Rare Biological Phenomenon in Dragonflies Sighted at Kole Wetlands 29 June, 2020 Rare biological phenomenon in dragonflies sighted at Kole wetlands When Renjith R.V and Vivek Chandran spotted a peculiar dragonfly, the Scarlet Skimmer (Crocothemis servilia), in the Puzhakkal area of the Kole wetlands in Thrissur last year, little did they know that they were documenting a very rare biological phenomenon. The male dragonflies typically have prominent blood red colouraton in almost all their body parts, including the head, thorax, abdomen and legs, and the female is a pale yellow in colour with a dark brown thorax and legs. But the one they spotted on July 14 as part of the Kole Odonata Survey 2019, was “part red and part yellow”. Later, while compiling data, they were thrilled to find that they had recorded gyanandromorphism — a very rare biological phenomenon. ‘Genetic aberration’ Gynandromorphs are chimeric individuals having both male and female tissues, and are viewed by the scientific community as a genetic aberration. Even though common in some arthropod taxa such as Crustacea and Arachnida, the paper says it is very rare in Odonates and only 30 individuals from seven families have been reported with the condition worldwide. The spotted individual showed bilateral gynandromorphism of only the thorax, half of which showed blood red colouraton as in males, and the other half had the pale yellow characteristc of females. The individual had a mix of male and female external characters, ranging from almost entirely female to about equally divided. Odonate: They are predaceous insects comprising the dragonflies and damselflies. Arthopod: An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and paired jointed appendages. Arthropods form the phylum Euarthropoda, which includes insects, arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans. Electrical Conductivity (Ec), Calcium +Magnesium (Ca+Mg), Sodium (Na+), Carbonates (Carb), Bicarbonates (Bc), Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR) and Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC) were studied for each water sample. Interesting results were obtained both for Anisoptera and Zygoptera species. Among dragonflies, genus Crocothemis of family Libellulidae appeared to be resistant while Genus Gomphidia and Sympetrum of families Gomphidae and Libellulidae were observed to be affected by variations in salinity gradients of waters of different sites. Knowledge and studies on the diversity of dragonflies in India is very high. Identification by traditional taxonomy often leads to misidentification. Incidence of sexual dimorphism is found to be high particularly in the Libellulidae and Aeshnidae family. In order to resolve the above mentioned problem, the accurate identification of the dragonflies was carried out by DNA barcoding using COI gene. In the present study, selected dragonfly species (Bradinopyga geminata, Crocothemis servilia, Diplacodes trivialis and Anaciaeschna jaspidea) of the family of Libellulidae and Aeshnidae were taken and along with three other evident species (Pantala flavescens, Orthetrum sabina, and Brachythemis contaminata) were retrieved from GenBank. The phylogenetic tree was created using NJ (Neighbour Joining) method to determine the origin and evolutionary relationships of the species. Similarity search was performed and conformed species were submitted to the NCBI and BOLD database for species authentication. The present study concluded that the DNA barcoding is an invaluable tool for the authentication of the species. Storage of this nucleotide information in a database like BOLD would greatly help in the identification up to sub species level.

Therefore, biology of C. servilia servilia has been studied under laboratory conditions (24 0C, 70 - 75% RH and 12 hr Photo period). It completes its life cycle within 3 months, egg stage lasts for 18 days and nymphal period is 72 days. There are 12 instars, each has about 7 – 10 days duration. During nymphal period they feed on paramoecium, daphnia, redworms and mosquito larvae. Adult survives for 4 days without food. Mated female can lay about 140 – 150 eggs in water body/water trough. The scientific species name "erythraea" also refers to the red colour (Greek "erythros" means red, see Fliedner, 1997). The range of this Orthetrum-sized libellulid covers the mediterranean (Brulle described specimens from Greece) and the whole of Africa, from there stretching eastwards via Mghanistan to India (Tsuda, 1991).
