I would like to sincerely thank all my wonderful Family, Friends, and Neighbours who have sent me cards, messages, flowers and gifts during my illness.

Special thanks to my wonderful Husband, Sister, & next-door Neighbour who have done so much for me.

You have all kept me positive and cheered me, especially now I am on the road to recovery.

My best wishes to all

Thankyou

On behalf of the family, and myself, we cannot find the words to thank you wonderful people, who came and supported us at our lovely Sybil’s funeral. The genuine affection for our lovely lady was there for all to see. Thank you all, many times over.

Common Courtesy

Last Friday, 3 pensioners got on the bus at Hawkesbury; what was good was the fact the bus was virtually full and by the time everyone got on at Hawkesbury there was standing room only, and Yes, all 3 had to stand all the way to Yate.

Not one person offered a seat. There were at least 6 teenagers - of which 2 got on at Hawkesbury with their mother - and a number of 8 - 12 year olds.

I find it incredulous that:

1. Just out of common politeness the teenagers could have offered a seat and

2. That the Mothers didn't tell the children to stand (or sit on their laps) for the Oldies. Would they have let a pregnant lady stand too ??? Surely to goodness everyone knows you offer a seat to a Pensioner or an Expectant Lady......

p.s. I am not one of the 3 !!! but was told about this and could not believe my ears - hence this letter.

For those of you not on Facebook (that includes me) or on WhatsApp, Andrew and I would like to send out a HUGE thank you to all of you who turned out on Wednesday evening (12th Sept) to help us look for our rescued cocker, Ruby, who had been spooked by her flexi lead and run off trying to escape it. I know that there were people still out looking at 11pm and again at the break of dawn the next morning. Thankfully she was found safe and sound, some 12 hours later, by Richard Marshall in the ditch next to Coles’ farm. She was cold, tired and hungry but none the worse for wear. I wish I could say the same for Andrew and I who had not slept a wink all night.

To round off her adventures, Ruby came 2nd in the ‘rescue’ category at Hawkesbury’s recent dog show just 3 days later. If there had been a category for ‘dog with the most likes on FaceBook’, we think she just might have come first. After her escapades, her current total is 100 likes. LOL!

The people in this village never cease to amaze me. Whenever there is someone in need the villagers always come up trumps. This is a great place to live and we should all be mindful of just how selfless and supportive our neighbours are. Suzanne and Andrew Flye

I would like to introduce myself as the new Headteacher at Hawkesbury Primary School. I am delighted to have joined the team and cannot wait to get stuck into the new role. It is clear to see already that this is a wonderful place for the children in the village and beyond to grow and learn. Over the past 3 years I have been Headteacher at nearby Primary School; both schools are very similar in size and both welcome children from smaller village communities so I am aware of the unique nature of a village school. Now that I am a member of staff at both schools, I am very keen to encourage the staff and children to work together. We will be thinking of ways that we can do this throughout the year to make both of these excellent schools even better places to be. I look forward to continuing to work alongside the local community over the next year and to meeting many of you in due course. If you would like to get involved in the life of the school please do come and speak to us; we are often looking out for volunteers to work with the children and also for any gover- nors who have the right skill set to work with the school leadership team. Please note: our open day for children starting in Reception in 2019 will take place on Tuesday 20th November. If you have a child who is due to start school next September, please do contact the school office – we would be very pleased to meet you. Mike Riches Headteacher

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY!

YOUTH DRAMA WORKSHOPS for young people from Y7 upwards - 13/14 October 2018

Hawkesbury Theatrical Group is staging a production called ‘Trinity Road School Reunion’ on 30th November and 1 December in the Village Hall. There is an opportunity for young people to join in the production through workshops led by Anne Weaver on Saturday 13 October from 10 – 4pm (Methodist School Room) and Sunday 14 October (Village Hall) from 10am – 1pm.

We will be workshopping dialogue and scripts and part of this scene will be built round the songs of ‘Grease’, as performed at auditions by the adult characters when they were at school in the 1970s. Should be fun! For casting and staging purposes it will be important for you to be free to attend both these sessions.

