American Film Institute's Top American Film Institute’s Top 100 Student taught course, spring 2010 Student instructor: Christian Griset (senior, Physics) Sponsoring Professor: Robert Rosenstone Course description: In this course we will study nine films on the American Film Institute’s list, “100 Movies, 100 Years”, ranging from Modern Times to Pulp Fiction. The course will introduce students to the elements of film making and storytelling which solidified these films in cinematic history (e.g. Orson Welles’ innovative techniques to manipulate camera angles in Citizen Kane; camera induced tension in 12 Angry Men; the driving dialogue in Pulp Fiction). Each week will be structured as to watch a film followed by a class discussion lead by the instructor. The films are chosen from my judgment of what students will find most interesting and on the ease of being able to appreciate technical aspects of each film. Tentative film schedule by week: 1. 12 Angry Men 2. Raging Bull 3. Modern Times 4. Apocalypse Now 5. Citizen Kane 6. Do the Right Thing 7. Duck Soup 8. The Unforgiven 9. Pulp Fiction 10. Class discussion of Pulp Fiction Grading: Grading will be broken up into three equal parts among in-class/homework assignments, class participation, and a final essay. A passing grade is 67%. Homework and assignments: Before watching each film, I will hand out a list of questions the students can choose to answer either during the movie or as homework. The questions will be designed to prepare the student for the discussion following the film, for which I will have a list of prepared topics on important aspects which helped define its role in cinema. The participation grade will be based on quantity. The idea is to get people thinking and express their own point of view, since film impacts everyone differently. The final essay will be a two page minimum (more is welcome) analysis of Pulp Fiction, as I believe students will find it relatively easy to analyze from a technical perspective. The paper can be on anything the student wants, from character development to plot devices to recurring themes. The paper will be due on the last class, which will be spent discussing this film. .

Bibek Debroy∗ Culture is difficult to define. This is more so in a large and heterogeneous country like India, where there is no common language and religion. There are sub-cultures within the country. Joseph Nye’s ‘soft power’ expression draws on a country’s cross-border cultural influences and is one enunciated with the American context in mind. Almost tautologically, soft power implies the existence of a relatively large country and the term is, therefore, now also being used for China and India. In the Indian case, most instances of practice of soft power are linked to language and literature (including Indians writing in English), music, dance, cuisine, fashion, entertainment and even sport, and there is no denying that this kind of cross-border influence has been increasing over time, with some trigger provided by the diaspora. The film and television industry’s influence is no less important. In the last few years, India has produced the largest number of feature films in the world, with 1,164 films produced in 2007. The United States came second with 453, Japan third with 407 and China fourth with 402. Ticket sales are higher for Bollywood than for Hollywood, though revenue figures are much higher for the latter. Indian film production is usually equated with Hindi-language Bollywood, often described as the largest film-producing centre in the world.

    CONSTITUTING BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN(S): RHETORICAL STRATEGY IN THE LGBT MOVEMENT by JON B. HOFFMAN (Under the Direction of Christine Harold) ABSTRACT This project contributes to the study of modern social movements by analyzing two strands of rhetoric around the movie Brokeback Mountain and their implications for the LGBT movement. I identify the key distinction as one of rhetorical strategy as opposed to an ethical orientation for which Michael Warner has argued. Through close textual analysis, I outline the limits and possibilities of both assimilationist and integrationist rhetoric as strategic options for LGBT advocacy. I argue that rather than privileging one over the other, a more effective political discourse must be self-conscious of the strategic value of any given rhetoric.     White Supremacist Prison Gangs in the United States A Preliminary Inventory Introduction With rising numbers and an increasing geographical spread, for some years white supremacist prison gangs have constitut- ed the fastest-growing segment of the white supremacist movement in the United States. While some other segments, such as neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan, have suffered stagnation or even decline, white supremacist prison gangs have steadily been growing in numbers and reach, accompanied by a related rise in crime and violence. What is more, though they are called “prison gangs,” gangs like the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, Aryan Circle, European Kindred and others, are just as active on the streets of America as they are behind bars. They plague not simply other inmates, but also local communities across the United States, from California to New Hampshire, Washington to Florida. For example, between 2000 and 2015, one single white supremacist prison gang, the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, was responsible for at least 33 murders in communities across Texas. Behind these killings were a variety of motivations, including traditional criminal motives, gang-related murders, internal killings of suspected informants or rules-breakers, and hate-related motives directed against minorities. These murders didn’t take place behind bars—they occurred in the streets, homes and businesses of cities and towns across the Lone Star State. When people hear the term “prison gang,” they often assume that such gang members plague only other prisoners, or perhaps also corrections personnel. They certainly do represent a threat to inmates, many of whom have fallen prey to their violent attacks.

