VOINCHET3 RÉSUMÉ De nouvelles études morphostratigraphiques et biostratigraphiques ainsi que des datations ont été entreprises sur le célèbre dépôt de tuf cal- caire de La Celle-sur-Seine afin d’obtenir une reconstruction détaillée des successions paléoenvironnementales et climatiques enregistrées dans cette formation interglaciaire du Pléistocène moyen. L’approche développée a privilégié l’aspect pluridisciplinaire afin d’exploiter la richesse pa- léontologique du gisement, de mieux appréhender ses caractères morphostratigraphiques et de préciser sa position chronologique. Les premiers résultats obtenus à partir des études malacologiques montrent que le dépôt, composé de tufs et de niveaux limono-argileux, s’est construit en progradant le long du versant. Ainsi l’épaisseur totale de la formation atteint près de 9 mètres. Les malacofaunes permettent de re- constituer une évolution paléoenvironnementale correspondant au début puis à l’optimum d’une phase climatique interglaciaire. Les niveaux som- mitaux sont, eux, caractérisés par un net recul de la couverture forestière. La création de nouveaux profils stratigraphiques a permis la découverte dans un niveau de limon gris tufacé d’une abondante faune de mam- mifères accompagnée par quelques silex taillés. Cet horizon appartient à la malacozone la plus riche en taxons thermophiles qui est interprétée comme la phase optimum de l’Interglaciaire. -

Knowledge of present-day communities and ecosystems resembling those reconstructed from the fossil record can help improve our understanding of historical distribution patterns and species composition of past communities. Here, we use a unique data set of 570 plots explored for vascular plant and 315 for land-snail assemblages located along a 650-km-long transect running across a steep climatic gradient in the Russian Altai Mountains and their foothills in southern Siberia. We analysed climatic and habitat requirements of modern populations for eight land-snail and 16 vascular plant species that are considered characteristic of the full-glacial environment of central Europe based on (i) fossil evidence from loess deposits (snails) or (ii) refugial patterns of their modern distribu- tions (plants). The analysis yielded consistent predictions of the full-glacial central European climate derived from both snail and plant populations. We found that the distribution of these 24 species was limited to the areas with mean annual temperature varying from À6.7 to 3.4 °C (median À2.5 °C) and with total annual precipitation vary- ing from 137 to 593 mm (median 283 mm). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Vertigo botanicorum sp. nov. is described from the Russian Altai Mountains. The species was recorded in 8 out of 118 study sites and totally 21 live individuals and 15 empty shells were collected. It is a medium-sized Vertigo species living in various tall-forb meadows, shrubby and forest habitats; avoiding only dry and strictly open sites. Mostly it was found in rather acidic sites of higher altitudes (above 1300 m a.s.l.). Key words: Vertigo, terrestrial microgastropods, new species, southern Siberia, distribution, ecology Introduction The terrestrial snail genus Vertigo O.F. Müller, 1774 includes approximately 70 described living species distributed mainly throughout the Holarctic, with the global diversity centre of the genus in North America (see Nekola & Coles 2010) and with ca. 30 species distributed in Eurasia (Pokryszko 2003; von Proschwitz 2007; Pokryszko et al. 2009; Sysoev & Schileyko 2009). The members of this genus have ovoid to cylindrical shells that generally range between 1.5 and 3 mm in height and have a rounded aperture with 0–9 lamellae at maturity. -

Animal Biodiversity and Conservation, 41.1: 109–115, Doi: https://doi.org/10.32800/abc.2018.41.0109 Abstract The light–dark cycle of Desmoulin’s whorl snail Vertigo moulinsiana Dupuy, 1849 (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Vertiginidae) and its activity patterns at different temperatures. Vertigo moulinsiana is a minute land snail spe- cies which requires high humidity conditions and is found in wet, temporarily inundated habitats. The species is listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species under the VU (vulnerable) category and is considered a high conservation priority. It is also mentioned in Annex II of the EU Habitat Directive, which imposes the obligation to monitor the species in member countries. The monitoring of V. moulinsiana is based on counting individuals attached to plants in the field, and thus any results may only be properly evaluated when the behavior of the species is understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the light–dark cycle of both adults and juveniles within the species as well as to compare activity patterns of both age groups in dark conditions in tem- peratures of 6 ºC and 21 ºC. Observations were carried out under laboratory conditions, at a high and constant humidity (humidity was at or nearly 100 %). -

Bringing Bugs back to LIFE: action for threatened invertebrates Background notes prepared by Neemo LIFE team Aim of the meeting Since 1992 the LIFE programme has supported many projects which benefit invertebrates listed in Annex II and Annex IV of the Habitats Directive. In 2011 a LIFE platform meeting on terrestrial invertebrates was held in the UK to share experience. An immediate outcome of the meeting was the opening up of the LIFE programme to species listed in the IUCN Red Lists of threatened species.1 Now, it is time to review how well LIFE has targeted actions for threatened invertebrates and to consider what more could the programme do to support these sometimes forgotten species groups. As well as the IUCN European Red Lists of butterflies, dragonflies and saproxylic beetles discussed at the first platform this second meeting will also consider all other IUCN European Red Lists and IUCN Red Lists and other relevant initiatives such as the European Pollinators Initiative. The focus will be on terrestrial invertebrates. The LIFE platform meeting will address the following questions: What type of projects do we need to improve the conservation status of Habitats Directive and IUCN Red List threatened invertebrates? What is the best way to target the overlooked groups? How can we address the ecological, taxonomic and biogeographical knowledge gaps? Would a focus on umbrella species improve the overall situation for invertebrates? Are habitat restoration projects adequately targeting invertebrate species? Can invertebrate assemblages be used as an indicator of habitat quality? What features of landscape scale approaches specifically address the needs of invertebrates? How do we plan for long-term monitoring? The discussions and outcomes of the meeting will be considered by the European Commission and EASME in developing ideas for the next LIFE Regulation.
