The programme will help people take that step to feeling mentally and physically healthier through a variety of specialised support which follows NHS guidance. DR. RON HILL M.B.E. PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 82

Dr. Ron Hill M.B.E., former Olympic Marathon what he described as “the biggest challenge of runner and local Hyndburn hero, passed away my life” and is honoured in Accrington’s annual at the age of 82 on 23 May 2021. This outdoor dining experience is an important step on the road to normality for Maundy and its guests. Teresa Fitzjohn, the drop-in manager says; “Lunches with our guests are what we’ve missed the most during the past year. We’ve been distributing packed lunches daily throughout the pandemic but it’s just not the same. I’m so thrilled that our guests are able to join us for a sit down meal in the sun where they can chat with us and their friends and just chill for a while.” Lunches are served Monday – Saturday at 12 noon. Seating is in the courtyard outside 29/31 Abbey Street, Accrington, weather permitting.

Maundy Relief’s shop at 36 Abbey Street has re-opened with a new lay-out and an improved customer experience. Johnnie Walker, the shop manager said “The shop was looking a bit down at heel before the pandemic and sales were struggling. We took the opportunity while we were closed to spruce things up and improve the shopping experience for our customers. The shop team worked incredibly hard to get things right and I’m proud of all of them. We’ve had some great feedback from customers and sales are up on 2019.” Maundy Relief relies on volunteers to keep the shop running and is currently looking for drivers assistants and anyone who would like to find out more about this opportunity can contact Johnnie or Beccy on 01254 381637. Maundy Relief’s shop sells furniture, clothes and bric a brac with many unusual and collectable items on sale. All profits go back into supporting the local community. Maundy Relief welcomed back the Art Group for TO MAUNDY RELIEF: its first session since March 2020. Volunteers and participants were happy to resume the Art Group after a long break. Group leader, Keith Dawson said “We were all delighted to see each other again. It was great to have a couple of hours of chat, laughter and creativity again – we’ve all missed the company and this is a highlight of some of our weeks.” The group is very friendly and informal and no artistic skills are needed in order to participate. New participants are welcomed and quickly become part of the group which also plans trips and walks for those who are interested. Residents have risen to the plea to get tested frequently and get their jab over the past week, with hundreds of people coming forward in just a few days. In Hyndburn the rate of testing* is now 743.7 per 100,000, whilst the rate across England is 497.7 per 100,000. Cllr Miles Parkinson OBE, Leader of Hyndburn Borough Council, thanks the community for playing their part: “With every positive case of Covid-19 that we find through testing we can then work to stop further spread of the virus. I was extremely pleased to see the testing rate in our borough is so high. This has been possible due to a huge multi-agency effort from our Council Officers, Lancashire County Council, education staff, NHS services and Public Health. “Over the last week we have seen street teams handing out testing kits, schools pushing the importance of testing and our community has taken on this challenge and stepped up. Working with voluntary and community organisations to support and protect those most at risk of Covid-19 in Hyndburn. HYNDBURN After a successful bid from Hyndburn Borough Council, £492,870 has been awarded from the Ministry of Housing, COMMUNITY Communities and Local Government to deliver a specific range of initiatives a Covid-19 communications campaign and CHAMPIONS develop networks with the community for long-lasting impact...

The Enhance and extend the operation of the Hub, making it even easier for residents to access the right support for them, Hyndburn Hub in the right place, at the right time.

Communications Develop localised campaigns, voiced by the community to amplify crucial messaging such as vaccination or public and information health information.

Investment £132,750 has been allocated for Hyndburn voluntary and community organisations to bid for supporting projects which scheme will target those disproportionately affected by Covid-19.

Wellbeing Provide 1,000 residents with free access to a 12-week physical activity and nutrition programme, following NHS guidance, programme for those who have been impacted by Covid-19.

Volunteering and Support more residents to gain high-quality volunteering experiences, learn new skills, connect with others and give outreach events back to the local community.

Expand the Community Action Network, inviting more Networks and local people to become Community Champions. Invest in learning and development events for the network to grow HYNDBURN expansion COMMUNITY knowledge and expertise. CHAMPIONS

Host a Volunteer celebration event to recognise and thank the hundreds of people across Hyndburn who have made a Celebrate real difference to the lives of people within our community throughout the pandemic.