    Black Cowboys: Ned Logan and the Portrayal of Blackness in Unforgiven The Oscars, film critics, and viewers alike have witnessed and praised the plot and performance of Unforgiven for many reasons. Will Munny still stands as the first image that comes to mind when thinking about Unforgiven - either his concerned face, him riding his horse, falling into mud, or infamously killing the town sheriff, Little Bill. Will Munny stands as the face of Unforgiven, similar to how Clint Eastwood stands as the mind behind the film. However, after further watching, re-watching, and engaging in a close viewing of the film, especially as a Black viewer, Ned Logan becomes the most important and different character in the film to me. Analysis into the film (while having my personal Black experience as context) reveals both a dichotomy and a purpose that Ned, and only Ned, has as the only Black figure in the film. I believe these distinct characterizations of Ned relate to his Blackness and the lack of diversity on and off screen. With the context of film history, Black cowboys in the nineteenth century, and through my eyes as a Black film viewer, I center Ned and try to understand how his character speaks to issues in film-making as it pertains to Black stories. Ned’s dynamic in this film interests me because he becomes both hyper-visible and invisible as a character. Almost everything he does and says centers Will, making him a classic sidekick. At the same time, Ned’s guidance to Will, and even his death, single-handedly shape Will’s decisions and character development in the movie.

WILSON Indiana State University ABSTRACT: Historically, a dominant proportion of academic studies of social science issues in theatrically released films have focused on issues surrounding crime and the criminal justice system. Additionally, a dominant proportion has utilized non-probability sampling methods in identifying the films to be analyzed. Arguably one of the primary reasons film studies of social science issues have used non-probability samples may be that no one has established definitive operational definitions of populations of films, let alone develop datasets from which researchers can draw. In this article a new methodology for establishing film populations for both qualitative and quantitative research–the Unified Film Population Identification Methodology–is both described and demonstrated. This methodology was created and is presented here in hopes of expand the types of film studies utilized in the examination of social science issues to those communication theories that require the examination of large blocks of media. Further, it is anticipated that this methodology will help unify film studies of social science issues in the future and, as a result, increase the reliability, validity, and replicability of the said studies. Cinema and the Culture of Violence American cinema has increasingly provided a site of convergence for depicting both the inner city "reality" of black-on-black youth violence and for promoting a renewed "acceptability and/or tolerance of straightforward racist doctrine." Recent films focusing on black urban violence such as Boys N the Hood(1991), Juice (1992), Menace II Society(1993), Sugar Hill(1994), and Fresh(1994) have attracted national media coverage because they do not simply represent contemporary urban realities but also reinforce the popular perception that everyday black urban life and violent crime mutually define each other. Cinema appears to be providing a new language and aesthetic in which the city becomes the central site for social disorder and violence, and black youth in particular, become agents of crime, pathology, and moral decay. Real life and celluloid images blur as the representations of race and violence proliferate more broadly through the news media's extensive coverage of youth violence, not infrequently highlighting the gore, guts, hysteria, and other tawdry Hollywood effects to punctuate its sensationalist often racist commentary. The relationship between the everyday and cinematic representations is often taken up as causal, as when the national media recently focused on Hispanic youth in Los Angeles, New York, and New Jersey who rioted or fought each other outside of the movie theaters in which black youth gangsta films were being shown. In examining these real and symbolic representations of black on black violence, the popular press used the incident to link exposure to media violence with aggressive, anti social behavior in real life.