We would be pleased to hear from any young musicians who could provide some backing on guitar or keyboard for the youth drama scene at the next production. The tunes are from ‘Grease’, but the music does not need to be polished or complicated as the scene is based on a school audition for the musical. We would need you for the dress rehearsal on Sunday November 25th and for the initial workshop on Sunday 14th October when the scene is to be created. It will be fun to create a “flashback scene” set in the seventies when live music was the thing rather than backing tracks! It will also be a great opportunity for local musical talent to be heard and appreciated.

If you would like to join us please contact Anne Weaver on 01666 890573 or email her on [email protected] Page 12 Hawkesbury Parish News

Hawkesbury Upton's "Community Land Trust (CLT)"

AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

A quick update, following our article in August which outlined the overall value and principles of a CLT for Hawkesbury Upton.

Following a successful application for start-up funding and support from the National CLT Network, our informal Steering Group met on the 11th September with Ian Crawley (a local CLT consultant, funded by of the National CLT Network) to kick off this initiative.

The principle objectives were (a) for Ian to review Hawkesbury Upton's community activities over recent years to enable him to recommend to the National CLT Network whether they should continue to support and help fund the development of the CLT, and (2) for our informal Steering Group to better understand its immediate priorities.

As a result of this meeting the informal Steering Group will be focussing on making sure everyone in our community is aware of what we want to achieve with the CLT. CLTs are democratic, controlled by local people for the benefit of the whole community, so everyone must have the opportunity to have their say and become involved in any way they wish.

Another outcome which emerged from the meeting was surprising, and demonstrates the potential value of a CLT. The Park Street development (which has recently been approved - for 21 houses, including 7 affordable homes) was justified on the back of Hawkesbury Parish's Affordable Housing Needs Survey, which identified a local need for 10 affordable homes. However, despite the whole development being justified on this local need, it transpires that local people will not necessarily have priority over the Park Street affordable homes which will simply be allocated to those in South Gloucestershire with the greatest need. Hence, despite the Park Street development delivering 7 affordable homes, Hawkesbury Upton still requires an additional 10 affordable homes to meet its local need.

A CLT will ensure all affordable homes are for local people.

As we head further into Autumn, the nights are shortening, leaves falling on to the outfield once more, cricket whites have their final wash of the season and the kit bags are safely packed away. We look back at the season gone and look ahead to the season to come.

Both of the Hawkesbury sides had a strong finish to the season. Both first XI and 2nd XI teams won their final matches of the season holding their place in their respective leagues, no promotion this year but no relegation either. We look forward to striding into a new season next year, now that both teams have settled into new leagues, after last year’s promotions.

The First XI finished 6th (mid table) having won 7 of their 17 matches. The 2nd XI finished 6th (Mid ta- ble) having won 9 of their 17 matches.

Thank you to all who attended our Youth Presentation and Family Fun Day on September 8th, we had a fantastic day and raised some much-needed funds - especially with end of season pitch preparations and damage caused by the break in during August. Do keep an eye out for future fundraising events or join our 300 club by emailing [email protected]

TUNING IN

The finishing touch required for our new extension was a little background music. My tastes in music are eclectic, but when I’m reading or writing, I prefer to listen to something without words. I needed a machine to do justice to classical music.

Going to John Lewis to buy a modest CD player to fit the space, I quickly discovered it’s nigh impossible to buy a stand-alone CD player. All seem to come with a DAB radio attached.

While awaiting my turn for the assistant, as I browsed the machines in the lower price bracket, I couldn’t help but eavesdrop on the elderly couple the young man was serving. For them, money was clearly no object: they were inspecting the product range of a brand fancy enough to have its own display area. I assumed they must have a more discerning musical ear than mine. Not so. “Please may we try it on BBC Radio 4?” asked the elderly lady.

Once they’d been despatched with their purchase, when the assistant came to help me. I said to him, “Only in John Lewis would a customer ask to test your best HiFi on Radio 4.”

The couple must have been working their way round the department, because the two models I’d been looking at were also tuned to Radio 4. Stephen Fry was in full flow on them both. “Perhaps you should have him playing on a continuous loop,” I suggested. “His velvet tones would sell any sound system more easily.”

