SAN ANTONIO AREA RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION General Meeting (ZOOM) September 16, 2020

ALL ABOARD THE TRTA TRAIN

The General Meeting of the Area Retired Teachers Association was called to order via Zoom by President Dr. Norma Smith-Tyler at 1:03 P.M., on September 9, 2020. The President being in the chair and the Secretary also being present. Copies of all reports and handouts will be filed with the minutes.

Chaplain Linda Martin gave the invocation and led us in the pledges to the American and flags.

President Dr. Norma Smith-Tyler informed us that the February 19, 2020 Minutes had been approved by committee and will be filed.

The Treasurer’s Financial Report had been disseminated by email.

OFFICER’S REPORTS President Dr. Norma Smith-Tyler reported the membership that the Transition Meeting and the Installation of Officers had occurred on August 19, 2020 via Zoom. Most officers and committee chairs attended the District 20 training sessions via Zoom. Martha Ann Gutierrez and Dr. Amy Jo Baker had planned a spectacular General Meeting with Tim Lee and a variety of state legislators. Everyone should have received their yearbooks by mail. Everyone should continue to record and submit their volunteer hours to Nellie.

We will continue to meet via Zoom until further notice. We will have in-person meetings again when the COVID-19 lockdown ends. President Smith-Tyler thanked Luci Cheatwood for all she has done to make it possible for us to meet via Zoom.

President-Elect Shirley Melenyzer-Schertz informed us that she had picked up the yearbooks and taken them to the mailers on August 26. Anyone who had joined after the printing of the yearbooks should contact her directly to make arrangements to get their yearbook.

1st Vice-President Becky Alvarez read the Hispanic-American Month Proclamation from San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic Month. She thanked Martha Ann Gutierrez for arranging for getting it for us.

Corresponding Secretary Susan Saenz-Solis went over the names of members who have passed away since her report to the executive board last week. Their names have been added to the Memorial List.

COMMITTEE REPORTS Legislative Chair Dr. Amy Jo Baker thanked everyone who was participating. She informed us that Tim Lee would speak first and then the legislators or their representatives. There would be a short question and answer session after everyone spoke. She also introduced District 20 guests Irene Rodriguez-Dubberly and Brock Gregg plus Roy Varney from TRTA who were participating with us.

Memorial Chair Helen Hamm reported that she had been working with Luci Cheatwood and Dr. Stella Carreon on the Memorial Service. The Memorial information would go out in the October Newsletter.

Technology Chair Luci Cheatwood informed us that people can call or email her if they have any questions about using Zoom or getting into the SAARTA website. http://localunits.org/SanAntonio/

Guest Speakers: Immediate Past President Dr. Stella Carreon introduced Tim Lee, TRTA Executive Director.

Luci told us that she would send the membership the TRTA Legislative Priorities by Mail Chimp.

Dr. Amy Jo Baker, Legislative Chair, introduced State Senators and Representatives. President Smith-Tyler informed us that the District 20 Fall Conference would be on October 22 via Zoom. She encouraged members to attend.

There being no further business, President Norma Smith-Tyler adjourned the meeting at 2:28 P.M.
