital city, Dhaka. That attack came on the heels of a similar murder the month before: another blogger, an American citizen named Avijit Roy, was stabbed and hacked to death February 26 as he left the Dhaka book fair. Two years earlier, in 2013, a blogger named Ahmed Rajib Haider was attacked in Dhaka and hacked to death with machetes. All three were targeted by radical Islamists for holding atheist views and writing about them openly. As I have argued elsewhere, these assasinations have opened a new front between the values of a syncretic, secular, humanistic Bangladeshi culture against a rigid worldview incapable of allowing difference to coexist. These murders have been all the more troubling given Bangladesh’s comparative moderation and its well-known economic and development successes. -

There are 280,000 internally displaced people in CHT by January 2015. 2001 Postelection violence forces nearly 200,000 Hindus to flee or emigrate to India. 2004 Islamist group Huji-B attacks Awami League (AL) rally, killing 24 and injuring 2001 200, including former prime minister Catholic church bombing kills nine and Sheikh Hasina. injures 20. Religious minorities are increasingly targeted by violent Islamist groups. 2007 Military coup. Over 52,000 are arrested and 29 killed by law enforcement in the first month of the ensuing state of emergency. 2013 BNP boycotts tenth parliamentary elections, leading to armed violence, attacks on minorities, and hundreds of dead and 2008 injured. Ninth parliamentary elections, after nearly two years of military-backed caretaker government. 2013 Communal attacks on Hindu houses and shops follow death sentence for Islamist war 2014 criminal. Islamist party leader Abdul Quader Mollah executed for crimes during war 2013 of independence. Large-scale protests, First murders of secular bloggers by Islamic violence, and bombings ensue. -

Combating Terrorism Center at West Point Occasional Paper Series Shiism and Sectarian Conflict in Pakistan Identity Politics, Iranian Influence, and Tit-for-Tat Violence Hassan Abbas September 22, 2010 1 2 Preface As the first decade of the 21st century nears its end, issues surrounding militancy among the Shi‛a community in the Shi‛a heartland and beyond continue to occupy scholars and policymakers. During the past year, Iran has continued its efforts to extend its influence abroad by strengthening strategic ties with key players in international affairs, including Brazil and Turkey. Iran also continues to defy the international community through its tenacious pursuit of a nuclear program. The Lebanese Shi‛a militant group Hizballah, meanwhile, persists in its efforts to expand its regional role while stockpiling ever more advanced weapons. Sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shi‛a has escalated in places like Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain, and not least, Pakistan. As a hotbed of violent extremism, Pakistan, along with its Afghan neighbor, has lately received unprecedented amounts of attention among academics and policymakers alike. While the vast majority of contemporary analysis on Pakistan focuses on Sunni extremist groups such as the Pakistani Taliban or the Haqqani Network—arguably the main threat to domestic and regional security emanating from within Pakistan’s border—sectarian tensions in this country have attracted relatively little scholarship to date. The attempts by the British to inculcate modernism in Indian societies was taken up by the Muslims as a political and cultural challenge. Unlike the Muslim ideologues such as Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817-18), who launched Aligarh Movement adopting progressive and loyalist approach, the exponent Deoband Movement showed militant resistance towards British imperialism and by sticking to their religious dogmas attempted to reform the society along with orthodox lines. Yet, they afterwards modernized their educational institutions which appeared to be one of the dominant set of Islam and made seminary second largest religious educational institution in the Muslim World. -