The assistant smiled conspiratorially. And almost before I knew it, he was ringing up my sale on the till. www.authordebbieyoung.com

There will be a preliminary meeting to draw teams of 4 for this year's league in The Beaufort on Sun- day 21st October at 8.00pm. The teams then remain as drawn for the rest of the season. This gives a variety of people a chance of winning, plus it is a good way to get to know new people!

HAWKESBURY VOLUNTEER TRANSPORT GROUP

Remember

H.V.T. is not only for holders of a bus pass but exists to help anyone in the village who has a medical appointment of any kind and has transport worries. Whereas bus pass holders are partly subsidised by the local authority, others pay 40p per mile which when balanced against taxi fares comes out well. We travel as far as Cheltenham and need a few days notice to ensure we can meet your needs.

Diamond cards

Almost 30% of the villagers who are registered with H.V.T have not given us recent details of their Diamond cards. We need the expiry date and last 8 digits of the code number, so if you fall into the aforementioned group please call Alan Shewry or we will be unable to offer subsidised medical journeys and full price will need to be paid.

Hawkesbury Guides would like to say a very big thank you to Marlene Payne who donated her birthday money to us - £220! We have put this towards subsidising the new Guide Hand- books and Badge Books (costing parents £5 instead of £11.50!) as well as subsidising our trip to Wotton Pantomime in January. We are very grateful to you.

Thank you also to The Summer Skittles League, via Mick Bendeaux, who very kindly gave us £100. We’ve used the money to buy all the new programme work sheets and will also get the girls’ Anniver- sary badges.

Just when you wonder how you’ll do it, help comes your way!

We’re very much looking forward to The Big Gig this month at Wembley SSE Arena-8/10 acts per- forming to 10,000 Girl Guides-we’ll tell you all about it next month.

It was nice to have other WI’s in the Sodbury Vale Group joining us in competing for The Perpetual Challenge Shield for Women’s Institutes, and along with WI, producing such special tables on the theme of Alice in Wonderland, which this year was won by , with Hawkesbury & Horton coming second and Chipping Sodbury Morning WI in third place.

A big thank you also to Louise Roberts who produced the photo opportunity board based on the Plastic Soup campaign.

Our speaker for the September meeting was Sandra Bateman on Dispelling the Myths of the Brontes. In her researches Sandra uncovered a rich, warm family background, not the austere one often portrayed, and this encouraged the children, Charlotte, Emily and Anne to read widely, make up plays, and explore freely the moors around them, along with brother Branwell. Toy soldiers were given names like the Duke of Wellington, a personage of the age, and their books were inspired by real life experiences. A disastrous choice of boarding school had contributed to the earlier deaths of their two elder sisters, and had a profound effect on the younger ones too. But under the pseudonyms Ellis, Acton and Currer Bell the three sisters published masterpieces enjoyed to this day.

A vote of thanks was given by Jennifer Oldershaw for a wonderful talk that made you feel you were really there with the family.

Competition for Favourite Book and Why, was won by Lynn Edwards. Stig of the Dump a great children’s book had a profound impact on her for several reasons. “It made me realise that rubbish could be reused. I have always been interested in recycling ever since.” This is an issue very much in the public domain today.

Flower of the month was won by Alison Barnett with a Michaelmas Daisy.

You are all very welcome. Harvest Time Mr. Spurgeon tells of a visit he made to a public house in Nottingham, to see the landlord's wife who was dying, and found her rejoicing in the Saviour's love. He asked her how she found Christ. "Reading that," she replied. Mr. Spurgeon looked at the paper and discovered that it was part of an American newspaper containing an extract from a sermon preached in London. He asked where she found the paper, and she said it was wrapped round a parcel sent from Australia. Think how that message of salvation was ordained to travel from London to America, then to Australia, and then back to , on a piece of paper to a needy soul in Nottingham. Yes, think of the blessing that piece of paper contained though the sender may not have had any purpose in view, and then think of the blessing the tracts and papers must be that are sown and watered with tears in behalf of needy souls by the publishers and the distributors. "Sown in the darkness, or sown in the light, sown in our weakness, or sown in our might; gathered in time or eternity, Sure, ah, sure will the harvest be." No one is too weak nor too insufficient to have a share in the sowing. Loving hearts and willing hands are all that is required. moreillustrations.com In Genesis 8 :22 we read. "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." C.F Stanley writes. Inglestone & Hawkesbury Commons - Seed Enhancement

Soon you will see the commencement of our seed enhancement works on Inglestone and Hawkes- bury Commons.

