Realism Realism 1861- 1914: An artistic movement begun in 19th century France. Artists and writers strove for detailed realistic and factual description. They tried to represent events and social conditions as they actually are, without idealization. This form of literature believes in fidelity to actuality in its representation. Realism is about recreating life in literature. Realism arose as an opposing idea to Idealism and Nominalism. Idealism is the approach to literature of writing about everything in its ideal from. Nominalism believes that ideas are only names and have no practical application. Realism focused on the truthful treatment of the common, average, everyday life. Realism focuses on the immediate, the here and now, the specific actions and their verifiable consequences. Realism seeks a one-to-one relationship between representation and the subject. This form is also known as mimesis. Realists are concerned with the effect of the work on their reader and the reader's life, a pragmatic view. Pragmatism requires the reading of a work to have some verifiable outcome for the reader that will lead to a better life for the reader. This lends an ethical tendency to Realism while focusing on common actions and minor catastrophes of middle class society. Realism aims to interpret the actualities of any aspect of life, free from subjective prejudice, idealism, or romantic color. It is in direct opposition to concerns of the unusual, the basis of Romanticism. Stresses the real over the fantastic. Seeks to treat the commonplace truthfully and used characters from everyday life. This emphasis was brought on by societal changes such as the aftermath of the Civil War in the United States and the emergence of Darwin's Theory of Evolution and its effect upon biblical interpretation. -

T HESAVRVS BOLETÍN DEL INSTITUTO CARO Y CUERVO TOMO XXX Mayo-Agosto 1975 NÚMERO 2 PROBLEMS OF THE BAROQUE IN 1975 The following article does not try to continué the "Cri- tical survey of the Baroque theories" which I presented in this periodical IV (1948), 461-491, since this survey actually was continued in my book Estudios sobre el Barroco (Madrid, Gre- dos 1966, second edition 1973). Today I am rather interested in actual problems generally recognized as central, and in the attempt at their Solutions. There is agreement now on the fact that the transition from Renaissance to Baroque is such a slow process that it filis a whole period (roughly 1520 to 1600) which art historians cali Mannerism. One tried there- fore first to find criteria for the distinction of these two histo- rical phaenomena, Mannerism and Baroque, and to explain their fundamental differences and their possible overlappings. The second problem was, how the thus chronologically new- ly fixed Baroque fades out into something new which some believe to be the Classicism (particularly in France), which others, like the art historians, believe to be the Rococó. The latter still very debated concept supposes in retrospect a kind of coincidence between Classicism and Baroque. Furthermore, envisioning all this from a European and comparative view- point supposes time lags between the domination of a style trend in different countries, supposes the concept of dying and 210 HELMUT HATZFELD BICC, XXX, 1975 upcoming literatures, supposes the reckoning with the un- settled question of originis, and most of all, the importance of the psychological and sociological background which can- not be everywhere the same. -

The Exhibit at Palazzo Strozzi “Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino
Issue no. 18 - April 2014 CHAMPIONS OF THE “MODERN MANNER” The exhibit at Palazzo Strozzi “Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. Diverging Paths of Mannerism”, points out the different vocations of the two great artist of the Cinquecento, both trained under Andrea del Sarto. Palazzo Strozzi will be hosting from March 8 to July 20, 2014 a major exhibition entitled Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. Diverging Paths of Mannerism. The exhibit is devoted to these two painters, the most original and unconventional adepts of the innovative interpretive motif in the season of the Italian Cinquecento named “modern manner” by Vasari. Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino both were born in 1494; Pontormo in Florence and Rosso in nearby Empoli, Tuscany. They trained under Andrea del Sarto. Despite their similarities, the two artists, as the title of the exhibition suggests, exhibited strongly independent artistic approaches. They were “twins”, but hardly identical. Issue no. 18 -April 2014 PONTORMO ACCORDING TO BILL VIOLA The exhibit at Palazzo Strozzi includes American artist Bill Viola’s video installation “The Greeting”, a intensely poetic interpretation of The Visitation by Jacopo Carrucci Through video art and the technique of slow motion, Bill Viola’s richly poetic vision of Pontormo’s painting “Visitazione” brings to the fore the happiness of the two women at their coming together, representing with the same—yet different—poetic sensitivity, the vibrancy achieved by Pontormo, but with a vital, so to speak carnal immediacy of the sense of life, “translated” into the here-and- now of the present. -

