Military History Anniversaries 16 thru 30 June Events in History over the next 15 day period that had U.S. military involvement or impacted in some way on U.S military operations or American interests Jun 16 1832 – Native Americans: Battle of Burr Oak Grove » The Battle is either of two minor battles, or skirmishes, fought during the Black Hawk War in U.S. state of Illinois, in present-day Stephenson County at and near Kellogg's Grove. In the first skirmish, also known as the Battle of Burr Oak Grove, on 16 JUN, Illinois militia forces fought against a band of at least 80 Native Americans. During the battle three militia men under the command of Adam W. Snyder were killed in action. The second battle occurred nine days later when a larger Sauk and Fox band, under the command of Black Hawk, attacked Major John Dement's detachment and killed five militia men. The second battle is known for playing a role in Abraham Lincoln's short career in the Illinois militia. He was part of a relief company sent to the grove on 26 JUN and he helped bury the dead. He made a statement about the incident years later which was recollected in Carl Sandburg's writing, among others. Sources conflict about who actually won the battle; it has been called a "rout" for both sides. The battle was the last on Illinois soil during the Black Hawk War. Jun 16 1861 – Civil War: Battle of Secessionville » A Union attempt to capture Charleston, South Carolina, is thwarted when the Confederates turn back an attack at Secessionville, just south of the city on James Island.

BARGE » 00 CHICAGO 1918 Gift Author t\ PREFACE This is not an effort to write a history of any man or any locality. The sole purpose of the work is the collec- tion and preservation of the scarce and almost inaccessi- ble evidence of some of the men and events prominent in the early days of Lee County. It was not prepared to sustain any theory or tradition, but every effort within my power has been made to leani all the facts concerning these men and events and state them correctly. Some old traditions have been shattered, but they were not sustained by the facts, and many of them had no foun- dation except the loose talk of persons who were ignorant of the matters of which they spoke. Some of my old beliefs, held and cherished since early cliildliood, have been dispelled, but they were founded upon misinforma- tion. Reference is made to some public record, report or document whenever one could be found. When such evi- dence could not be had, my resort was to newspapers, pri- vate letters or records or books written or published about that time, in the belief that such contemporaneous statements are more likely to be free from error than those made years afterwards. In some instances the private records and the public records differ, and the lat- ter are followed, the entries being contemporaneous with the event.

  • Autobiography of Ma-Ka-Tai-Me- She-Kia-Kiak, Or Black Hawk
AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MA-KA-TAI-ME- SHE-KIA-KIAK, OR BLACK HAWK, By Black Hawk AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF BLACK HAWK. I was born at the Sac village, on Rock river, in the year 1767, and am now in my 67th year. My great grandfather, Nanamakee, or Thunder, according to the tradition given me by my father, Pyesa, was born in the vicinity of Montreal, Canada, where the Great Spirit first placed the Sac nation, and inspired him with a belief that, at the end of four years he should see a white man, who would be to him a father. Consequently he blacked his face, and eat but once a day, just as the sun was going down, for three years, and continued dreaming, throughout all this time whenever he slept. When the Great Spirit again appeared to him, and told him that, at the end of one year more, he should meet his father, and directed him to start seven days before its expiration, and take with him his two brothers, Namah, or Sturgeon, and Paukahummawa, or Sunfish, and travel in a direction to the left of sun-rising. After pursuing this course for five days, he sent out his two brothers to listen if they could hear a noise, and if so, to fasten some grass to the end of a pole, erect it, pointing in the direction of the sound, and then return to him. Early next morning they returned, and reported that they had heard sounds which appeared near at hand, and that they had fulfilled his order.