The seed enhancement works are part of the Higher Level Stewardship agreement with Natural Eng- land and will hopefully improve the site in the long term for wildlife by creating more species rich areas of grassland.

This enhancement work can look quite drastic but the process is necessary to give the wildflower seed the best chance of establishing in a dense grass sward. The process involves removing as much vegetative growth as possible, creating bare soil patches, ideally up to 50% bare soil across the whole of the improvement site. Specially selected wildflower seed is then sown directly onto the soil and rolled to help improve seed/soil con- tact.

These sites may need some weed control during their first growing sea- son and will need successive cut & collects each year around July to Au- gust, with possible topping up of seed until we have an established wild- flower meadow.

One species that we hope will improve the efforts of our wildflower meadows in establishing is Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor). Yellow rattle is an attractive, semi-parasitic, grassland annual. If it successfully establishes itself, it will take some of the nutrients from the roots of neighbouring grasses, reducing grass growth by up to 50%. Helping to reduce the vigour of grasses, it gives the slower growing wildflowers a chance to establish, flower and seed. Page 28 Hawkesbury Parish News CALLING LOCAL WRITERS! If you enjoy writing short stories, please do consider entering the autumn Stroud Short Stories competition. Stories can be on any subject and up to 1500 words long. Entry is free, and each writer may enter up to two stories. Stroud Short Stories is a twice-yearly spoken word event for all writers with a Gloucestershire connection. That includes South Gloucestershire, by the way, so if you live or work in the parish of Hawkesbury, you’re eligible. The judges are award-winning writer John Holland, who also chairs the short story readings at Hawkesbury Upton Literature Festival each year, plus one other writer. This autumn the second judge will be Hawkes- bury’s own Debbie Young, who has also judged two previous SSS competitions. Together the judges choose their ten great stories and invite the authors of those stories to read them to a friendly audience in Stroud at a special evening event. This autumn, the Stroud Short Stories evening will be held on Sunday 11th November as part of the Stroud Book Festival. The authors will also have the option of having their story included in a printed anthology. To ensure the judging process is objective, the judges do not know who has written any of the stories until after they’ve chosen the final ten stories. You’ll find full details of how to enter at www.stroudshortstories.blogspot.com. The deadline for entries is Sunday 14th October. Many aspiring authors have had their first break at Stroud Short Stories, so don’t be shy! All entries will be very welcome. The winter nights are drawing in and that can only mean one thing; it’s only a few weeks until Bonfire Night!

This event has always been something that we have tried to run for the village and by the village, to do this we need your help. There are many ways to get involved, we need volunteers during the day to set up and build the bonfire, and at the event to marshal, serve drinks, collect donations etc. If you can spare an hour (or few) to help, please get in touch.

If you have a good cause or group that you would like to raise funds for, we have various opportunities available. Please get in contact if you would like to run; the BBQ, pasties, soup and a roll, glow sticks, cakes, or anything else you think may be exciting to have at bonfire night. Please let us know as soon as possible.

We welcome unwanted wood from Saturday the 20th of October to the hard-standing area behind the village hall at the recreation ground. Please do not leave green wood or shrubs as it doesn’t burn well and we can’t dispose of this ourselves.

We can only put on such a brilliant display if people show their support and appreciation through donations. Please place your donations in the boxes in the shop, with Deb Neame or Emma Edwards, or in donation buckets on the night!

If you’d like to get involved, contact Deb Neame or Jon Boyle on 232979, Emma and Mike Edwards on 238780, Andy Musty on 238118, or email [email protected]