1 “Finding a place for beauty and aesthetics in a Christian worldview” Erik Schmidt Gonzaga University March 31, 2006 1. Introduction The past one hundred years have proven a hostile environment for questions of beauty and aesthetics. Philosophy has gone from a time when major figures in philosophy, including Hume, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche, devoted a considerable amount of attention to questions of aesthetics, to a discipline in which a few philosophers discuss a fragmented set of issues and questions grouped under the broad label of the philosophy of art. In the art-world, meanwhile we have moved from a time when artists attempted to embody balance, proportion and order to an era characterized by artists like Cy Twombly, whose work according one of his defenders manifests, “The implicit hand of a child in agony, a picture of manual impotence, of wanting to do well, but lacking the ability to do so.”[1] There is, of course, much to recommend about the current era in art and philosophy but my goal this afternoon is to take a closer look at the decline of discussions about aesthetics and beauty in philosophy and to defend the claim that questions about aesthetics and beauty should play a more important role in efforts file:///F|/Finding%20a%20place%20for%20art%20and%20beauty.htm (1 of 21) [4/13/2006 9:27:54 AM] 1 to articulate and defend a Christian worldview. Perhaps the best place to start is to say something about what I mean by aesthetics. To get a handle on the term we need to turn to David Hume. -
The Strange Art of 16Th –Century Italy
The Strange Art of 16th –century Italy Some thoughts before we start. This course is going to use a seminar format. Each of you will be responsible for an artist. You will be giving reports on- site as we progress, in as close to chronological order as logistics permit. At the end of the course each of you will do a Power Point presentation which will cover the works you treated on-site by fitting them into the rest of the artist’s oeuvre and the historical context.. The readings: You will take home a Frederick Hartt textbook, History of Italian Renaissance Art. For the first part of the course this will be your main background source. For sculpture you will have photocopies of some chapters from Roberta Olsen’s book on Italian Renaissance sculpture. I had you buy Walter Friedlaender’s Mannerism and Anti-Mannerism in Italian Painting, first published in 1925. While recent scholarship does not agree with his whole thesis, many of his observations are still valid about the main changes at the beginning and the end of the 16th century. In addition there will be some articles copied from art history periodicals and a few provided in digital format which you can read on the computer. Each of you will be doing other reading on your individual artists. A major goal of the course will be to see how sixteenth-century art depends on Raphael and Michelangelo, and to a lesser extent on Leonardo. Art seems to develop in cycles. What happens after a moment of great innovations? Vasari, in his Lives of the Artists, seems to ask “where do we go from here?” If Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo were perfect, how does one carry on? The same thing occurred after Giotto and Duccio in the early Trecento. -

In our century there are people who write as if there were nothing but texts. These people, whom I shall call "textualists," include for example, the so-called Yale school of literary criticism centering around Harold Bloom, Geoffrey Hartmann, and Paul De Man, "post-structuralist" French thinkers like Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault, historians like Hayden White, and social scientists like Paul Rabinow. Some of these people take their point of departure from Heidegger, but usually the influence of philosophers is relatively remote. -

EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: On April 13, the Metropolitan will open for the first time sixteen permanent galleries embracing the arts of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma, and Malaysia. The new Florence and Herbert Irving Galleries for the Arts of South and Southeast Asia will include some 1300 works, most of which have not been publicly displayed at the Museum before. TITLE:Frontispiece of the codex LOCATION: New Spain (AKA Mexico) DATE: 1541-1542 Mendoza ARTIST: Viceroyalty of New Spain PERIOD/STYLE: Colonial American Art PATRON: Antonio de Mendoza MATERIAL/TECHNIQUE: Ink and color on paper FORM: The Codex Mendoza is a history of the Mexica (a.k.a. Aztec) people and the growth of their empire. The Frontispiece of the Codex Mendoza features an eagle perched on a cactus, which represents the founding of Tenochtitlan, the site of present-day Mexico City. The gods told the Mexica people that such a sighting would show them where to settle. The year was 1325 when the Mexica people went in search of the site of their future home. Led by Tenoch, who can be seen to the left of the eagle with his own cactus behind him, the Mexica ended up settling on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. FUNCTION: the Codex Mendoza contains the history of Mexica conquests over the Colhuacan and Tenoyucan, a list of tributes paid by the tribes they conquered, and details of everyday life. The document was sent via ship to Spain, where it was supposed to reach King Charles. However, French pirates captured the ship and took the Codex as booty. The Codex eventually found its way to a member of the French court, Andre Thevet, who was King Henry II’s official cosmographer. Thevet decided to write his name on the Codex in a number of different places, adding yet another layer to its history. Later, it ended up in English hands in the library at Oxford Universi- ty.
